View Full Version : Avatar Contest for December 8-15
Paradox

There's no such thing as an original thought, so this week the topic is...
Knock-offs!
Be it a product, a concept, a character, a literary theme...anything where someone got there second (or later).
I'll be taking the infamous original (hee!) Wonder Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Man_%28Fox_Publications%29), who lasted one issue before DC sued Fox for copyright infringement and Fox Comics had to bail on it.
Standard rules: Must use avatar for the length of the contest. You may reserve "dibs" a concept. Don't make suggestions as the competitors than think that suggestion "dead". Voting is on Tuesday.

Dibs on the derivative one-off replacements for the Daleks: the Quarks, and their handlers the Dominators.

I had wanted to use Steven Spielberg, but all I could find was his non-Union Mexican equivalent, Senor Spielbergo.

Initially I was going to use a more well known character Liefeld had a hand in due to the talk in Rita's, but then I remembered his 90's version Fighting American.

Such a blatant knock off of Captain America that Marvel actually sued his ass. In the end the case was settled and comics were produced with a clause that Fighting American could have a shield but couldn't throw it like Cap does. Bizarre.

With the 12 Days of Classic Comics Christmas event starting on the 14th (I change my avatar every day to reflect my entry), I'll be sitting out the avatar contest til after the 25th. Have fun, guys!

I summon the previous commitment!

In with the knock-off for whom being such was the entire point of the character (albiet not at first): Supreme.

This guy started out as a Captain Marvel knockoff (so basically, a knockoff of a knockoff), but in the fertile imagination of one Alan Moore, Esq., became so much more.
Marvelman (later known as Miracleman, more recently known as "is this goddamn story ever going to get finished?!?!")

Sagafan picks an old fave:

Not only was it a knock-off, he used actual pages that were scheduled for Capt. America, but he got fired before he used. Fighting American ended up fighting "commies" who wore swastikas on their arms! What a dunce!

I am in with The Sentry. Say what you will I think he's a straight up Superman knock off, with a Marvel bipolar Disorder.

Mac Danny dares me:
I am in with The Sentry. Say what you will...
OK. I think he's more a steal of Triumph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_%28comics%29) than Superman.

In with the Wolveroach from Cerebus. One of Dave Sim's many iterations of the Cockroach character who was used to mock Marvel's popular supes.

Nah, if anything, he's more of a blatant swipe at Marvelman. But then, Triumph was swiping fairly liberally from Moore as well. Which was in itself a blatant Captain Marvel swipe. Whom the courts said was swiping from Superman. Who was pretty much ripped off of Gladiator. And so on and so forth.

Those of you who are now writing angry, profanity-laden posts in response to the above, please note that Stonegold was referring to Philip Wylie's pulp novel Gladiator, and not the guy from the Shi'ar Imperial Guard.
And I liked the Sentry.

Necessary early voting again.
I'm going with Mac Danny's Sentry, because we can't even be sure who he's a knock-off of!

Early voting? The votes are still kept away and not counted until Election Day, right?
I gotta vote for Mac Danny, thanks to the strip that Torgo posted.

The above thing wasn't about good and bad, just that there were a lot of blatant swipes involved.
