Now this'll be interesting. Will you wait until after Petersen and my monkey fight?
Thanks for the kind words everybody. New stuff soon I promise.
They'll be plenty after Petersen and I do the LoJo mini series. Oh, and Otto.

Otto, will do.
Ruta, Petersen got there first, and we were already working out an art trade, sorry.
But, being as you bid on my auction piece you do get the print pack that I sent Otto, so drop me a PM and I'll post one off.

I like the Batman a lot, especially the treatment of shadow. The only negative to me is the black air brushing on the face. It muddies the color.

I know this is only a head shot but he's wearing purple shorts, right?

fitzroy
06-04-2004, 08:30 AM
Purple, tattered, super stretchy shorts.
As for the face, I've never really found a good way to create flesh shadows.
Little help?

Otto, modest? Yes.

Athena

I'm probably not the one to help since a) I'm not a painter and b) Otto doesn't like my coloring but here's something that you should experiment with.

I redid your Batman with two colors, not that I'd paint it this way, just to show two different effects. In Photoshop, set your brush on "multiply" instead of "normal" and the opacity around 10%. Multiply can also give you a water color effect but I airbrushed to match your original.

This would've been a perfect time to use by new waacom tablet that I got for my birthday but it's home and I'm not. Had to paint with a bar of soap. No telling how your monitor will show this but the point is to experiment with this technique using darker or different colors.

Tad
06-04-2004, 09:23 AM
I probably should've waited til I could use the waacom, :( but it gives you a rough idea.

That's great, I will put it into practice next time.
And what does Otto know anyway? pff!

Aaaargh!!!!! No no no!

I wasn't being snarky, honest! I meant that you would cry because England is a pile of pants (even though we have castles and stuff) and it would be a shame that you jedi powers are useless, not "shame" in a "whatever" way.

Did you know you spelt wimen wrong? It has two m's, like this- "wimmen"

Anakin
06-05-2004, 12:57 PM
No, I think Jedi powers would ahve to work better in England.

Point 1. How many people across the pond put "Jedi Knight" down as thier religon?

Point 2. England has Henges everywhere! There's lots of Force enegry to draw from!

fitzroy
06-05-2004, 01:10 PM
Good points, well made.

Athena
06-05-2004, 01:41 PM
ok peeps, it's like this:
Jedi Powers do not work better in England.
1. Not many people on our little Island put Jedi Knight down as their religion, although some did. (I'm presuming you refer to the article written some time ago about the census we had where people did actually put Jedi Knight down as their religion, because they thought it was funny. It wasn't.)
2. The reason why Jedi Powers do not work in England is not just because I say so- although it should be. The Henges are to do with ley lines, barefoot druids, fertility and earthly gifts such as bountiful crops, whereas conversely, (and do correct me if I'm wrong) Jedi Powers are all about stars, spaceships and relationships that are so very, very wrong.

Although I suppose Jedi Knights resemble druids with the robes and the hair and stuff. And the sandals.

Am I about to get a pasting?
Kisses...... XXX

Athena
06-05-2004, 01:42 PM
Does Otto wear sandals?

Not with socks, I hope.

Anakin
06-05-2004, 02:45 PM
Sorry, Athena, I was trying to be funny. Lucas was trying to merge the basic ideas of every religon when he created the Jedi, so I figgured all the Henges might make England a more Jedi-friendly place.

Thinking back over star Wars movies...yeah, the Jedi do tend to have messed-up relationships, don't they? Maby it's a just Skywalker thing.

Athena
06-05-2004, 03:32 PM
Please don't say sorry. Now I feel bad. I was joking too, but apparently to convey this I must use the magic of the "smilies" ;) or otherwise people will think I'm being horrible and not talk to me any more :(

Sorry Anakin, for making you say sorry.

Only at sandy beaches. Rest of the time its boots or sneaks. 'Course

Nice biker dude, but careful with the "Stars and Bars"
Please listen to Otto carefully here (Now I know Hell is freezing). In all seriousness I take extreme offense at the use of the "Rebel" flag. It is a symbol of racism used to intimidate. Anyone who says it is merely a symbol of "Southern pride" or "rebel spirit" is either ignorant of its history or is intentionally trying to change its image to help spread its use.

That flag = Hate. Nothing else. Nice art, though.

2)Dukes of Hazard: Can't touch the General Lee

fitzroy
06-06-2004, 10:52 PM
Ok, need to think carefully before I answer this one.

It's just a cartoon.

I'm British

The biker is white (redneck), does that make the picture racist for not being culturally diverse?

And as a side-bar (not in a pride way), it's the most 'hit' cartoon on the freeantz site.

If you want I can give a pretentious explaination about the 'meaning' of the pic. The biker is ashamed of the assumed relationship between his lifestyle and the 'flag' or the history of what the flag stands for. And is celebrating the riding away from any association.

Or it's just a cartoon

JohnThompson
06-07-2004, 01:02 AM
Nobody said you were a racist or should do racially diverse art. I assume you are (being British) unaware of the emotions touched off by the depiction of that particular flag and just wanted you to be aware that there can be negative repercussions when depicting it.

No need to defend yourself or your reason for creating the image.

Athena
06-07-2004, 01:14 AM
Do I dare?

Well peeps, everyone is offended by something for some reason or another, and that's fine, it's our right to have our own opinions as responsible members of society and human beings.
For you guys, its the flag. That's fine. I am almost completely ignorant to it's meaning ( in Britian, nothing existed before the second world war, according to my history lessons, anyway). Don't get me wrong, I have a vague idea, but not enough of an idea to be qualified to comment upon it's meaning.
However, for those who are offended, I am sure the artist did not intend this.

My own personal views are in no way affiliated with those of Fitzcorp.
Even though I'm married to him.

fitzroy
06-07-2004, 01:43 AM
Like many symbols, the flag or it's image has been hijacked by certain groups and as such is immediately recognised as a negative image. As I understand it, the flag in question was originally the confederate navy's battle flag.
Lets face it, most flags, especially those of major powers can be considered negative after some of the atrociities carried out in their name or under their standard. These atrocities committed under National Security or in the creating of an Empire are conveniently forgotten when someone wants to feel Patriotic.
This isn't an attack on any of the posts, just my opinion.

So, sorry for any offence. It's just a cartoon.

As an afterthought, nobody on this board seems to have a problem with the swastika on the Hellboy pic.

exactly. Rednecks still use that symbol just as nazis used the swastica. I think someone (and I'm too lazy to scroll back and see who) just wanted you to be careful if you use it in the future.

It's a great cartoon The character seems pretty into Lenerd Skynerd to care about the history of the flag, he sees it as beeing a rebel.

More art Fitz! I wanna see Hellboy knocking the helmet off a ghost knight (or is that too scooby doo?

It was Mr. JohnThompson who was offended, and otto who said be careful. There is a whole argument behind it, which would make for a pretty tasty debate, but if it's going to carry on, maybe someone should start a new thread.

Scooby Doo is too convoluted in plot for my tastes and you can never guess the villain before the end reveal.

It was Mr. JohnThompson who was offended, and otto who said be careful. There is a whole argument behind it, which would make for a pretty tasty debate, but if it's going to carry on, maybe someone should start a new thread.

By the way, Lord Fitz loves Scooby Doo... :-))
I should clarify: I am offended by the use of the "Southern Cross" flag by people in the U.S. I was not offended that Fitzroy used it, I only wanted to let him know that there will be some pretty strong reactions associated with its depiction. I spent most of last year trying to get the city I live in stop flying that flag in a city park, and I heard all the debate back and forth. I'm not going to get back into that here.
So, sorry for any offence. It's just a cartoon.

As an afterthought, nobody on this board seems to have a problem with the swastika on the Hellboy pic.
I was disturbed by the chibi Hitler art posted in Conundrum's art thread. Making these negative symbols more palatable by turning them into cartoons or "good ol' boy" TV show cars ignores the acts committed under these banners. Just a few years ago the Joe Camel ads were banned here for their potential appeal to children because guess what? Cartoons appeal to kids. While I don't think those ads should have been banned, if a cartoon ad campaign were selling intolerance and hate I would support a ban.

Again, I'm not saying that I think you are racist for using a southern flag in a piece of art. In the end, you created a picture that produces strong reactions in viewers, and I had a strong reaction. Isn't that what good art is supposed to do?

Nothing but love for your art Here from now on, OK?:D

Hey John

You make some good points, and I respect you for voicing your opinions.

The 'Union (Jack) Flag' and The Stars and Stripes are tainted by so much racial hatred and oppression of minorities in both countries history that it seems laughable that The Stars and Bars is singled out for the same reasons. The States and the UK built their world standing on crushing other nations and peoples for God's sake.
Yes it is now affiliated with right wing groups but it hasn't always been the case. It has also been associated with freedom from the system. And that's how it was used in my cartoon.

I'm pleased you like my art, and also that we can discuss it.
Cheers

All great ideas, Sir D. But that sounds like 16-24 pages and I'm working
on a quick 6-8 pages. Nice colour job BTW.

Fitz? Nicely done, but, had the teeth been gritted, it would have shown

No, Over the Top was that arm wrestling movie.

It combines all the drama of a child custody case with..ARM WRESTLING

kramer vs kramer was a child custody movie..but is was missing something......oh yeah, ARM WRESTLING!

Nope, they're firmly snuggled under that bra-thingy. Pants-hams are nicely exposed, though.

Why do I suddenly feel like everybody hates me and totally devalues my opnion because I don't know who somebody is? I don't go into histerics whenever somebody tells me they haven't read 1984 or treat someone like a unintelligable retard when they tell me they don't know what an Atari is. I'm not a big mistery novel person. So sue me. I've never gotten into things like that. That doesn't make me an unintelligent person. If it will redeem me at all I was in 10 Little Indians when our theater produced it. God, I never meant to offend anybody by saying that I don't know who the hell Miss Marple is. You'd think I had just killed the Pope.

Maija
06-14-2004, 06:36 PM
Kory! I would not hate you and devalue your opinion because you don't know who Miss Marple is! I just thought it was funny that something was such a cultural fixture as to be pretty much a cliche not that long ago (there was a slew of Miss Marple and Poirot made-for-TV movies in the eighties, for some reason) but long enough ago that you're unfamiliar with it, and so I'm laughing at my own datedness a little. I am by no means offended that you don't know. I was composing my post as ICBM was posting his, so it seemed like you got both barrels.

I couldn't think of you as an unintelligent person. You're one of the wittiest people on the forum!

Har! I laughed out loud and frightened my roomate.

:P Sorry for getting sore about it, I'm a little touchy on some subjects, and that one hit a nerve. It's mainly caused by people getting all crazy and saying things like, "You've never seen <insert random movie title here>!?!?! What's wrong with you! I won't value any of your opinions from now on because you've never seen <insert random movie title here>." They wouldn't even listen to me when I tried to tell them '2001: A Space Odessey' was one of my favorite movies as a kid or that I knew what a Morlock was besides being referenced in the X-men. I know a lot of random things, but Agatha Christie-related material? 'Fraid not. I do know who Poirot, is, though. Seen the show a couple of times.

WoT? Are you referring to Wheel of Time? I have Eye of the World sitting on my table at the moment, but I still haven't opened it. I hadn't even heard of it until my boyfriend told me about it last year. I have to read Eye of the World because whenever he and his friend get together it's nearly impossible to figure out what they're talking about.

Maija
06-14-2004, 10:20 PM
WoT? Are you referring to Wheel of Time?

Oh, THAT'S what that is. I thought it was Wagon of Tapioca by Louis L'Amour.

If you haven't heard of Wagon of Tapioca then I have no respect for you or any of your opinions. It's a sprawling tale of the Old West about one man's epic journey to deliver pudding to a party of frontier settlers trapped in a high mountain pass.

You should read it sometime or else I'll hate you.

(Poor, poor Fitzroy's art thread. Derailed once again. This is the big hint that you'd better post some more lunchtime non-smoking sketches!)

fitzroy
06-14-2004, 10:57 PM
Don't mind me, I had a good night's sleep while all this was going on.

Miss Marple, for those in the dark about such things, was a character based on a very famous lady in our country's past.
Her first name, unusually was in fact 'Miss', this caused much hilarity during her school days and led to 'Miss' killing one of her fellow pupils with a cricket bat aged 9 (miss Marple was 9, the bat was only 3).
On the run, and living on a diet of bread and diced butterfly cakes, 'Miss' fell out of society until joining the war effort in 1938 as a Spitfire pilot.
'Miss' was shot down over New Zealand during a pretty sticky dog-fight with a fleet of Irish Terriers. Crash landing with only a flashlight and two pieces of cotton wool for survival. Living off the land until the end of the war, she met and fell in love with a sheep called Andrew. They married and had 8 children, all of them were delicious.
It was in New Zealand that her sleuthing skills would be developed during the now infamous 'case of the wet bra strap'.
The rest I'm sure you all know...

Good morning

Well, I've settled on a style for the LoJo story (if Otto ever stops having breaks and gets some writing done). So here's todays lunchtime sketch. A few wrinkles but I'm happy on the 'look' of the character.

that you wanted it "Moore" style which was panel
descriptions and word balloons. 'Course you artist types

descriptions as a guide. The panel grid layout is important
to the story telling, but you'll understand better once you've
