Maybe I'm just feeling Nostalgic, but all of I sudden, I felt like going to Youtube and watching all of the Ultraforce Cartoons....my favorite being the one with the Night Man. I actually miss a lot of the characters from the Malibu Universe, like Rune for example. I wish there was a way to incorporate them into the Marvel Universe, like DC did with Milestone, (Static, Icon, etc).
Anyone feel the same way?
P.S., even though I know it was corny, I LOVED the live action Night Man show lol
I do wish they could have incorporated the Ultarverse more into the MU after it ended. But I imagine there are all sorts of legal issues and financial issues which will probably end up making it more of a hassel than it's worth.
Funny thing is, I think the original Nightman should be walking around in the MU somewhere as we speak.

I liked the Warren Ellis and Ian Edgington issues of Ultraforce. First time Ellis worked with Darick Robertson, so in a way, that's the genesis of Transmetropolitan.

Yeah definitely...I would absolutely love it if Nightman was runing around in the 616...I'd love to see him get into it with Moon Knight lol
Do any of you have any info about what the actual legal issues would be with bringing these characters into the MU?

I would love to see the Ultraverse characters brought into the MU... especially The Exiles. I loved the Mutant/Ultra team that was thrown together due to circumstances...

Only because I used to work on the book when I was a teenager.

I like them okay, though I'm amazed how Marvel is just sitting on the properties.

They can't use them. Read Brevoort's Formspring, he can't even comment on why they can't use them, beyond saying that he's not allowed to comment on why they can't use them.

Smells like BS to me. The moment Marvel got the Ultra-verse, they ran it into the ground.

Believe me, I was there, it was already run into the ground. Marvel buying the company gave it a bit more life, but the stuff that came out just prior to the purchase was pretty terrible. And then once you did have the purchase, you had Ellis and Grant and then Ellis and Robertson pre-Transmet on Ultraforce. Until they laid us all off.
I miss the Ultraverse too. It's weird we have revivals of the Gold Key books at Dark Horse & Atlas Comics coming back but I think we will never see any Ultraverse (or Valiant books like XO Manowar) books ever again....

Those guys were on the series?
Damn, I read the last 10 issues and certainly didn't recognize it as their usual quality.

I liked Rune but without BWS Rune was crappy. The UltraForce was nice even when Marvel took over. I do miss that title. The one I miss the most though is the Protector from Malibu's Genesis imprint. The series started off great but it went down at the end. Marvel should still own the properties for the Protectors without any legal hassle (since they are public domain I think). I wish they would bring them back but incorporate them into the MU.

I think they retconned this out. Black September was the UV and the 616 together but later on they said it was not the 616 but an alternate Marvel U.

This is what Quesada said on the subjetc back in June 2005:
"Let's just say that I wanted to bring these characters back in a very big way, but the way that the deal was initially structured, it's next to impossible to go back and publish these books.
There are rumors out there that it has to do with a certain percentage of sales that has to be doled out to the creative teams. While this is a logistical nightmare because of the way the initial deal was structured, it's not the reason why we have chosen not to go near these characters, there is a bigger one, but I really don't feel like it’s my place to make that dirty laundry public"
Only because I used to work on the book when I was a teenager.
No kidding? What did you do?

How was Shuriken as a character?

Miss it, No? Not really. It was a good book and good comic universe. Shame it all sits idle. But, no I haven't really thought about it.

I miss a lot of the Ultraverse like Prime and Firearm.

I'd bet good money on the fact that the rights with the characters maybe screwed up . That the rights are so screwed up (picture MiracleMan now) with creators saying they own Firearm and not Malibu and Marvel is sued....
Plus Marvel never made the purchase for the characters. They wanted the coloring studio.

I was the one paid editorial intern from the period immediately after Marvel bought them to when we all got laid off.

I'd like to see the Avengers go into this Universe for an adventure. I didn't like any of these guys because they looked like no-name talentless rip-offs. I think I have Rune #1 because I thought it looked cool. I remember the Rune vs Venom mini and it was stupid.

The Avengers and X-Men did cross over into the Ultraverse... and honestly I think whenever the marvel characters did that they sort of outshined the locals a bit.

.
I'm not 100% certain on this, but I believe that James Robinson, Howard Chaykin, and Cully Hamner do own the Alex Swan character from Firearm. That's why he never appeared in a Marvel comic, and they instead came up with that awful Codename: Firearm mini. What they don't own is the framework of the series, i.e. all that references to the rest of the Ultraverse, etc.
Maybe StoneGold knows the scoop on this?

Even if I did know, it was from 15 years ago. It would literally be easier for me to ask Howard Chaykin than for me to remember. And really, I missed my chance to ask him that when I was hanging with him on Halloween. Which sounds name droppier than it was meant to.

Not really. That may the coolest thing I've heard all weekend. I love Chaykin's work.

As stated before I wish the would bring back Firearm. i loved the character and concept and think he would fit right into to the MU. Also I didn't remember Chaykin had anything to do with making Firearm. At least i like that because i really can't stand his art.

Chaykin designed the character and was the cover artist for most of Firearm's run. Cully Hamner was the regular artist on the series.

Thanks. I can't believe I didn't remember that.

Shuriken was very cool, as were most of the characters in the All New Exiles series, which was a very fun read. Of all the characters i would like to see back, Shuriken, Strike, and Cayman from Exiles tops the list. They could bring back Reaper and Fatale and Abyss and put them back together for a new Exiles series and I would be a happy man.
Rune was a very cool character also, and considering Marvel's pop obsession with vampires, he could come in and lay the smack down on Dracula.
