View Full Version : Post-Ultimatum Reading Order
11-30-2010, 06:11 PM
I just received my lot that i purchased on eBay of the entire line of Ultimate titles post Ultimatum, but I have no idea what order to read them in.
Ultimate Avengers Vol 1-3
Ultimate Spider-Man 1-15 and 150
New Ultimates 1-4
Ultimate Armor Wars
Anyone know what order these go in?

This is how I have them:
Ultimate Armor wars goes first followed by Ultimate X, Ultimate Enemy trilogy, Ultimate Avengers happened three weeks after Ultimatum, Ultimate Spiderman, New Ultimates is eight months after Ultimatum.
I do not know about Thor because I haven't read it yet.
I hope this helps

I can give a rough idea, but it's not exact. Other than the first page of each new book, there's no clue as to what takes place when. Here's what we do know:
Right after Ultimatum: Armor Wars
3 weeks after Ultimatum: Avengers 1
"A few months" after Ultimatum: Ultimate X (from issue #2)
6 Months after Ultimatum: Ultimate Spider-man
8 Months after Ultimatum: New Ultimates
Additionally, we know that Ultimate Mystery #1 takes place after Ultimatum because of specific character appearances (I'm going to try to leave spoilers out of this).
I like to reread books in a manner similar to this post (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showpost.php?p=7760313&postcount=5), in order to switch between books when possible; I also store all my Ultimate books in that order, and I've put my new ones in my own order. Here's what I've come up with:
Ultimate Armor Wars
Ultimate Avengers 1
Ultimate Spider-man 1-6
Ultimate Avengers 2
Ultimate Spider-man 7-8
Ultimate Spider-man 9-15
Ultimate Avengers 3
Ultimate Spider-man 150(+)
(Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates)
I think that works pretty well. Everything in parenthesis hasn't come out yet, so it's hard to know where it goes, but that's my assumption. Since the final Millar Avengers arc is Avengers vs. New Ultimates, I'm assuming it takes place after New Ultimates. I kind of like how Avengers is spaced out, making it seem like they're only called up when needed, rather than a constant team. It will depend a lot on how Ultimate Doom ends, but the whole trilogy may need to be put together, probably in the spot where Ultimate Doom is right now, or at the end there, because it's supposedly going to shake up the status quo. Finally, Ultimate X is just arbitrarily thrown in there right now, because there's little indication of when it takes place, and I just thought it worked there to break up the Spidey reading.
Now, Ultimate Thor is a different beast. It's three stories happen in "Ages ago," 1945, and "Present." The present in that book takes place before Ultimates 1, so it's not really post-Ultimatum at all. BUT, I wouldn't recommend reading it before Ultimates 1 or 2, because then you spoil one of Thor's big plot lines. Also, Hickman could even end it by showing Thor post-Ultimatum, so we'll just have to see. For now, I would keep it after New Ultimates, because I think Hickman is drawing on that plot for his story.
Hope that helps! Congrats on your eBay purchase - I hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think of them.
PS - 1000 posts!!!

Yeah, release order is always one way to do it. Makes you feel like you were reading it at the time. But a lot of times it ends up not being the best rereading order. To each his own, obviously, but I always think it's nice to read a whole arc on one book uninterrupted.

really cool, virgil, thanks!
I've been doing some research for putting together a rough trade reading order (though of course not everything is collected yet so it's not a huuuge priority)
I'll probably use this as a general guideline, though I'm sure I'll have to adjust a bit since stuff just isn't collected in trades the same way, obviously.

No problem. This is literally the order that they were released in the stores, although it looks like it differs in order of actual story. (i.e. USM 1-3 shows a already restored NYC, where as Armor Wars still has NYC in ruins even though it was released after USM. Either way though if anyone out there is a nut like me and needs to read things in original release order then this works.

it helps a lot just to have it all in one place. :D
