View Full Version : Nemesis #4 and how crushed you'd be if Nemesis' cover was "Howard Anderson" all along

First off...

I don't know about you, but overall, Nemesis has been one of the funnest rides I've ever been on in a LONG time. Issues 2 and 3 were perfect at doing their job: Which is to keep you wondering what the HELL is gonna happen next!?

But for some reason any serious "big" project that involves Millar, it ceremonially gets delayed to oblivion.

The comic debuted in March, right?

So how does it take 9+ months to pencil 4 comics? What the hell is going on.... EVERY.SINGLE.TIME?

Ultimates, Civil War, Nemesis, Kick-Ass... etc..

I digress. This thread is for us fans to talk about how much we liked it and to welcome issue 4, coming in a couple of weeks. When I go back and re-read issues 1-3 it makes my mouth water for more. It's fun. It's crazy. It's comics, and I can't wait to see this crazy $#!t on the big screen.

1. I personally loved how "Jackie Shoes" turned out to be what Morrow meant when he said "Call Kirby, we need to get a plan together." back in issue 1.

2. The "Anderson" truck outside the robbery in issue 1.

3. When Nemesis is arrested, "Howard Anderson" sent his congratulations via video remotely because he was "on business". This could have easily been pre-recorded.

4. At the end of issue 4 Sergeant Lee says "I can't BELIEVE who he's been hiding as all this time." and Morrow replies "Actually, he was my first guess all along." In the beginning of issue 2 "Howard Anderson" is the first person Morrow talks to.

I'm pretty sure Matthew Anderson murdered his own uncle and hid as him in plain sight, ala Bruce Wayne and Batman

I have a question as to Nemesis' team though. Which is which? Is Johnny the tech expert or Gentle Joe?

In issue 1, the tech man with the sash and long gloves always accompanying Gas-Pipe (Nemesis' "favorites") is addressed by Nemesis as "Gentle Joe" when he asks "I hope we get 10 million a piece". Then Nemesis states how they each have their expertise from technology crime ("Gentle Joe's" field) to burglary ("Jackie Shoes").

But in issue 3 when Nemesis breaks out of prison he states "Lights, please, Johnny" which then cuts to his tech expert in the prison guard's electronics room cutting the lights. Then his identity thief proceeds to shoot the armed guards, while Nemesis states "Lights, again, please, Johnny."

It's presumed that this "Johnny" was the one who disabled the lights when Nemesis says directly to his undercover agent "Nice work, Gentle Joe. Now get those keys and get me out of here."

So did these guys switch names or something? Is Johnny the tech expert and Gentle Joe the identity thief?

And in issue 2 when Nemesis asks the whereabouts of Morrow's family, Gas-Pipe tells him "Not even Johnny could find them." I find it more logical to use a tech expert than an identity thief to find out where someone's hidden, no?

Does anybody know if this series is expected to continue after #4 with a vol. 2 by any chance?

Yes, Millar has stated that a vol. 2 is planned. Which kind of kills some of the suspense for the 4th issue, since that means that, somehow, Nemesis will his next encounter with Morrow.

One hint someone brought up elsewhere, back when the first issue came out, was that Nemesis' card to Morrow said "Flatline still counts," which could me that his plan is to "kill" Blake Morrow, make his heart stop beating so that he is legally dead, and then revive, just so he can fight him again later, which could be what the sequel will be about.

I have not been as blown away with Nemesis as I'd hoped. It is an interesting concept (though not as original as Millar claims, since the "anti-Batman" has been done several times before), but the execution has been flat in several areas. I would have dropped it after #2, but since it was only a 4-issue series I figured I'd stick with it to the end.

What if this guy was more like The Punisher?

We see how this guy revels in crime and torturing the innocent, but The Punisher is more straightforward, 'bang! you're dead'.

There should be a sadistic high-tech superhero gone rogue who tortures the criminal underground - not just "kill em 1 by 1" but more like, playing mind games like Nemesis does.

I'm actually new to Nemesis - I hadn't caught it early enough and figured I'd trade wait but then I decided I wanted to jump on board so picked up the first three issues on eBay.

First, I had heard a LOT of haters talking crap about this series, but I really like Millar so gave it a shot. I'm guessing I had the benefit of having my expectations tempered by all the negative talk but I am REALLY enjoying this series. It's delivering exactly what it's billed as - the psychosis and evil of the Joker with the skills and resources of Batman.

And yeah I will be shocked if Nemesis has not been hiding in plain view as his uncle. Totally fits the modus if he's been able to keep close to Morrow the entire time this way and basically mocking him to his face. That's actually been the one place the comic has been a bit heavy-handed. It feels like that's supposed to be a huge reveal that they've not been coy enough up to this point. But it may be that is just a red herring Millar is putting in there. I mean it is SO obvious that it almost feels TOO obvious.

I am really looking forward to issue 4 but a bit disappointed that there are plans to carry it on (this thread was the first I've ever heard that). It feels more bold and artistic when you just put a crazy story out there - a forced continuation would just feel too much like writing for movies, but oh well.

Check the shops in your area. The 4 close to me still all have the first 3 issues available. I just bought them last week and can't wait for the 4th.

Thanks, but I did that and they're sold out. I guess I just have to wait untill the trade comes out.

The Guy who runs/owns the shop I buy at says that Nemisis, Kick Ass and Superior are supposed to cross over (kinda like Invincible and Astounding Wolfman) I don't see how they could all fit into one reality. Maybe Superior and Nemisis but Kick Ass just doesn't seem to fit.

Here's the preview art for that:

And the article at Robot 6:

While I REALLY enjoy all three books I'm not sold on a crossover event. I can't see a way to make those three worlds jive without serious comprimise. But hey, I guess this is comics where anything can happen so we'll see how it plays out. I'm sure I'll end up picking it up, unless it's only in CLiNT
