(Checks board and site rules)
Ok, it looks like I'm safe.
I haven't been here that long (no, a few months isn't that long), so I wouldn't know if there would be some unwritten rule against this (please oh mighty smiters, stay your hand this once).
Seeing that there's a void of threads concerning noncommercial, independent, open-source, or fanmade games, I've decided to make my own.
I'll start with a question, which I'll provide my own answer to.
Has any noncommercial game gained your interest lately (or at all)? If so, could you be kind enough to share what they are?
For example, several games that impressed me lately include Iji (yes, I know its quite old), Blocksum (even older), Last Scenario and Exit Fate, and... (actually, I need to stop before I list my entire folder).

Yeah, it counts (Though due to lack of PS3, I won't be able to play it).

The XBOX Live indie game "Breath of Death" is a nice old-school RPG that is really cheap and has gotten a pretty good reception.

I'm loathe to download anything that's not connected to a big ebil corporation. There's no telling what kind of crap is hidden in those files, and I've had enough problems with computers as is. *shrug*

Honestly, I'm more worried about what's hidden within the files of corporate games, given that they actually have lawyers and such to fight against accusations. Safely downloading games, as with downloading anything, is a matter of vigilance and knowing where to look.

Right, you need to know what to look for and where to look. I just hate doing it. I don't like tinkering with security programs and taking the time to verify if a file or it's site are safe to download. So if I can avoid doing it, I will.
Given the option of going with an Indie title or mod from who-knows-who and downloading it from some fansite, or buying a corporately released PC/console game, I'll go with the latter every time and be done with it.

So get indy games from LIVE or Steam or PSN.

I'm cautious of picking up indy games. I remember when they did that indy game bundle for charity, where you could pay basically whatever you wanted. And they were all over the place interms of quality, from best game ever to delete immediately. Most leaning towards the latter.

The Impossible Game is one I would suggest. The music in it is amazing, but it makes it so much more addicting. The game play is simple. You are a square and you have to time your jumps to avoid hitting triangles and make it to the end of the level without doing it. It's such a basic game, but my god it's good.
And I don't know if Super Meat Boy would count, but if so, definately that game too. It's a tad difficult and can get frustrating at times, but it is very rewarding when you beat a level. The music is good, the controls are great considering how fast the player moves, and when you die there is no load time whatsoever. Just jumps right back to the beginning in less than a second. Doesn't feel punishing whatsoever.
