Hello people i'm hoping you can help me!
I am a comic book fan with a fiancee who doesn't understand my love for comics at all!
I want to explain to her how comics can be as intelligent as a novel and as beautiful as a painting (bit lame but you get my drift).
Could somebody out there please suggest a book or graphic novel to introduce her to the world of comicdom that is both intelligent and gorgeous?
Thanks for your help!

Books are your typical chicklit novels and films she loves Sex and the city but also likes seven. TV wise also likes House, Big Bang Theory and Gavin and Stacy.

Comic Book Resources columnist Johanna Stokes wrote a really great article explaining how to get your non-comic reading girlfriend to appreciate comic books. She advises letting her read Neil Gaiman's "The Dream Hunters" graphic novel as her first introduction to the wonderful world of comics and progressing from there. Now, whether or not the method Johanna describes will work for you, I couldn't say, but it was an intelligently written piece that will probably be of some use to you.

Firstly, let us know what kind of STORIES she likes.
Movies, novels, television series... whatever. If she likes anything, there'll be a comic to appeal to her.
That said, Jeff's recommendations are all solid. Steer clear of anything tights-n-fights-related.

My advice? Don't do anything about it.
You enjoy comics. Your girl must realize that if her boyfriend likes that art form, then there must be something interesting about it.
My wife considered my love of comics with no more than gentle bemusement for a good ten years before she picked one up. During that time, no matter what I tried to push into her hands thinking she'd like it, I failed. She had to come to them on her own.
She's still no fan, but there are a few European series that she enjoys from time to time.
I agree with The Confessor's choice of writer: get her something by Neil Gaiman.
The Death graphic novels "The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life" would be what I'd start with. It's got a female lead who acts like a female and the stories are of a mystical nature, which appeals to women.
But frankly speaking, I think getting a new fiancee would be easier than converting one to comics.

As long as she's not constantly busting your balls about it, leave it be.
And if she is constantly busting your balls about it, maybe time to reconsider your options? Because really, I don't think anyone who watches Sex And The City can lay claim to any kind of intellectual high ground.

My girlfriend wasn't even remotely interested in superhero comics, so I got her started with Y the Last Man, which she loved. Then she heard about the upcoming (at that time) Watchman movie, and asked if I had that. But she never got through the first issue and lost interest. I knew she was a big Tori Amos fan, so I bought her Comic Book Tattoo, and she definitely liked that.
This year, I got her the first two Madame Xanadu trades and she enjoyed those. But I loaned her Mage: the Hero Discovered, and she just didn't get around to reading it yet.
Overall, it seems like my girlfriend is likely to enjoy Vertigo comics, but not superhero comics. Too bad it looks like DC is going to end Vertigo soon.

Can you understand her watching Sex and the City? Accept that you have different tastes and drop it.

I have found that most girls do prefer something indie -non superhero- ish for whatever reason(s) i don't know why this is really.

if they dont understand im not sure you can make them understand. i mean we all have different interests and tastes. friends of mine dont understand why i like comics so much or why i buy/collect so many of them. years ago it used to irritate me that they didnt understand but these days not so much.

Nobody actually burned their bras.
As for Sex and the City, there's nothing wrong with liking the show per se, it's when the viewer buys into the exhibited lifestyle as something to emulate that it becomes a problem.

It would be easier to explain how some novels are stupid and some paintings are crap.

i have always thought its healthy for people to have seperate interests imho. i mean when everybody likes the same thing it becomes kinda tiresome and boring. difference is usually the key to making relationships last. as long as she doesnt make you throw out your comics; i wouldnt worry too much.
