View Full Version : Marvel needs a Chinese superteam...

And a real one this time, not just some nameless & faceless, disposable&forgettable red shirt wallpaper like on the Mighty Avengers. That's where DC is better than Marvel at the moment, they have the Great Ten (thanks to GM) , but Marvel has...nothing! You would have thought they would have done something with the China Force (super-agents with Chinese-zodiac-based powers) or the Eight Immortals (modernized take on said Chinese legend), both of whom were relatively-promising concepts introduced in the X-titles, but noooooo...
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d104/Lonewolf36/8Immortals.jpg
Which is indeed such a shame because Marvel trumps DC almost everywhere else in terms of international diversity, at least as of the current moment. They have actual superteams in Canada, Britain, Russia, France (true, they were stereotypes, they were obviously done with affection), Japan (not as good as Super Young Team, since SYT has a legacy backstory of Japanese superheroes in the DCU, whereas BH6 has none as apparently Japanese superheroes-Robot Master, Lita Gemstone (XFactor 116)- in the MU are too obscure, but it could be said that BH6 inspired their creation, since they were first), hell, even the Philippines has one (even if they were all ultimately cannon fodder. As a pinoy though, i really found the names to be objectionable), and of course the 50 States Initiative. And Marvel has also all those other older international superheroes from Contest of Champions, as well as their long-established classic non-white and/or non-American superheroes from the Silver Age onwards (Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Red Wolf, etc).

When considering imerging markets/up and coming economic powers this suggestion is not a bad idea. Asia will be the leader in world markets in the next 10 years. If Marvel were involved in world marketing this isnt a bad idea. A hero from the worlds second largest democracy (India)wouldnt be a bad idea either.

they are still called the Triumph Division. Once the originals died, their relative tooks over. It was a legacy thing and it explains it. I think they would have made a great mini because Red Feather and St. George are great code names as are The Wishing Man and Great Mongoose.

Would this Chinese team be beholden to the Peking (the hell with Beijeng) cabal of professed communists who have created the most ruthless and unscrupulous capitalist machine in history? Would they battle against the summary executions of protestors (their families honest to god get a bill for the bullet)? Would they make sure that radiator fluid isn't mixed in with baby formula? What would be their positions on the generation-long order that each couple to bear one baby, which led to countless families drowning newborn girls because boys were desirable as work slaves?
A Chinese team would be cool. But they'd have to be revolutionaries in a country where a veritable cabal of amoral thugs run the show, even though protests in the hinterland go largely unreported in the mainstream media.
Rather see an Indian team. World's largest democracy, unblemished elections, and a solid middle class that mirrors our own. The better parts, at least.

IIRC, China's pro-government team used to be China Force(Ox, Rabbit, Snake and Rat). And its dissident team was 3peace (Jade Dragon, Auric and Silver). They arent around now.
The People's Defense Force we saw in Mighty Avengers were basically an ill-disguised parody of the Great 10, that existed soley to be redshirted(aside from Marvel mainstays like Collective Man and Radioactive Man).
You actually got to see various foriegn super teams being something other than cannonfodder when there was an Alpha Flight book, since they were the go to team for dealing with international stuff.

Why have a super hero team, when you can have a team of awesome mystical Kung Fu champions?
While the Immortal Weapons are pretty cool, I wouldn't want them to be the superteam of China. Chinese culture and history is diverse and multifaceted. Martial Arts make up only a small part of it. Hence, why I'm a big fan of DC's The Great Ten. Sure, there is a Kung Fu practitioner on the team, but the team is made up of characters who not only represent the cultural, religious, and mythic aspects of China, but also some Chinese mentalities and ideas. Perhaps Marvel is kicking itself, because if it did try to create it's own Chinese superhero team, many would say that they were merely trying to copy The Great Ten. However, this Eight Immortals Team looks pretty cool.
As for me, I'm not so much looking for a Chinese super team, but rather one particular Chinese character to make an appearance in the Marvel Universe: Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. I've seen a lot of posters talk him in the Rumbles board over the years. I definitely think it would be cool to see him interact with the other "god" characters like Thor and Hercules.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if this could work in real life. You could have this team work in America, but I don't believe you could have a team that represents all of Asia. Indeed, I believe alot of Asian nations have uneasy relationships with another, China and Japan being prime examples. Just recently, China and Japan exchanged heated words with one another over a Chinese fisherman who was caught fishing in (supposedly) Japanese waters. Both see themselves as having distinct histories, languages, cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. While alot of the students I teach here love Japanese anime and songs, China still (and especially here in Nanjing) has a lot of animosity against Japan for the atrocities it committed during WWII. Indeed, I'd say most of Asia still feels that way against Japan.
A Chinese team would be cool. But they'd have to be revolutionaries in a country where a veritable cabal of amoral thugs run the show, even though protests in the hinterland go largely unreported in the mainstream media.
I don't consider myself a Maoist. Nor, am I a complete and total supporter of everything the Chinese government has done in the last 60 yrs. I think there are certain things that the Chinese government chooses to forget that I will never forget. I don't think that the Chinese government should be afraid of things like Facebook or Youtube.
At the same time, living and working here for the past 4 months has been interesting. I can only say that I have drank milk nearly every day since I have been here, and have never gotten sick. I work with many female co-workers who have a brother and a sister. I see families and their children happily playing in the parks at night. Whenever I have needed help or assistance, someone here has selflessly given of themselves to me (though Nanjing people are known for being forthright and helpful. Not like those Shanghainese ) I have not seen any Red Guard going around shouting "For the service of the people! For Chairman Mao!" I see that though China has gone through double digit growth and is the #2 economy in the world, it's still very third world and very poor, even in the cities. Hence, why things like government safety and regulations are not always enforced. While China has some sorted things in its history, the same could be said of the United States.
China has always been a love/hate thing for me. It can't fit neatly into any one category. At best, you can only say that the situation is "complex." Try and untangle it, and the Chinese will only make it more complex.

Take the remnants of the People's Defense Force, include Jade Dragon from 3Peace, add in someone from China Force and one of the Immortal Weapons, and create one or two new characters (I like Tien Long's Sun Wukong idea) and I think you've got a pretty good basis for a team.
Marvel doesn't need any new Chinese super-teams so much as it needs to give the existing teams and characters some much-needed attention.

I agree with Tien Long and Expletive Deleted.
What Marvel needs last is a new team put out there with little reasoning other than satisfying diversity. Make the characters first and foremost on your priority list, and make the stories good, no matter what.
Don't make a character because you say to yourself "There's no heroes in Ireland. I think that should change."
Make one because you say to yourself "Oh shit, I just thought of this WICKED new character based in northern Ireland. "
Maybe I'm being too vague?

I wouldn't mind seeing China Force again. I'm sure a nation as big as China can support two superteams. Incidentally, China Force first appeared in Alpha Flight, so you might want to check their appearances there.
It would also be cool to see more of Foe Dog, Hoti the god of laughter, and Chen Hsu and the other Makluan dragons from John Bryne's Iron Man run.
Also, a group of Asian villains appeared in West Coast Avengers in the early 90s, called the Pacific Overlords. http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/pacificoverlords.htm They were mostly Japanese, but there were a few Australians and Chinese as well.

China Force also had other rogue agents ( Dog, Monkey, Horse, She-Devil ) who were also never seen again after they appeared in the '80s Agent GN from Marvel.
Other Chinese mutants were Nuwa (who had psychic sleep powers and was recently seen in Manifest Destiny) who was also part of 3Peace along with Jade Dragon and Collective Man, and Astra, the "mother" of Magneto's clone Joseph, was an ex-member of The Brotherhood (with the same celestial teleportation powers as Lila Cheney), who was at one time a fangirl of Erik. I wonder if Astra is still alive or if Apocalypse did indeed killed her during the Twelve storyline. And finally, the two female members of the 8 Immortals are apparently mutants as well, or at least the bestial looking one, the brunette has a plant-manipulation power (like Klara Plast) that could either be magical or mutant-based.

Nice job. But Japan and China have nothing in common other than being Asian countries, with the former having made your old home town, Nanking, a synonym for war atrocities. Bit Japan today is to China what an exquisite Yoshimura exhaust to Wang Inc. knockoff built by forced labor.
China is a fascinating place that treats Westerners with icy cold pitchers of Kool-Aid and a very warm stay. Bad business to run around waving little Mao red books. Big city China is a large puppet stage. Internal pressures in the poor, jobless sections of the vast country are rifts that will get worse after it's too late.
China's government considers itself Communist so it can re-distribute the national wealth into the Cayman Island bank accounts of the doddering old mob bosses. It owns so many Treasury Bills it almost owns the US.
China will break apart before the decade is out. It's a brutal police state with enormous wealth distributed in a way that will prove to be its undoing. The world would be better off when China breaks up--hell, along dynastic lines--and endures a painful yet necessary transformation by toughing it out like the pieces of the Soviet Union.

They haven't been used in a while, but I don't think they're dead or otherwise out of the picture.
That could work.
You could do Radioactive Man, Collective Man, Ox, Rabbit, Jade Dragon, Auric, Silver and Fat Cobra.
Those guys would be pretty entertaining to read about.

I'm pretty sure that Rabbit was killed by Feral in an X-Force annual, and Silver and Auric were killed in a Spider-Man annual.
Other than that, though, I like your idea.

Silver and Auric died then got merged into one of those Star Trek alien energy beings. So I figure they could come back from that.
Feral killing Rabbit is news to me though. Whoops.

You already have Jubilee! Isn't that enough?
Unless it's because she's secretly Half-White? (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=323411)
Chinese culture has a long tradition of outlaw heroes fighting corrupt government officials, e.g. the novel Outlaws of the Marsh, aka The Water Margin, so in addition to a govt-sanctioned team you could have a team of people like that.

there was once a team like that. 3 powered dissidents temporarily aligned with the Mutant Liberation Front and ended up being hunted by China Force.
Collective Man
Nuwa
Jade Dragon
but China could use some heroes with less...stereotypical power sets.

Its interesting how d most populated country in d world has no heroes of their own and has 2 rely on an American 2 save dem.............it would b interesting 2 c wat d Vietnamese would say.
Ba-bing! That compact insight was not only apt, sad and (Zoose forgive me) funny.
DISCLAIMER: No disrespect to the 50,000 US troops killed and the half-million "wounded" (as in blinded, burned, amputated etc.) Or, for that matter, the coupla jillion Viets slain while handing the US--US hockey team style--their first loss.

Why stop at just a Chinese Super Team?
How about also adding:
- A Portugese Super Team?
- A Columbian Super Team?
- A Hungarian Super Team?
- A Malaysian Super Team?
- A Yugoslavian Super Team?
