Can't go wrong with this guy:

However I don't think a lot of his work has been published stateside.

Other than that:

Gundam has had a ton of mangas, although only a few have been translated over here by Viz and Tokyopop. Most of them are mainly adaptations of the original series or are related to Gundam Wing.

Macross manga hasn't been really published over here, although there's been plenty of Robotech comics over the years.

Nadesico has a manga that's done differentally than the anime series....

There have also been manga adaptations of Star Wars and Star Trek. The Wars manga are mostly adaptations of the films in manga style, and are for the most part pretty good (Although they didn't adapt the last two prequels for some reason). The Trek stuff, not sure.

I think so yes, its an ongoing series

crest is the first part, banner is the later parts

Seconding this. It's a very well written piece of work, featuring war, culture and politics on a mindbogglingly epic scale while providing an intimate perspective through the well developed, likable main characters who play off each other very nicely, often hilariously.

Its just too bad that the author takes his sweet time with those books. That, and without a lot of luck, they probably won't continue making anime out of them. I wish they had at least kept translating the novels.
