So what's the buzz on the new Miyazaki movie?
I saw a blurb about it in the Washington Post. Has anyone seen it? Is it coming to the US?
What's Japan's reaction been?
Thanks.

From what I´ve read, Howl´s Moving Castle seems to be doing rather well in Japan, it even won or was nominated for something-something there.

When is it coming to the US?
Is it as well liked as Spirited Away or Mononoke?
I can't wait to see it but it seems like a very bizarre premise.

It seems to be on a level playing fields with your aforementioned films. Reviews are mixed as to whether it's better than his previous stuff, but they all agree that it's worth the watch.

If you want to get a preview of the movie, the best thing might be to go and read the book:

It might even be at your local library...

It's based on a Diana Winn Jones novel [with her full approval/involvement], and was released in the most theatres ever for a film's opening in Japan since..... Spirited Away. It's been a blockbuster. The US release is underway, and Pixar's sound studio is doing the dubbed version like they have for the other Ghibli films. It'll be out sometime in 2005, not sure when, but I'm GUESSING [emphasis on GUESSING] probably shortly after the release of the new 3 Ghibli DVD's in March. Depends on what Disney decides to do.

While I really really really want to see Howl's Moving Castle (because I loved Diana Wynne Jones' books as a kid) I also want my properly subtitled copy of Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds.
So all their dilly-dallying on that is much more frustrating to me than when the next new one will come out.
But I'm guessing they'll run it small again, because people will still walk out of subtitled films, and Disney doesn't expect the movies would have a large crowd.

You can check out the trailer here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=6528).
Some books (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=6523) from Viz this summer as well.

It's fortunate that John Lassiter is such a big Miyazaki fan, so we get really good dubs on his movies.

Batman is in this. Christian Bale is providing a voice. You can hear it in the trailer.

It's probably my favorite Miyazaki movie. It's like a synthesis of everything he has done before. War, innocence, the joy of flying, the necessity of dealing with our personal dark side, the horror of transformation: all his favorite themes are there, and it feels like a fictional conclusion to all his previous stories. It's beautiful to look at and very funny too, of course.
It came out here three or four months ago. I wonder why the U.S distribution is so far behind.

It's US release starts in June. As I hear it, the plan is a limited release in a couple of cities first, then eventually rolling out to around 800 screens. I've only heard about a dub - I haven't heard anything about a theatrical release for a sub.

A friend gave me a flyer for the film's engagment at the El Capitan here in Hollywood, and they do list times for both a sub and a dub, so that's good.

Yeah, there's definately two different versions out there. The Independent film theatres are the ones likely to carry the SUB, whilst the rest will be carrying the DUB.
Ofcourse, my wimpa$$ Independent theatre is showing the DUB instead. Shame, shame, shame on them.

I haven't seen any of his movies, but I want to see that Porco Rosso one. And if this one is as good as I've heard the others are, there's no doubt that it'll be a hit.
