View Full Version : Krypto - Yes or No?
I hope Lemire writes Krypto as well as Johns did in the upcoming Superboy series. I know it seems silly to have a super powered flying dog but there is a certain charm to Superboy stories (both Clark & Connor) when Krypto is in the story...
BTW DC are we ever going to see Busiek's Krypto story???
So fellow posters - do you think Krypto should be in the Superboy book?

Growing up on old VHS tapes of Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows may have clouded my judgement on how important a good dog is in stories, but I can't help it, it's ingrained in me now. I like Krypto. And unlike those old dog movies with the sad bits, Krypto never needs to be put down with a kryptonite bullet because he got the super-rabies. Unlike Old Yeller. Wouldn't cry like that again until Marley and Me...

I think he works better as a pet than as a 'Superdog', so no weird escapades as a crime fighter. But I do believe he'd work well in the Smallville scenes.

I never had a problem with Krypto and enjoyed some of his time in the recent books. Even though I voted yes, when I do see Krypto, a dog, within the DCU saving lives and taking part in a big event just waters down the situation at times. I can see the meaning behind one connecting as a pet lover and seeing the relationship of mans best friend, but sometimes I don't want to see a dog save the universe which makes it incredibly cheesy.
With that said, it's nothing I'll complain about and continue to like Krypto since he is in the family.

I don`t like the idea of Krypto because fiind hard to buy the idea of alien animals looking and acting just like Earth ones ( It`s hard enough to buy the huge ammount of alien races who look just like humans).
If DC at some point went with an origin like "Krypto is a kryptonian animal known to have sinilar behaviour to an Earth`s dog, and was genetcally altered to resemble one by Jor el, then sent to Earth to protect Kal-El and Kara Zor-El in their early years", or something like that, I think it wouldn´t clash wiith my suspension of disbelief so much.

Eh, Krypto doesn't really interest me. I don't really have a problem with him, but I would rather see a book without him in it than with him in it.

Yes but limited apperances.
Hell NO!! Well let me clarify. Not as a super pet. As a regular Pet. Yes. Super Pet with powers and abilities the same as Superman? NO!

Krypto exists, he's cannon, people have to accept that. Sure you could kill him off but it wouldn't exactly make for a great story. My advice is keep him around but don't use him as a plot device too often.

I dont necesarily like Krypto as a concept outside the Silver Age but since he's right now in the comics I dont mind him as long as he is used intelligently. So I voted Yes since I enjoyed how Goeff wrote him in Adventure Comics during his short sting.

Krypto has been worked into the continuity enough....I would prefer to move on.
Ideas like this always seem to encourage other superpets stuff.
Not my thing.

I prefer the Phantom Zone origin to him being just a Kryptonian dog his dad sent, but I'm not so far gone that I can't enjoy a caped flying dog with heat vision.

I don't like the idea of any survivors of from Krypton apart from Superman himself and Zod much less a super powered dog.
This is the same for Supergirl and most other Kryptonians. To me, it just seems to take away from the uniqueness of Superman. That's not to say the stories don't work and can't be great but something about it just annoys me.

I take a different approach: I've always thought that how Superman acts makes him unique, not his status as a sole survivor.
Frankly, he should stand out even among his people. His father certainly did.

Oh yeah, I completely agree. But you can't deny that traditionally, his status as a sole survivor is one of several things that really define him. The fact that he and he alone has all this tremendous power to do anything.
But still, I've always taken the view that Krypto was a step in the wrong direction. A massive step.

Krypto is a pet with superpowers, yet still has the same mind as a dog.He likes it when he's scratched near the ear,he chases after cats,he digs up the backyard, and he's cuddable. And he could dig up dinosaur bones and rush after a lion in Africa. What's not to like?

You know, from a logic standpoint, I hate that not only do Kryptonians look human, but Kryptonian dogs look like Earth canines.
However, nothing is quite so awesome as a good dog. When I actually see Krypto being a good dog, I can't help but want the lug around. But probably not showing up too often.
And that's where I draw the line. No more super pets beyond Krypto. Except maybe Ace . . . but dang it, Ace doesn't have any powers!

Oddly, I liked Dex-Starr more when I thought he was a sentient cat from another planet. I thought it was odd that he was actually an Earth cat that was chosen by a Red Ring. It does prove my theory that cats are evil though . . .

That works better outside of a shared universe. Besides, I don't think the loneliness of Superman being the sole survivor of Krypton has ever been done well. Except for maybe the brief pre-Silver Age, post-Golden Age Superman (who knew he was Kryptonian, greatly missed his planet, and was truly alone), the Reeve movies, and the animated series. Everyone else has done the sole survivor aspect wrong, IMO.

I love Krypton!! Especially, when I first saw him going up against the White Martians. He took on multiple villains and did fairly well until they out numbered him. Kudos for Krypto.

Even the Reeve movies had Zod and co., and arguably Supergirl if the spin-off is in the same universe. I think even the animated series had a Zod-clone in Jax-Ur, and Supergirl coming from Argo the Planet instead of the city, essentially circumventing the sole survivor thing.

I'm a Silver Age junkie, so I think if done well, Krypto fits in great in the Superman mythos.

The Supergirl film is in the same continuity. Every continuity except for the movie serials and the 50's television series featured other Kryptonians in some form. The Golden Age stories that came before Kandor, Krypto, Supergirl and the Phanton Zone and the period of 1986-2003 were the only times where Superman was truly the sole survivor.

Krypto is the greatest his scene in the Superboy Prime Sinestro Corps War Special was so badass. He is Conner's dog why wouldn't he be in it ?
Also to all the Krypto haters if you want realism maybe you should question comics as your source of entertainment.

Sorry. Krypto is eye rolling here. Based on that I would say to hell with the dog.
But luckily there are better versions of Krypton and I do like him with Conner too.
