This turns out to be the first mission of the Secret Avengers. Moony is still sporting the cape, and even Ant-Man is needling him about not getting the team killed, so Jake Lockley (MK) is a little uneasy to start with. But as the mission progresses and as simple as it first appears, it turns out to be a rather non-usual mission, fast. Moony shines in this because he has the Bat-Man cables that get the team out of a tricky situation, but Moony isn't the only one who shines. There is this one great image, of Valkarie and the horse, bursting through steel bulkhead in a ship, Antman grabbing the tonsils of the bad guy and making his firing gun mow down his own pirates, and the team working together like a well oiled machine, ready made, and beating on a ship full of pirates. All except War Machine. Rhodey had the weapons to mow down the pirates all on his own, and there wasn't any hostages to worry about, but they went into a fist fight instead. Rhodey only got a few repulsor blasts in on the giant sea creatures, but apart from that, Moony grabs the lime light.

I love that Marvel has hired Francesco Mattina to do covers again. I missed him from his War Machine days.

The Secret Avengers have this really cool Quin-Carrier, there is mention of Norman Osborn's getting forbidden artifacts from Project Pegesus when Norman shut it down, and the reappearnce of the horn of proteus, that summons sea monsters. As to the spoilers, the SA are called to rescue the crew of a super tanker hijacked by Captain Barracuda, who happens to have the Glove of Asteria, which can blown the flesh off your skin. The SA, beat the pirates, rescue the hostages and go home, saying mission accomplished as a team.

i wouldn't call the art great but it told the story well enough. was this officially their first mission? they seem more a fighting unit in this one than in the pages of Secret Avengers.

Honestly, I didn't particularly like the story, but the dialogue was crisp and I originally only got this for the Ryp art, which was fantastic and no letdown of his more 'indie' stuff.

I might check out the next issue.

There is no certainty it's their first, but yes, their team work was very crisp. The reason I say it's their first was because here Steve meets MK for the first time (MK #9), and the next book, they behave like they've never met Moony before that mission.

When you think how this action went, Steve Rogers hardly played a part. Each team member played as an individual. I never saw a leader in this, even till the end when Moony took control.

I liked this. Moony's POV on the team was interesting. Fun done in one mission.

he didn't even have his shield; that i remember. maybe Steve was sitting back and getting a feel for how each member operates.

Well, that would a good opportunity to do it, under a hail of bullets and see who comes out alive. It was a pretty ruitine mission for a team as bad ass as the Secret Avengers. Maybe Steve wanted to see what would happen if he wasn't around?

So, the subscription copy finally arrived, and I have one thing to ask; was Moon Knight being the only one strict about non-lethal?

good question. all i remember is Ant-Man telling him to try not to kill anyone accidentally. then Ant-Man accidentally caused a slew of deaths by "redirecting" Captain Barricuda.

I mean it clearly looked like they left all the pirates to die at the end, and there was a ton of carnage when Moon Knight came back up from getting the hostages.

casualties of war. technically they committed suicide. they all worked for Barricuda and he summoned the sea monsters (actually, i think Barricuda might have done all of the killing this issue). it's like in Batman Begins "i'm not going to kill you. but i don't have to save you."
