View Full Version : Matt Fraction Appreciation

What are you thankful for with Matt Fraction's run on Uncanny?

1. Successful jettisoning of Beast onto the Avengers franchise.

2. Fraction has explicitly inferred that he has no interest in writing Jean Grey.

3. Pixie.

4. The thug crew of Lobot, Verre and Bouncing Betty was one of the greatest foe teams since the Marauders' heyday.

5. Crisp endpoint to Brubaker's run of non-cosmic tedium.

Fraction has good idea :

- Utopia
- Dark Reign
- Messiah Complex

Especially with Utopia. It's a good change for the X-Men. And I agree with the fisrt, second and third point.

I like the idea of Utopia and the change to San Francisco.

I like the inclusion of a bunch of characters that were surprisingly never X-Men until now.

Just wish both were executed better. Oh and of course I appreciate that he likes Psylocke and brought her back to proper 616. Even if he does write Cyclops as Betsy's pig master.

FALSE!!!! Brubaker's run ended on high note with a 6 month stroll down the streets of SF. That arc was so real, so glorious, and full of strolling.

I do not think Agent_Torpor would appreciate people coming into his Matt Fraction appreciation thread and saying things that aren't appreciative.

It would be like me going into, say, a Jean Grey or Nightcrawler appreciation thread, and saying what useless characters they are and how happy I am to see them dead.

I'm not unhappy however.

I just don't think it's necessairy to come into an appreciation thread and do the exact oposite of what the title and opening post says.

(I miss Nightcrawler btw. He's one of my favs.)

I like his vision.
He's very Big-Picture. He makes large, obvious, noteworthy moves on the X-chessboard.
All the mutant race on one rock?
Check.
Sovereign nation?
Check.
Allied with Atlantis?
Check.
Magneto bows to Scott?
Check.
Bastion destroys the entire present?
Soon-to-be-checked.

His dialogue and use of a diverse cast could use some touch-ups, but on the whole neither of those detract from the epic he brings to the table.

I appreciate his work on Casanova, Immortal Iron Fist, and that new Iron Man annual, that was AWESOME. Looking forward to his Thor run too.

Oh, I guess I should say something positive about his Uncanny run. Uh....uh...uhhhey can you believe Casanova #1 comes out in full-color this week? Its gonna be awesome!

And Dani Moonstar humiliating Ares.

But I really have not one positive thing to say about Fraction's run on Uncannny, to date. So I doubt I will be posting very much here.

Irma was funny, and it's nice that at least one writer is willing to cement Grant Morrison's run as actually having happened.

In all seriousness:

~Utopia was a really fun storyline and direction for me. It was great seeing them face off against Norman Osborn and his ilk.

~Though I can't say that they've done MUCH, its been great seeing a variety of X-Men in each book. Though there is a clear focus on a chosen few, naturally, its nice to see cameo appearances and the occassional wall paper being given a moment or two to shine, however briefly -- [ Karma, Dazzler, Northstar, Psyclocke, etc]

~Cyclops has been written as a capable and competant leader (imo) and accomplished some amazing things for his people (even if through unconventional means)

~He wrote a really bad ass scene for Rogue during the Predator invasion, allowing readers/viewers to enjoy a stunning display of her newly attained control over her siphoning abilities. It is one of my favorite Rogue moments.

~He gave Danger a purpose among the X-Men, beyond just being the resident Robot or security guard. Even Danger likes her job.

Two separate statements. He called her Irma. And he also cemented parts of Morrison's run as having happened, such as Sublime, the U-Men, etc.

But wasn't Morrison's intent to have the Cuckoos initials spell out S.P.I.C.E. or something?
So wouldn't Fraction's appointing the name Irma have cemented that intent?

What were they all named again?
Sophie.
Phoebe.
Irma (Mindee). -I thought it was funny.
Celeste.
Esme.

I think that's what they mean about the Morrison comment.

Yes, this also, but I'm tired and couldn't remember all the names. Austen named Mindee, not knowing about SPICE, so the Irma thing returns them to an acronym.

Things I am thankful for:

- The move to San Fran, then ultimately Utopia. I love this. It's different and it's fun. I love that the X-Men have a city to call their own and post-Second Coming, still using Utopia as a homebase.

- Dazzler's return and her show of power during the Sisterhood.

- Psylocke's return.

- Northstar's return.

- The X-Club.

- Fixing Mindee Cuckoo to Irma Cuckoo.

- The New Mutants going out for drinks at a bar.

- Dani Moonstar vs Ares.

- The riots in San Fran.

- Emma and Storm's discussion about leadership.

- Nightcrawler and Logan moments during SFX, then ultimately Logan's speech at Kurt's funeral.

- I hate Namor with a passion. And yet.... (uggh.. I hate to say it but) he's kind of growing on me.

- I don't dislike Magneto's current role either... which is weird for me.

All in all: I appreciate Matt Fraction for doing something different for a change! It's not my favorite run by a long shot. People may not like it, but they can't deny that he's done new things with the X-Men and helped change up the status quo a bit.

I can appreciate Matt Fraction's ideas rather than the execution itself, which is often lacking somewhat. From his run, I like the idea of the x-club, utopia as the base for the x-men, and the idea of a revolving cast (even if it has not really worked out that way). I also enjoy the new/returning members of the x-men, such as the return of Psylocke and Fantomex, and the addition of Dr Nemesis and the x-club.

I'm not a big fan of his Uncanny X-men. But Fraction made this possible:

So, I'm not really much of a hater. In fact, I'm actually a big fan. :))

How can I hate him after what he did for Daniel Rand and after writing a flawless comic book called Casanova? He might not have succeeded in Uncanny X-men but he has written works that I believe would qualify as "genius

-That bit where Emma is teaching her Helions values was quite good.

His run is pretty much what the X-men would be like if Claremont's run never happened.
Good ideas hes had since taking over are few and far between.
Hes ruined Sublime already
Hes ruined Iceman
Hes ruined Beast and forced him out of the X-men although this good because now hes written by Bru but character derailment still stands.
Hes ruined Emma
Hes ruined Psylocke
Hes ruined Fantomex
Hes ruined Pixie.....turning her into the next Jubilee???

His whole run is pretty much character derailment with power feats to keep the fans salivating while nothing continues to happen.

I remember someone asked the writers why the X-men have strayed so far away from their civil rights motif and they were stunned because they felt Fraction's run still showed that.............

Uncanny 500 was the biggest letdown ever no celebration of how far the X-men have come its just another Magneto attacks one and done.

I like Matt on books that he gets and actually cares about. His X-men is pretty much why I never liked the Order. good ideas surrounded by bad storytelling.

His X-Men is ATROCIOUS beyond my belief (and I'm a very open-minded person). I loved his Casanova, though. He's clearly wanting to use his Zephyr Quinn archetype somewhere, and it somewhat fits what he's been trying to do with Dani Moonstar (not that you'd notice her stand out among the millions of other characters).

My favorite character in Casanova was the space cowgirl whose name I can't recall. I'd love to see her archetype exported to Uncanny. Perhaps that "Outlaw" character on Utopia, god knows she's got no pre-existing characterization.

Some more good things:
-Saddie Sinclair.
-Beast was awesome.
-Scott repressing all of his feelings into a box.

Sisterhood was really the only arc I truly disliked. It could've easily been the best one and his Emma's just too soccermom, but not soccermomish enough to be interesting.

Outlaw is from Gail Simone's Deadpool run and subsequent Agent X series.
