Its a fun and growing genre you'll find in everything from books to comics to anime, even music.

Tell YABS about your favorite depictions and creators.

My choices:

The Scar by China Mieville - The 2nd, and in my opinion, the best of Mieville's New Crobuzon novels. Its a stand alone story, so you don't need to read the rest of his work to enjoy the unique ocean-going setting. Enjoy underwater kingdoms, marine monsters, a master warrior who fights in alternate timelines and a pirate city with a twist so delightful, you'll wonder why you didn't think of it yourself.

The Court of the Air series by Stephen Hunt - Hunt's novels are skimpy on characterisation, but are packed with so much manic action and insane ideas, you won't mind a bit; everything from turtle people, steam powered robot knights, Aztec insect gods, talking dinosaurs, cannibal hawkmen and steampunk X-Men. Each novel picks up speed like an avalanche and concludes with a rousing, over the top finale. Loads of fun.

If you've never caught this gothic horror Steampunk movie, "The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Geographic_Explorations_of_Jasper_M orello)", well, I recommend it.

In fact, you might be able to find the animated 30 min. move on youtube with a bit of hunting.

The comic book turned webcomic Girl Genius (http://www.girlgenius.net) is a really excellent example of Steampunk.

Thirding Steamboy. It was an epic, awesome movie full of improbable science in the industrial age and steampunk action. Was anyone else rooting for Robert Stephenson rather than the main character?

I guess the only steampunk I have read was that Matt Fraction Tesla mini series thingy.

Does this qualify?

I have a copy of The Difference Engine on my shelf waiting to be read.

Also, the anime Last Exile has some steampunk to it. Though also some magical power supplies. Oh and gorgeous character and ship designs by Range Murata.

Also, yeah, I need to check out more Steam Detectives. It's rather like a hybrid of steampunk and pulp / detective fiction if I remember right.

I really need to reread that series.
I love Fullmetal Alchemist and the Bioshock series. Bioshock's world is set in the 1950s to 1960s! That's like a century too late! ACK! Why do people keep calling it steampunk?! It's is firmly post WWII in it for heaven's sake!

I keep seeing Full Metal Alchemist called it and I don't get it. It is an alternate WWI, with accompanying tech. 'Diesel punk' if anything. They have regular cars and everything, right?

Sorry, I'm a stickler when it comes to nomenclature, be it biological or literary. To me, steampunk is firmly the mid to late 1800s. I notice a lot of people jam the early 1900s into it and I think it just doesn't work. The zeitgeist and technology of the turn of the century and the 1900s just doesn't fit with steampunk.

I guess the only steampunk I have read was that Matt Fraction Tesla mini series thingy.

Does this qualify?Naw. Tesla is just post steampunk. Hell, Tesla is almost his own darn sub-genre himself. Sci fi writers love to run off with him and his stuff.
