The Icelandic Parliament voted unanimously on Friday to allow same-sex marriage (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65A3V020100611), thus making yet another country that is better than both the US and my own country of Australia in that regard.

I was happy enough with Portugal, where there was a majority vote and the President's veto was overruled, but unanimous? Rock on, Iceland!

Only nation to have an openly gay head of state too.


"The attitude in Iceland is fairly pragmatic," said Gunnar Helgi Kristinsson, a political scientist at the University of Iceland. "It (gay marriage) has not been a big issue in national politics -- it's not been controversial."

You'd think with a gay vice-chancellor, my country would be able to do better than "civil unions" by now.

Was his veto overruled? I thought he signed it reluctantly so Portugal could move on to other things like the economy.

My mistake, you're right - he would have been overruled, so he conceded and got on with other things.
