I'm a classical literature major who loves detective stories so it looks like Greek Street is the perfect fit. I haven't read much about this series, but the first trade looks rather tempting. I was wondering what the general consensus on the boards was regarding this book.

Edit: Completely missed the other thread about this. Don't know how, but it happened. Sorry.

I tried it, but for me it failed as a mythology book, and it failed as a crime book, so I droppedd it after three issues.

And the twisting of mythological names into modern English kept taking me right out of the story.

The series has only recently kicked into high gear. Buy the first trade, it may start slow but by the end you'll want more. The only only letdown is that the second volume isnt due till November

A book that failed badly, myth, crime wise.

Its not fit to wear the Vertigo name.....

Dude, Lucifer and Fables sucked in their first trades as well - this one was great by the end of it's first.

Give it a chance.

Yeah, why can't it be more like Kid Eternity or Un-Men...

Fables sucked ? Thats an amazing sucking early in comparison to this series.

Greek Street i was interested in storywise and the quality artist of Northlanders vol 1 but it was very disappointing.

I usually give a series 6 issues to show potential. I cant do more than that.

It sure did - showed no signs of originality, and it's initial arc ended on an anti-climax.
It took Animal Farm for it get good.

It was interesting by issue five.

Stick with it - don't make it another Minx or Outlaw Nation.

Wouldn't you prefer something that starts slow and builds to greatness, rather than something that starts strong then begins to sag?

Hmm, looks like opinions are divided. Well I suppose I'll get the first trade and see what I think. I'm optimistic though.

Divided between the cool kids and the nerdlingers.

Cool kids love the book.

Nerdlingers don't.

I like Greek Street although it is slow out of the gate. It also takes a while for the characters to start distinguishing themselves. Reading it monthly, the "recap" pages really helped.

But once you get into the groove, it's really, really good.

I suspect that this title will read better in trades.

I've almost dropped it from my pull list a couple of times now, but it keeps on being just good enough for me to keep reading it. I've gone back a re-read a few issues and they've been better the second time through.

This series has real potential, but it's not quite there yet.

I just finished reading Greek Street, Vol. 1 and I liked it a lot. Thanks to those who recommended I pick this up. I love the concept and I was hooked by the second issue. I like how although Milligan is using the myths as a base that he's not tying himself to them. I like all of the characters, Detective Dedalus and Lord Menon in particular which I find weird since I've never liked Agamemnon. I'm also a fan of Chantal and the recap she gives at the beginning of each issue. That's all. I can't wait to read the next trade!

Glad you liked it. This is one of my favorite ongoing books from vertigo right now. The others being Fables, the Unwritten- which you might want to check out too- and Northlanders. There are more Vertigo books I like, but these are the only ones I get every month. The others I get as trades come out.

I actually picked the first trade of Northlanders up with Greek Street and found that to be a very good read as well. I'm wanting to pick up the other two trades that are out and then I may look into the first trade of Unwritten as it seems to be fairly popular on these boards. Thanks.
