View Full Version : Histories of Classic Characters ?

I would really like it if someone could write books ABOUT classic comics characters ( Others types , too , but let's just stick to this now . ) , covering their " life " over the years , the different directions they took , the internal workings in the companies behind that at any various times , some notable stories that were never published , some of the best/worst/notable-oddball stories...Really , imagine looking at the 70-ish years of Superman or Batman , the approaching 50 of Spider-Man , etc.
I imagine these being unauthorized histories - meaning not officially OK'd by DC , Marvel , or any other of their companies's owners , honestly accurate but opinionated .
They'd be written by and for fans (but intelligent ones) , so the point wouldn't be to tear them apart , but they WOULD give opinions:smile: !
As unathorized histories , perhaps we could have titles like:
" THE SKYSCRAPER-SWINGING TEENAGER FROM QUEENS
An Unauthorized History Of Marvel Comics' Spider-Man "
" THE HERO FROM ANOTHER PLANET
An Unauthorized History Of DC Comics' Superman "
and so forth .
A real commercial problem this brings up is that , then , it is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY  unlikely that any of the companies would grant the nessecary liscences to use copyrighted artwork and repros !
Perhaps this could be somewhat dealed with by using what combination art and movie-TV still repros and clippings that are PD - And , possibly , trying to get some art not actually OF the copyrighted characters , BUT by artists associated with the copyrighted ones , by artists associated with the character - A Superman book , say , could look for some Joe Shuster , Al Plastiono , John Byrne , Jerry Ordway , etc. art from various places .
This was the book's jacket/publicity could honestly say: " Includes art by Artists Joe Shu. , Al..." , etc.
I am really serious here .
A Spider-Man book could go through all the years of the various tites , see how various eras differed , talk about things like the " whay did Steve Ditko leave ? " and how much did he contribute controversy , likewise Joe Simon's claims , the story of the Gwen killing and the claim that Stan ordered the mid-70s clone story , a look at the 90s clone disaster...and so on .
These would not be sociological/academic histories , either , that concentrated on " Superman's symbolism as a Jewish immigrant " , blaah blaah blaah , and stuff like that .
There's a place for that , but this would be exploring the comics (and the movie/TV/etctera versions)themselves , and the stories behind their creation:biggrin:!
Actually - I a touch fear to say this:frown: - but those 90s unathorized Star Trek , etc. , histories that the late Hal Schuster?? used to publish , often written by James Van Hise , were part of my inspiration here !

...Now , needless to say , I realize that I'd need lots and lots of lawyers - or at least ONE really good one:biggrin: !!!!!!!!! to protect me from what might be DC or Marvel's Distinct Unhappiness at such a tome:tongue: .
However , I do believe , in the end , if you're careful about it , " history/criticism/commentary " IS protected under the First Amendment:smile: !
A real problem here , frankly , is , especially for DC characters , one might really need more than one writer , to be knowledgeable about all these years and years of , for DC , never-reprinted 40s and 50s stories .
Too , frankly , I think there's some generational divide/" burnout factorr " among comics fans , I believe many of the " original " comics fans don't much care about later-years stuff , and that even goes for the " younger than them " Sixties-through-Eighties fans , age and finally having had enough and perhaps being turned off by the excesses of the embossed covers/kicking of asses era may have turned them off - Perhaps the writing might have to be divided/parcelled out somehow .
I have seen a book listed called " Spider-Man Confidential " that appears to , almost , come close to this , anyway...But , it's concentration is apparently more on the TV series and the making of the first Sony/MacGuire movie , with comics somewhat secondary .
I'd like a book that concentrates on the COMICS versions of these charactes FIRST ! Really , I do think it would be interestin...
When Superman turned 50 , there was this book titled " Superman At Fifty - The Persistence Of A Legend " , that had a bunch of articles by folks - who weren't even comics fans or buffs for the most part , they were selected because they were from Cleveland ! Bleehh . I've used up my emoticons , so...
There's been so many years of comics fan/professional fan journalism , too , that one could check through for past details , so many years of Comixscene and The Comic Reader and The Buyer's Guide To Comic Fandom and The Comics Journal and so forth and so on and scoobie doobie doobie ( Used up , again , my 'moties ! )...
( Oh , it's not that I'm unaware of the need for " more normal people- attracting stuff ",,,Sure , speak of movie/TV/etcetera version , maybe try to get Nicolas Hammond or Adam West to writr forwards , to have something on the cover...)

...I guess I halfway did , thank you , I buy enough TwoMorrows stuff as is:eek:!!!
Even that , however , with ists , apparently copious , official illos might still have to be a little too " nice "...Still , it looks good  !
Thank you:tongue::smile:!!!!!!!!!!!
I see that that's just the Wesinger , and post-Wesinger ( Schwartz and others . ) age...Actually , the fact that it goes up , apparently , to 1986 makes me think of something that I've meant to post here for a while , though perhaps I " should " post it at the Superman forum...Which is...........

Yeah, it's only late '40s to '86, although there's a long round-table of post '86 creators in the back.

On the other hand: It's brilliant and I love it.
