View Full Version : Favorite New Show of the Season?

With the season drawing to a close this is a good time to discuss which new shows have made an impact, and in some cases will hopefully make a return.

For me it's a simple choice: Community. I didn't see until five or six episodes into the season, but it's quickly become a must-see for me. I already knew Joel McHale was funny on the The Soup, but that's a show I only check out sporadically. Every episode I've seen had memorable lines.

"Knock, Knock. Who's there? Cancer. Oh good, come in. I thought it was Britta."

"Now do you want to stand here talking about clothes like a couple of girls, or do you want to use sticks to hit balls across a felt table, like men? "I WANT TO HIT BALLS!"

"I can't think of anything more frightening than a half-Polish, half-Arab virgin in his thirties. One way or another, that ends with an explosion."

Also, it has these...

Adventure Time! With Finn and Jake

When Abraham Lincoln takes Finn's spirit to the Moon and have a chat with him, you know it's something to watch.

I, too, am enjoying Community.

And also the new version of Parenthood. I hope it comes back for a season 2. Heck, I hope it gets to finish its first. It's on at 10pm. Who's watching anything at 10pm? I've watched them all 'on demand' so far.

Justified is the only new thing i'm watching right now.

The aforementioned Community and Justified for me, too, plus Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

Community is good (still can't get over what'shername on the left of your picture there is Peter's wife in 'Mad Men'!), in fact it seems to get better as it goes along.

But I think Modern Family wins out for my favourite new show this year.

I really like Community, but Modern Family has to get my #1 vote.

Spartacus and Justified are both good. The League on FX was worth watching.

That's Alison Brie. I've never seen Mad Men, but I can totally picture her as a 1950s wife. I loved the scene where Ahbed practiced picking up women on her by being Don Draper, and that was before I knew she was on that show.

I haven't seen Modern Family yet. That's the one with Ed O'Neil or the one with the Gilmore lady?

I'm going to say Human Target! 24 use to be the must see action tv show. Now its Human Target.

A close runner up is Stargate Universe. I think it would be #1 if it wasn't for all the terrible earth stuff. But the first episode back, "Space" was awesome. I hope they do more episodes like that!

I also like Flashforward a lot. There are times when Flashforward is my #1 fav new show. Though, sometimes, it does get a bit soapy. lol. Overall, though, very interesting mystery and good characters.

Oh and can't wait to see the new Dr. Who! I have a feeling that it'll top Human Target and all the rest.

I agree, Space was really good compared to the rest of the season.

I also like Community, and The Pacific, but I don't think that one counts.

Ed O'Neil. It kinda reminds me of Arrested Development, which I LOVED. Strong characters in wacky (yet still somehow believable) situations.

Parenthood is a pleasant surprise. I had no intention of watching it until i saw the promo clip of Lauren Graham dropping her kids off at the first day of school, then I was snared.

Except that it is mostly talk and no action. Though Jacky Earl Haley is pretty entertaining. I like Mercy as well.

Definitely Community! It's easily my favorite thing on tv right now, which is pretty remarkable for a show still in its first season.

(And, just to be clear, Donald Glover is the resident hottie on the show.)

I agree, I'm loving Parenthood. I didn't like the pilot so much, but I've enjoyed all the subsequent episodes.

The pilot was very strange. I kept getting a sense of deja vu because, I guess fittingly, some of it was word for word from the movie. Not all of course, but some.

I find the writing to be very realistic in some ways. People not hearing each other - just saying 'what?' then moving on, and characters always talking over the top of each other, and so on. Life is not finely scripted where characters talk in turn. I like that about it.

Also, yes to Parks and Recreation, whoever mentioned that. It started out as an Office clone, but they've moved Leslie into new territory where she is a completely different character than just a female Michael Scott, which is how I thought she initially came across.

That's Trudy Campbell? Didn't know that. Anyway I agree with the OP (Thanks for posting those great quotes btw), Community is my favorite new show, it has one of the funniest characters I've seen on TV in a long time (Abed) and is just over all really funny.

2nd would be "Parks and Recreation" Tom Haverford and Andy Dwyer are the best characters on that.
Adventure Time is also a funny show.

The best new show is Glee, extremely addictive. Music has become such a terrible autotune mess that's its nice to have a respite where I can hear songs sung well.

But the most surprisingly quality show is The Cleveland Show I thought it would be an animated Family Guy and it turned into an animated Roseanne.

Modern Family is the best new series for me. Then again, we haven't had many over here yet.
Human Target starts next week and V starts later in the month; so if my opinion changes then I'll edit my post accordingly.

Parks and Rec is in its second season. Or maybe third, didn't it start as a mid-year replacement?

After Community, I'd say Spartacus and Justified. Human Target is OK, I hope it sticks around, but I can't say I'll be too upset if it doesn't. It's just a bit too much fluff for me.

Right now, I think I'm loving Justified the most.

Then Parenthood, which is a great late night, right before bed show.

Third is Human Target, just because it's such pulp fun.

And then Community.

Flashforward has improved since it came back from the episodes where the characters did nothing. Really, there is this huge mystery the FBI is tracking down and you are lead investigator so you're going to take a week off from work and no one is going to worry, even though you are on a tight time table of when you have to solve everything by? And V is interesting but hasn't grabbed me.

Glee, by far. (Comedies I may only catch after they've been around a couple of seasons. It's difficult to pencil them in.)
