I Dream of Magik II: Jimaine Szardos Appreciation

With Nightcrawler's impending demise :frown: (sorry creaky) as well as the rising prominence of magic users in the larger Marvel universe it is only fitting that the greatest sorceress affiliated with the X-Men receive a thread in which her fans can discuss her greatness. Thus here is the appreciation thread of Daytripper, AKA Magik II, AKA Amanda Sefton, AKA Jimaine Szardos.


Over the years Amanda has been many things. Daughter of the sorceress supreme, circus performer, stewardess, ruler of limbo, ally of the X-Men, and a member of Excalibur. As a member of the British superhero team where she took the codename Daytripper. Jimaine was the mystical expert and helped Excalibur with their occult encounters. It was thanks to her magical abilities that Brian Braddock was saved from the time stream and Rachel Summers sent into it.

Her most iconic role, however, would come after the death of the mutant Illyana Rasputin. Taking Rasputin's magical Soul Sword from Kitty Pryde for safe keeping Jimaine and her mother Margali would use the Sword's power to overthrow the demon Belasco. With Belasco defeated Jimaine assumed control of Limbo and took on the title Magik II to confuse her enemies. She successfully controlled and ruled Limbo (better than her former counterpart) until Marvel editorial decided they wanted to bring Magik I back (Boo). Somehow she was ejected from Limbo as revealed when Hellion and Surge rudely questioned her while trying to free Illyana (rude bastards).

Since then she has been MIA. Should the X-Men seek out the aid of a real sorceress in their current time of need? Should Kurt seek her out and ask her for help like he used to before it's too late? Where are her gay snakes? Should she kill Witchfire and take back control of Limbo? Should her fans hex Marvel until they bring her out of character limbo? All these questions and more can be discussed within this thread.

This thread has nothing to do with Pixie as I've been a fan of Amanda's far longer. Besides Pixie needs no help against Illyana. Pixie is A-list and is appearing in the flagship title. Illyana is in a satellite book and is the worst character in that book.

In his solo, Kurt muses about whether he sees her as his sister or his lover or both. Anyone under the presumption that Kurt is a healthy-minded person devoid of issues just needs to think of that to stand corrected. He's so insecure about how a normal woman might see him that he's avoided the matter altogether by only hooking up with his foster sister and an alien who didn't even know what humans looked like when they met.

In Uncanny X-Men #153, where Kitty told Illyana (pre-Belasco) a fairy tale with the X-Men as characters, Kurt appeared as a Bamf. Later, during Nightcrawler's first four-issue mini, he discovered a whole tribe of Bamfs in another universe.

So I personally don't think Amanda has a place in the current X-verse. Even Magik isn't really associated with her magic so much. She's just a transporter. Plus the X-Men really don't work with humans and non mutant superheroes anymore.

I'm hoping if/when they focus more of Strange she might pop up there. Although maybe they can do another search for a SS that she can be in the running for. Though they should have let Dr Voodoo have the title for longer. I liked him.

As an unabashed fan of Illyana Rasputin/Magik, I thought I'd chime in to say that I agree with this comment. I loved how Amanda Sefton used to assist the X-Men on a number of occasions, like during the Kulan Gath story or the Muir Island Saga. Seeing her wear the standard blue-and-yellow uniform was great.

What I'd really like to see is a) an explanation of Amanda's whereabouts and current status, b) exploration of her mystical heritage (really, as Margali's daughter and successor to the Winding Way, she should be uber-powerful), and c) a team-up with either Illyana ("So...uh... we both shared the same codename, wielded the same magical weapon, ruled the same hell dimension, we're both blonde, and our only friends are a bunch of mutants, demons, and gay snakes. Coffee?") or some of the Marvel Universe's other heavy-hitting magic users.

Agree. Sleeping together, yet calling the same woman "Mom" is a bit creepy.

But for what it's worth, I really liked the snakes. I'm all for bringing Brad and Roger back from comic limbo....oh wait, they're supposed to be guarding Limbo.
