The fight were he consistantly struck from the shadows using surprise and fear to his advantage?

That scene shows many things, but it doesn't show any huge speed advantage, just a steal one. Which doesn't help him in the arena.

None of whom were a tenth as skilled and intelligent as Holmes was.

Granted, the opponents Holmes fought against weren't all that impressive, but his cunning and precog is way more impressive than Bale's one hit wonders.
