It's Roman Polanski's new film, starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor. It's received good reviews for the most part, from what I can tell.
If we can somehow find a way to keep this from turning into a thread about Polanski's past actions, that would be fantastic. I guess that's unlikely, though.

I dunno.
I'll wait and see.

Just saw a commercial for it, and it looked pretty good. I might see it, I have 2 friends that work at a local theater so I could see it for free, so why not?

Watch the media not talk about the movie at all, but instead about the man himself.

It looks killer. I'm definitely looking forward to it. But I don't get to see it for free. :(

Not a chance.
Without discussing "his past actions" I'll simply say that I haven't seen a single film of his since he perpetrated those actions, and that's not about to change. Maybe when he's dead.

I sympathize with you. I was so happy when one of my friends who was my "movie-buddy" got a job there because it saves me at least $30-40 a month. Then another one of my friends got a job there, so now I have two venues to get free movies. I haven't payed for one in over a year!

Nice.
I don't mind paying for a film I really enjoy. But sure, free is better. :)

Oh man, everything thing in that video just screams 90's!
Just skimmed through "Attack of the Slime Monster" on Youtube. That "monster" was so awesome.
Plus you got to love the racial stereotypical characters.
This is one of the series I would've loved as a kid!

This. While I appreciate that the OP does not want this thread to be derailed into a discussion of the director's criminal past, I won't financially support his career. Plus the awarding of a film prize to Polanski in Berlin on supposedly 'political', grounds just strikes me as wrongheaded.

Looks pretty interesthing. Oh, wow. I didn't even realize it was Polanski's. Guess the marketing team did a good job not featuring it. I recently saw a doc on the Polanski case. Despite his actions being in inexcuseable, the judge was on a witch hunt and fame crazed. The punishment they were going for did not fit the crime and they weren't even letting the girl or her family in on the case. It was a case of neither side really being right.

Brilliantly, Ghost Writer was shown to us regularly at school. We then had to to grammar-based workbooks about the episode afterwards. Fantastic.
I won't go and see it. It looks okay, but I haven't paid to see a Polanski film in my life and it'd take something Chinatown good for me to even consider it.

i don't. but mainly because i'm not a fan of Polanski's work. well, other than Chinatown and The Pianist. i still want the two hours of my life back for watching Pirates.
and i'm not a big fan of Robert Harris. well, other than Fatherland. but after that first novel, his work just seemed a bit too impressed with itself.

If I only supported movies directed by or starring people who I considered morally worthy of support, I wouldn't get to see many movies. I don't know much about this one, so I don't know if I'll see it. But if I don't, it won't be because of Polanski.

Were the grammar worksheets made by the teacher, or were they an actual official Ghost Writer workbook? If so then that's amazing, but if not it's just as awesome!

Man, we watched it, too! Go elementary school in the 90s. Though we had no assignments. Also, it was on TV when I got home, after doing homework, so I'd watch it then. My library used to have a store in the mall to sell all their old, broken, or outdated material for a price to help support the place AND....I found a Ghost Writer VHS. I snatched that thing up so fast the poor worker's head spun. It's in a box somewhere in my storage room...but it's *miiiiine.*
To this day, I want a ghost writer to explain my reading homework to me, especially the neutral tones of combating fallacies.

For what it's worth, that also applies to Woody Allen. And I can't stand to listen to The Mamas & the Papas anymore. I am as God made me.

Well, I haven't listened to the Mamas and the Papas since the truth came out about that relationship, which is a shame since I grew up listening to them. And Woody Allen, man I just can't watch him because he gives me the heebie jeebies. As for Polanski? Uh, no for all the recent reasons that have come to light.

The trailer looks boring as hell. You have Pierce Bronson as a former British Prime Minister and someone has taken to eliminating all of his ghost writers on his autobiography despite the fact that they could just eliminate the former pm.
What is fascinating is that I've seen the trailer half a dozen times in several variations, as I go to the movies every Friday, and haven't seen Polanski's name once. I bet his investors had no idea his former issues, which he is still wanted for by the way, would come back to bite them on the ass. Good for them, as they are fronting a known fugitive child molester on the lam. Aiding and abetting as far as I'm conerned and that applies to the people who see the damn thing as well, as you are knowingly funding his escape from justice.

I saw his name on commercial last night or the night before. Um, I don't know the exact channel, though. But either DIY or BCCA since I live on them lately.

They were actual official merchandise I think. The BBC and Channel 4 used to show blocks of educational programmes intended for use in schools over here, and a lot of them came with books and the like. Ghost Writer was one of them, and something about a dragon's eye I can't remember the name of. Although that featured a cartoon wizard singing about grammar in priceless songs such as "Magic E". Ahem.
AND....I found a Ghost Writer VHS. I snatched that thing up so fast the poor worker's head spun. It's in a box somewhere in my storage room...but it's *miiiiine.*
I just looked it up - according to Wikipedia
"In Summer of 2006, BBC School Radio produced a radio series of Ghostwriter for primary school students. Character names from the TV show were retained, though voiced by new children. Music and the theme song were also kept, and a new musical jingle for children to recognize Ghostwriter's appearances was created."
Awesome.

Well it's clearly based on Tony Blair and/or George W Bush. If I wanted to watch a dramatisation of their time in office I could watch any of the numerous versions already out there.

I remember reading that when my friends were discussing the awesomeness that was 90s fashions. (We were also discussing Babysitter's Club and Sweet Valley High.)
I love that Ghostwriter got an update for a new generation. Far better than Dora. Wait, the UK has a radio channel? Man, we just get a shitty Channel 1 where we get to see journalists before they make it big (hi, Lisa Ling).

Reviews are good, and it seems like a good political thriller.
So, I'll probably see it.
I will note that I haven't seen many Polanski films. Just Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby.

That's why I want to see it, it's clearly a story about Tony Blair and nobody as yet has the bollocks to make a film about Bush being accused of war crimes, so Blair is as good as at the moment.
What is fascinating is that I've seen the trailer half a dozen times in several variations, as I go to the movies every Friday, and haven't seen Polanski's name once. As much as I'm against what Polanski did, and have said so frequently on this forum, I'll go and see this film, as opposed to say the lead singer of Skrewdriver (who sung only Nazi songs, and whose work could be criticised for being harmful), this is not a film advocating paedophilia. Its a tough choice for some but I'm sure many who are now boycotting Polanski managed to watch one of hi films over the last 30 years or so.
In short; I'd have issues if it was anything pushing a dodgy message relating to his crimes, which this film isn't. So I'll see the film & hope it's good, as well as hoping that Ewan McGregor has stopped making utter shite as he has done for the past six or seven years.
