Which one of you fantastic East Coast 'Boarders would be willing to grab me a shirt?

Oh yeah, Mike is a special guest and the show shirt features the cover art from Goon #7.

I saw Mike at SDCC back in the mid 90's and that's when I bought the skull illo from him, for a fantastic price, that Gary and Morna now own. It will be nice to see firnds Chris Golden and Tom Sniegoski.

Boston really doesnt have much of convention, they're usually always very small and localized. Im guessing that since they are moving it to the new Westin Waterfront and putting together a solid line up that the intent is to try and at least compete with other east coast events.

You can buy tickets at the door with no problem.

Dunno why, but I only visit the Hellboy forums here every so often. Though looking through all my comics, I sure the hell have a lot of Hellboy and Mignola stuff to get signed. I wonder how much might be too much. I'm very tempted to bring that awesome Batman Black and White statue, but it's reaaaaally fragile looking even considering I'd have it in the Styrofoam box. Lord knows I'm gonna need to bring a rolling suitcase to fit all my books for all the different artists. Boston's really hitting the big time this year.

Boston Style
03-12-2010, 05:45 AM
This will be a pretty small event if past events are any indication, so getting stuff signed shouldnt be an issue. When Mike was here last time, I showed up with 5 or 6 items for him to sign and he was totally cool about it.

The Xenos
03-14-2010, 04:35 PM
So 50 or 60 shouldn't be a problem? :p

Actually, I don't know if we can judge on past events. The con has new digs and a larger line up of bigger names than ever before. I hope it keeps the same casual tone and the lines aren't too bad.

I might bring the Batman Black and White statue. The Tim Sale one wasn't quite as fragile, but I brought that in the box and packaging last Boston con and it worked out well. Though this time I may just need a bigger bag to carry stuff around. Plus while there's no way in hell I'm getting a Lobster costume done in time as I hoped when i first heard Mignola announced, I do have a simple one based on a Templesmith character.

gdeo
03-14-2010, 04:57 PM
50-60 does seem like a lot....anything more than 5 at a time would be okay,i think.
consider the folks behind you..if you need more stuff signed ,just get back in line....this is all dependant on how big of a crowd there is.

The Xenos
03-15-2010, 12:20 AM
Oh yeah, definitely exaggerating. Though I have noticed some people with giant stacks getting signed.

Of course then there's the whole sketch issue. I guess every artist is different and has their own set of ground rules. When I was in line for Sale last year I didn't even expect even a quick sketch, but the guy in front of me asked and got one, so I did too. Of course he charged for anything longer than a quick sketch. He actually used an hour glass to time the longer ones.

Just got back from Day 1 of the Con, and some advice for anyone going on Sunday. If you're going, go early.

The crowds were exponetially larger than what I had seen last year, and when I left at 2pm, the staff were restricting access to the floor due to the size of the audience. The line at that point was longer than when I first arrived. It seems that all the advertising and the top notch talent paid off...although perhaps the venue wasn't big enough.

Once inside lines to see Mike, Eric Powell, Christopher Golden were all very manageable, and I was happy to get my copies of the library editions signed as well as pick up a sketchbook and 'the Nesting'.

Some mention was also made to a new novel collaboration between Golden and Mignola which will be something different than Baltimore. So I'll certainly be looking forward to that!

Paul and I got back from the Boston Comic Con about an hour ago. Paul stood in the cold, cold, cold line outside for 2 hours while I stayed inside the lobby all nice and warm! What a guy! That's why I love him! I brought my glass Amazing Screw-On Head that Gary Bolt made me for one of the first Hellboy Exchanges to show Mike.

When we finally got in, we headed for Mike's table. We bought "Nesting" for him to sign. He met us with pleasantness, and I explained who I was (we had met in L.A. at the first Hellboy movie press showing). Then I showed him Amazing.

He was SO excited to see it!! He said "Sh!t! That is FANTASTIC!!" I asked for a picture and I took the picture with Mike holding Amazing. I don't have my download cable with me now but I will next week and I'll post it. It was so cool!

great panel Q and A with Mike today. As usual Mike is totally laid back and forthcoming. The great news is that he said after the current HB arc concludes with Duncan he'll back on story and art duties with HB. He went into the "background" of Screw On Head which was kinda cool, and Im now officially VERY excited for the collected edition coming out in the fall.

All in all a much better event than years past. I have to admit Im glad I went today and not yesterday, it sounds like it was total clusterf*** between the hotel and the organizers which is created the lines.

ps, Nesting looks cool, but don't get too excited about the amount of MM artwork, its minimal at best.

Somehow I missed the news about the Screw on Head collection before. So hearing that was pretty cool to me. Dunno what was said before. I find it interesting that part of Mike's reluctance to making more Screw on Head is how happy he was with how perfect he nailed it and is worried about adding to it might spoil how perfect it came out. A number of things in the Q&A I'd read before, yet still nice to hear, and some were new. Very cool panel.

Today was definetely the day to go. We walked in around noon, bought our tickets, didn't wait in any lines and it was a great show. I stopped by and saw my friend Chris Golden, we talked for a while and I picked up a copy of Nesting. 4-5 illos throughout by Mike and both Chris and Mike were selling the book. Mike had a line of 3-4 people and I got to have him sign my Baltimore book with a little skull illo and some other books. I showed him my Guy Davis pages from Out of Reach and he signed the Guy Davis double page spread from BPRD: Black Goddess, pgs 2-3. He even through a little '(in awe)'. He was jazzed in seeing the spread. I also got to chat with Craig Rousseau who was in envy of my HellBoard shirt and I picked up his new sketchbook and a nifty Johann Krauss sketch. Besides that, graphic novels for half price was all the craze. There were a couple original art dealers but one guy had a lot of stuff I wasn't in love with and the other dealer had no prices marked so I moved on. Lunch in the pricey Irish pub and then home. My daughter had a good time and bought one of Chris' young teen zombie books. I'll make sure she writes up a proper book report on it.

Cheers,
MArk

Gary, thank YOU for sending me such an awesome gift!! I am still amazed that it is mine. I was so happy to have had the chance to show it off to Mike. He was *very* impressed with it!

Wow! Look at the size of that gun. You seem not a bit intimidated.

Haha! That's the second time I had my pic taken with that particular Boba Fett. He was at Framingham last year. Now I'll just have to get my picture taken with him everytime I see him! LOL I love Boba because he was a particular favorite of my son when he was little -- I am nostalgic that way.

Thanks for the kind words, Kees. :)

It's the only one I ever made.

Mr. Bolt that Amazing-Glass-Screw-on-Head is a work of sheer genius. Kudos! And to echo jimm, when will there be more:wink:.

You know you're going to be asked for more, or at least you've got to make Mike one.

Hmmm, Gary (Bolt), seems like in this case 'knowing might be less than half the battle'?!

And in fairness, I feel these people might have a point .
Where would society be without wine-stoppers?

(Gahhh, emo-tic-overload... zzzt >.< )

It's very cool, Gary! I do agree with Christine though, that this or something like it would make great wine stoppers. Perhaps as a series; with the ASOH characters, BPRD, and of course Hellboy. Not sure about licensing and such for these types of things, but I'd certainly buy a set if they ever showed up for sale somewhere.

I'm enjoying the appreciation for the glass head I made, but...

The glass Screw-On Head I gave Andrea was a fun piece I made for a Christmas gift exchange and is the only one ever made. I don't blow glass anymore so it will remain one-of-a-kind. A line of Hellboy/BPRD themed bottle stoppers is not in the works.
