...a day devoted to love, fondness, and lust is STILL A DAMN GOOD DAY!
Hope you all have someone out there to love on ya today. If you do, be good to them and let them know you appreciate them.
If you don't, bert's available!

I think Nick would be upset by that! (Unless it were Larry Dixon or Pip -- or at Dragon*con -- I have "buys" for those situaltions if the opportunity ever appears!)
(looks over at the HUGE heard full of chocolate he gave me this morning - way to support my diet efforts, sweetie!).
But I echo your sentiments: Happy Valentines Day everyone!

So I would like to remind everyone that Valentine's day is just a Christian of a perfectly good pagan festival involving blood, fucking, and werewolves. Happy Horny Werewolf Day everyone.

That is a great outlook. I hate to hear my friends say that because they are single or whatever, that they are all anti-valentine. I always offer to be their Valentine. I don't see why it is all for couples anyway. I always took it as a time to share love with the good people in my life.

I don't get the rage at manufactured days, as what the day means is important. Look at Christmas. Most scholars think if such a man existed he was born in the September and the actual holiday was based on a well known pagan holiday that existed in Europe long before little Yeshua was born, but that doesn't make the holiday any less joyous and sacred to those that choose to celebrate it.

Reminds of a scene from Aldous Huxley's Island where the protagonist is taking a tour through the peaceful paradise of Pala and is brought to a field where he sees carved scarecrows dressed in the finest clothing and made to look like known religious figures. The children would be put in charge of the things and pull a string that would make them dance. When the protagonist asked about the purpose of this he was told it was remind people that they make their own gods.
And really that's just want the whole of human culture is about, making our own traditions, stories, etc. to summarize what's important.

Invariably, I have more fun on Valentine's Day when I'm alone than when I'm in a relationship. When I'm not with anyone, usually I get together with my lame, lonely friends and we hang out and just have lots of fun.
When I'm in a relationship, it seems like there's all this pressure to really make the day special (as defined by really narrow criteria, of course, that usually entails buying expensive red shit) and I often find myself competing with other boyfriends. So I hate to be cliche, but I'm in the "Hate It" column.

I hate Valentines Day
I hate it's queer marks
I hate the " I love you "
And chocolate harts.
I hate Valentines Day
The day that's all cheer
I hate it the most
Out of all the years.
For Valentines Day,
I am something of a shrew
For I sit in my house
With nothing to do.
I sit
And I stir
and gibber and spit
For when it is love, I've have called it quits.
So take your valentines day
My fine feathered friend
And shove your chocolate hearts
Right up your rear end
For Valentines day,
It's easy to see
That no one around
To ever love me.

You mean I wasted the day looking at porn and eating candy when I could have had Bert?
Damn :frown:
In any case I hate this Holiday, the candy only serves to remind me I have a dental cleaning next week. And I'm scared to death to go.
Now I'm depressed, I think I'll fill the void by blowing up stuff in Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Valentine's Day is manufactured and I think you should show love any day despite the calender date, but I have nothing against people who dig it. It inspired some cool visuals/lyrics from my favorite band, Marilyn Manson so at least I have that.
Valentine's is my least favorite day of the year. A day dedicated to reminding me I'm alone.
Same here, it's not my all time least favorite day but it is one of my least favorite days. You get used to being alone though, after that the thought of being with someone is awkward and out of the "comfort zone".
Damnit, is it April yet? I generally dislike the months of November though February.

Sorry, but I think the holiday is a superficial and a waste of time. Going out an spending time with your special someone should be a loving and personalized event, not a public commercialized national holiday. Last year I went out with a girl I was seeing and it wasn't too great. Didn't help that it was a vacation weekend and the aquarium we wanted to go to was jammed with kids and their parents. Screw arranging your dates based on a public holiday. It's much more romantic and real to make your own special days out.

My bride and I got engaged during the first weekend of February, 1985, so this marks our 25th Valentine's Day.
Valentine's Day has been something of a tradition at my house. Every year, I make a unique card or gift for her. It started with that first one. In 1985, I made her a special Valentine's card, 20" x 30" with a passage from a poem by Thomas Moore:
Believe me, if all those endearing young charms that I gaze on so fondly today were to change by tomorrow and flee from my arms, like fairy gifts fading away, thou would still be adored as this moment thou art. Let thy loveliness fade as it will and around the dear ruin each wish of my heart would entwine itself verdantly still.
The next year, I made a brick wall, 7 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It was actually a thin sheet of wood veneer covered with brick-pattern contact paper, then spray-painted all over with mushy graffiti. I tacked it against the outside door frame of our apartment so that when she opened the door to go to work in the morning, she would find herself walled in by her card.
In later years, I made a jigsaw puzzle, a web page, various illustrations, cartoons (Calvin & Hobbes, with Calvin asking Hobbes his opinion of a Valentine he'd written: "Roses are red, green leaves are green; you're not quite as bad as some girls I've seen"), and a few other clever items I will go ahead and brag about...
I made a Crackerjack box.
http://www.jimmacq.com/artwork/crackerjack.jpg
That's me in the sailor suit, with the dog we had then, Cherish. The prize inside the package was a pair of diamond earrings.
Another year, I made some custom candy wrappers with the names of the kids on them. A Hershey bar that said "Ashley" and Crunch bar renamed "Chris" and some "Bazooka Jim" gum. Assembled them into a simple basket arrangement. The gum included custom comic strips featuring my bride and myself. Tragically, I don't have those art files anymore.
I made a cereal box.
http://www.jimmacq.com/artwork/Box_front.jpg
I bought a couple of boxes of Lucky Charms, and spent about an hour separating and sorting until I ended up with a box containing only the cereal and the pink heart & red balloon marshmallows. I printed out box art (featuring a cartoon of my kids) which I spray-mounted around one of the boxes. The special prize inside the box was jewelry, of course.
Last year I made a coloring book.
http://www.jimmacq.com/artwork/kiss_BW.jpg
I took a bunch of photos and traced them in Photoshop, converting them to line art, set them up in pages and printed them on 11" x 17" sheets, then assembled them into a coloring book.
This year, I did a re-run. The original Valentine from 1985 is in really sad shape. Over time, the glass in the frame got broken and the card got pretty beaten-up. The markers I used faded, the board yellowed to a beige color, stuff got spilled on it while it was propped in a corner, and eventually it was something of a mess.
So I recreated it. I got a piece of art board the same size as the original, carefully traced the original art to the new board, and re-drew the whole thing. Then I framed it and presented it to my bride.
I think I do a pretty good job on this Valentine's thing, and Hallmark never gets a nickel from me.

Oh I'm not saying you can't. I just don't want to do it along with every other couple in America like some kinda school of fish or like a hundred of Pavlov's dogs answering to a bell. I don't like when people get herded by the powers that be, like Bill Hicks said (about test audiences), "As though we are all the same. As though we share the same taste.. As though.. As though.. As though.."
Rather sucks the romantic angle right out of it for me.
And yeah, it almost seems like it's the day couples flaunt it to all their single friends and strangers. And they do it with giant corporate support.

This. I was talking to my friend on Friday. He says "Oh, shoot I have to go get my wife a Valentine's Day gift or I'll be sleeping on the couch." For many that's what Valentine's day has become - a day where you have to do something you should be doing already because you WANT to and a day where it's not the thought that counts as much as how much you spent on the item. Utter crap.
