Is it worth getting the trades? I flipped through the beginning of the first one once and while the new writer didn't seem to have a handle on Abby at all, I was kinda intrigued by the idea of the second swamp thing.

Depends which 'post-Moore' Swamp Thing you mean...

There's trades collecting the Veitch run, which followed straight after Moore's run.
It's pretty good.

Then there's trades collecting a fairly recent run (which I personally, know nothing about).

And there were plenty of post-Veitch issues, and another series, by Brian Vaughn - before he was big - about the adventures of Tefe, Swamp Things daughter.

Rick Veitch's Swamp Thing run-- Regenesis, Spontaneous Generation, and Infernal Triangles-- absolutely pick up. The book retains the quality from Moore's run, and Veitch and Alcala turn in some fantastic art.

The other ST trades aren't worth it unless you are a fan of Enrique Breccia's art.

Yeah, It's Veitch's run I was asking about. Is the general consensus that it's good?

It is a excellent run, with some great stories and decent art, plus a really weird side trip into some stranger corners of the DC universe and a nice history lesson, although the final chapter was edited out of existence.

Veitch's run starts of very well. IMO it goes right downhill with the time travel arc, but that stuff's not in the trades yet so you're fine.

And avoid the Diggle/Dysart trades. They're rubbish

I only have a couple issues, but I quite like them.

I liked his run quite a bit. As others have noted, what comes after, not so much.

I always thought it was as good as Moore's. Alan Moore wrote that he liked it (in Amazing Heroes, there was a list of teh ten comics Moore enjoyed most).
Not sure what's keeping DC from publishing the last part, I guess they were negotiating about Veitch completing his story and gave up.

Back in the day, I actually enjoyed Nancy Collins' stuff. However, trying to reread it a couple of years ago, I couldn't keep up with it anymore.

I think Veitch started out strong but slowly unraveled as he went. The Time Travel plot was too similar to Moore's Space Odyssey for my taste. He still didn't deserve to get yanked in the manner he did, and certainly what came after was infinitely worse, but the shine was off for me by the time he left.

Get the Veitch stuff, it's great.
