View Full Version : The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards
So, what did everyone think? Didja watch? Good show? How about the winners? Agree, Disagree?

I was only able to catch parts of the show when I got home as I was working. But I loved Gaga's opening. I'll have to catch it on a rerun. But it seems odd the type of music covered. Not all categories are equal, I guess.

I saw parts of it; but will watch most performances on Youtube. Skipping past Jackson of course.

They never are.

They always have and always will be a joke.

Although I've never listened to Taylor Swift's albums, I have heard a few of her songs here and there. Most of it sounds like teenage mumbo jumbo, which is fine for her, it's obvious that's her target audience. What I find hard to believe is that her album is the best album of the year. How can that be possible? Or is this album actually really great??

Seemed fairly normal/expected to me.
Really liked Pink's performance.
Liked Kings of Leon's wins.
Great Michael Jackson tribute.
No major disagreements with any wins.

The Only Reason Why Taylor Swift got best Album of the year over Lady Gaga:

The Grammy's are a joke
They never are.
Yeah, I wonder why they claim to be sensitive to all music, yet, so much seems ignored at the shows.
They always have and always will be a joke.
Yeah, I've heard that more in the past than now, but I guess it's still relevant. It seems like they award those with tons of airplay on the radio, but I wonder how much pull the Grammy's have in that business, or if it's the other way around.
But seeing and reading about everyone's opinions about the show, music artists genuinely seem concerned about their awards and what the show does for music.
Are they still a joke, or relevant, in some way?

Had Taylor Swift not won Album of the Year, it would have been Beyonce. But yeah, the backlash because of the Kanye thing is still in affect.
Lady Gaga's less talented than both of them, imo.

Man, those are some stinky nominees. People who complain about the Oscars or the Emmys (and yeah, I am often one of those people) should check out these noms to put everything into perspective.

the Grammy's may as well be called "you're a popstar who has someone write your music for you, and you lip-synch on stage" awards.
Wow. . Taylor Swift *really* should not have duet with Stevie Nicks --
it really exposed her for how weak a singer she really is.
(not to take anything away from her songwriting skills. . but sheesh, she should have never let Stevie anywhere near her on stage)

Colbert peg it in the opening about being self congratulatory.
The main thing i took away is how much i want to see American Idiot when it comes to Broadway this Spring.
I am not a fan of Rap, and the last act did nothing to dissuade my opinion. I do understand why people like it, it's just for me, it's not music. Poetry ( most of the time bad, self reverential poetry) set to a beat, but not music.
The Jamie Fox thing was horrid, until Slash came out to do the November Rain riff.

The main problem with the Emmys is that they keep handing the awards to the same people every year.

Wow some people I like won. Bublé, Mraz, AC/DC, & Jeff Beck. Cool. Beasties & Nas got snubbed I see.

I don't watch this crap, but I find the Contemporary Jazz Album winner pretty interesting:
75 by Joe Zawinul & The Zawinul Syndicate.
Zawinul played with Miles Davis and led jazz group Weather Report, but he died a couple of years ago. I'm curious about this release.

Someone seems to make a joke like that every awards show, but I never see the point because of course it's self-congratulatory, it's an industry awards banquet. That's what they're for.
As for last night's show, I only a saw a little bit of it but Beyoncé looked great. It was one of those times I was happy to pay extra for HD.

I generally glance at the nominees in genres that I actually listen to to see if I've missed any music I might want to track down.
I can't imagine watching a telecast and sitting through that much noise.

The big joke is that it beat out some true COUNTRY albums at the CMAs.

Except for the pop/country/rock/rap categories, the rest of the music nominated was pretty awesome. The pop/country/rock/rap are all about sales while the others are still about the art.

There was a great country album that won. Except it won Best Contemporary Folk Album. Steve Earle's LP Townes.

Exactly my point.
I dunno, I'm still divided, I mean, on the local news, they reported how some local high school group won a grammy and another local band as well.
I mean, I think when people refer to the crap of the Grammies, they are referring to the general big hype media show and it's awards to the pop stars, but as a musical awards show, they seem to cover a LOT of bases in the musical world, and I'm happy about that.

While not a big fan of Pink, I thought her acrobat preformance was the best thing out of the whole show.
