Servers went up shortly before midnight PST. I've been playing it for a year, and in nine hours of play, I sure HOPE I'd be level 10 or better at this point. :p
First-timers will probably take longer than that, though.
Will post name once I've got it locked in -- FedEx is on its way to my house now with my copy. :D I just knew which server I'd be on because of coordinating with friends.

I'm playing on the Silver Hand RP server. My character is a level 10 dwarf hunter named Ringo Flinthammer.
CoH continues to be the exception to the rule for MMORPG launches -- there's been some problems with server overcrowding, particularly at night, and although Blizzard is hustling to put up more, skipping the first week or so of the game might be a good idea to allow them time to do so.
Having said that, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

I'm looking at this weekend, maybe.
So, any particular niche you guys care to get filled? (yes, that is IF I pass muster in the guild, I don't assume anything) I was looking at the hunter, because, y'know, guns, but I've always been the mage kinda guy. Which, when you think about it, is what the blaster is in CoH. And Dwarf Mages are kinda an exception in most RPGs.

I just bought it tonight after playing a bit last night over at a friend's house. There was some lag last night but things seem better today. Have had no major problems since I installed it and downloaded the patch file. I was afraid how it would be since I am on dial-up and my friend was on cable, but things seem to be rocking along now that I can play. The quests are fun and keep the game interesting. I have only played for a coupl eof hours and am already a level 5 Tauren warrior. So far no complaints with the game. Good fun!

After checking out some reviews of both this and Everquest 2, I think that I'm going to go with WOW. It looks a bit better suited to my play. Well actually I want to check out Guild Wars when it comes out as well too. The free online play is just to inticing to pass up.
How much a month does WOW run a month?

It has a sliding scale, like CoH, based on how far in advance you pay. It gets down to $13 or so, as I recall.

Dwarf mages were sadly removed late in beta. But dwarf hunters bring a lot of the same fun.
We're looking for coolness in new members. We're always low on the cool. :D

Sigerson and I are being sorely tempted, because it keeps looking better and better in some ways. But I do think we'll still wait until Guild Wars comes out to decide.
Since World of Warcraft is more interestingly structured, but Guild Wars has the graphics I prefer, and is free.

WOW got a whooping 9.5 of 10 at Gamespot O_O
Now, if it would only cost a moderate amount per month... (sorry, I aint paying 13-15 bucks just to play a game. For that money I can buy games that are only a year old...)

That's true.
Do you buy a new one year old game a month, though?
A lot of people find they don't go to movies "just because" when there's a good MMORPG available to them. And that's a net savings.
In any case, if you're ambivalent about the fee (or worse), take a month or two and see what Blizzard provides for the service. If they do as much as City of Heroes has done (and they've promised), I'd say it's well worth it.
But, again, I don't think that MMORPGs are for everyone, because of this very issue. My wife and I, though, I know save quite a bit by playing.

Guild Wars is free, of course, because the network is just peer-to-peer matching, and the game is run off end users' computers, sort of like Battle.net games.
Personally, I hope Guild Wars is a big success, so that other MMORPGs go down that road instead. I strongly believe CoH would be a vastly better game without hundreds of superheroes running around, and just being able to meet up with heroes in a "Hall of Justice" graphical chatroom area, and then running the game peer-to-peer. Hell, most of the game is instanced to begin with, so it wouldn't be a giant change, and it would eliminate the monthly fees. I could live with the CoH updates as small expansions issued every few months on CD.

My PC is pretty bad, so I have no problem buying and playing older games.
Freespace is 1999 and I still love it.
I recently played planescape and loved it.
No problem buying games 1-4 years old.
And I *love* mmorpgs. I play on an Ultima online freeshard.
Personally I too hope the Guild Wars idea works out.

Hey, I play "Dungeon Siege" and "Pirates! Gold" regularly myself. But the question isn't whether you COULD buy a new game monthly, it's whether you DO. Because otherwise, the monthly fee that could go to buying a new game a month isn't replacing that, it'll be replacing something else, like going to a movie that's kind of eh, but you have nothing else to do. ;)

I got WoW last friday and I've played a lot.
After a bumpy start, Joe gave me some good advice on the character and now I'm hooked. Level 12 paladin just starting to be able to smelt tin and bronze.
I just need some malachite, some light leather and I can make cool copper axes, swords and armor.
I also have a slew of characters on CoH. I know juggling 2 MMORPG's is quite a feat, to say the least, but I think I can put CoH on pause until the rest of the SG catches up on my main.

CoH is the most casual MMORPG ever. WoW being #2 still is quite a bit less casual.

Huh.... I've been feeling pretty relaxed in this game compared to say, FFXI. I love it because it's not quite so convoluted as FFXI but not as simplistic as Ragnarok Online. (That's the simplest game around!)

I've never played an MMORPG before. But I'm seriously considering getting World of Warcraft. I've got a few friends that are playing it, so there would be people I could team up with, so that's good.
My only similar experience with games like this is Diablo II. I never really got into the Battle.net play, but I loved the single player. Went through once as a spear-wielding amazon and then again as an axe-wielding barbarian.
Any comments on whether or not I should go for it? If I do get it, it would most likely be some time after Christmas, since I've already got some games occupying my time now, and I will probably get one or two new ones as presents which will need to be beaten immediately.

muimi, Guapo's point of reference is CoH. Given that there are no secondary skills in CoH (well, no character skills at all, aside from whatever skills the player has), no way to advance a character other than combat and completing the maximum-three-at-a-time missions, WoW is vastly more complex. I agree, though, that it's far less complex/time-intensive than most MMORPGs. I think it shares an important virtue with CoH: You can accomplish SOMETHING in 30 minutes, when 30 minutes is all you have. After the first few levels in EQ1, it takes 30 minutes just to get somewhere to do something, and that's with all the (IMO) ridiculous shortcuts in distance they later made.
Shade, WoW is a lot more detailed than Diablo II, and it has a user fee (it's run serverside, not clientside, so there's big bandwidth and hardware costs, as well as manpower costs). Having said that, especially if you have friends playing it that you can play with (Guapo and I still haven't been online at the same time for more than a few minutes, thanks to timezone and workday differences), I think you'll like it. The best way to know is if one of your friends got the Collector's Edition of the game. If so, they have a 10 day free pass they can let you play on.

Yeah, Cosmos is super-popular. I don't use it any more myself, but you're hardly the only person jonesing when it's not available.
Traditionally, mods break every time an MMORPG is patched, but Blizzard has announced that next patch will make the game much more mod-friendly, giving you the option to leave mods working (with the caveat that they might operate strangely if they aren't updated).

Heh. I found a way to provide myself with light leather. Not only is an element I need for my stuff, but also is a good thing to trade.
I created a warlock with skinning-leatherworking professions. She collects the leather and sends it to my paladin. Problem solved.
Oh, and the game is shaping up much better this week. I already got on drops a shadowgem, 2 malachites, 2 tigerseyes and 4, count em...4 bars of silver.
I may have to revise my unsubscribe policy...

Well I got the game friday and created a Night Elf Hunter. Right now I'm deciding if it's worth it to train in swords or just stick with daggers. I did pick up a nice two-handed sword but I doubt I'd train in two-handed since I think I'd like to dual-wield later.
Now if only they'd implement Bowcrafting/fletching.

Well we picked it up after stores finally got it in here (they had sold out everywhere).
And we're trying to decide what characters we want to play, since we will probably each have one Horde and one Alliance character if we can have that many.

Boy do I feel dumb. I went to Ironforge to sell some things and while there, I saw a Murloc Breastplate that looked good. So I went to bid on it for 6 silver but the game lagged for me and I accidently bought it for 66 silver(The buyout was 25 silver) So I just spent most of my money on a piece of armor. Ah well. When I get back from vacation I'll just go insane with the killing of critters
If anyone is on Stormwind, look up Lono, my 31 Orc Shaman.
This game is just colorful crack. I swore I wasn't going to play, but I gave the free trial (via my friend's collector's edition) a shot, and it pulled me so fast.
Now, I've convinced so many people to join in, I feel like a WoW missionary.
It must be the only PC game I've ever seen Sorority girls play...heh

Ah, don't worry. With all the drops you get, you'll be sitting on goldcoins in no time. Just last week I got a drop of a goblin mallet basher that I sold for 15 silver at a vendor (soulbound, so I couldn't auction it) and then I got another weapon that I could auction at 20 silver.

Yeah. I Feel better since at the same time I put up two auctions for swords that made me about 40 silver. Yay! I kept hearing how bad it was to travel to IronForge from Elf country but I didn't have any trouble. My pet died a few times but I didn't. All is well again. Oh, and whenever you see a treasure chest, open it. At low levels the rewards are good, but at higher ones? I've gotten 4 silver bars of one, blue colored bracelets from another and even 2-3 silver coins.
Another good source of cash is spider silk. About 6 silver per strand at a regular vendor. Right now I got 5 gold coins, bags full of swag and quests that will give me from 13 to 40 silver coins upon completion.
It's XP and gold city, baby!

Characters in play (alternate days)
Mine:
Alisia; Gnome Rogue; Mining and Engineering
Rosaria; Tauren Shaman; Skinning and Leatherworking
Sigerson's:
Tygranaric; Night Elf Druid; Herbalism and Alchemy
Hahen; Undead Warlock; Tailoring and Enchanting
I'm barely getting any money though...
I'm just generally scraping together with around 10 s at any one time. This may be that my characters are only level 17, but it really is the trades that are keeping them with any money to level up at all. Mining gives my Gnome the most money, but even she is tight on funds with her skills being 18s at the current level. Though I'm not as bad off as Sigerson's character, whom I've had to send money to twice.

You think that's bad.
I just hit level 44 last night on my Pally and she's just ate through 10g on 4-5 skills.
Skills get really money intensive once you start getting closer to level 30(probably around 26) that I've had to just stop getting some skills that I don't usually use.
Then there's the whole mount thing at level 40 thats going to cost you anywhere from 70-100g.
So alot of people that I've talked to played with start saving before they hit 40, like around level 35 or so.
But the easiest/best way to get cash is to get awhole bunch of your buddies together and do instance runs. The monsters in instances usually drop 5X more cash than other mobs their level.
The only other way is to create a resource gatherer and have them seed your main characters with materials so that you can grind out alot of pieces at once and then vendor them or try to auction them.
However on my server the low end items tend to not move as much now, so you might be better off vending them.

Finally got my druid up to lvl 20 yesterday, although I just barely had enough time to buy my spells before logging off. I really need to find something to do with all my money. When I was lvl 19 I was sitting on 3.5 Gold and now I've got 2.7 or so. Not sure if I should keep saving or look for a better weapon or something. 'cuz my staff sucks.

Update:
I got my Paladin to level 40, got my warhorse and my Plate proficiency.
Fifty gold coins, lots of green-blue items, every bag a 12 slot one.
A kind level 50 helped up clear the very red Captains Chest and the whole Bloodsail Buccaneers series.
I tried to do Uldaman but our 4 man group had one of the paladins leave after the first group wipe. We tried some more, but we got wiped again. Finally, 2 more joined us but we only reached the enchanter artisan and left.
So I still have to save those dwarves and do the Indiana Jones type quest before it's grey to me.

Man I made a new post about people playing WOW and no one answered...duh it's because everyone was here.
Yeah I got the game last Friday after reading through why the Gamespot staff said it was the game of the year. It's my first MMORPG and it's greatness. It's just fun and there is so much do to and I have yet to lvl that high. I'm a Lvl 10 Night Elf Druid on Eonar Realm.
I think that I'm going to start another character that is part of the Horde to work on as well.
The only problems I'm having is there isn't enough time for me to get my fill and the fact that I'm dead at work b/c I'm up until 3 in the morning playing it the night before....haha.

Ah, the play until the early hours of morrow...aye...the true definition of a gamer.
Today I was playing around with my level 6 mage when 4 high level Horde players went on an NPC murder spree. Of course we all rose to the challenge, but our damage output was pretty low against a level 60 troll hunter, a level 60 undead, a level 27 troll hunter and maybe a level 40 orc.
Still, timely appearances by the Goldshire guards and sheer numbers of lowbie players killed them time and time again. I gave the killing blow to the ailing level 60 with a 19 damage frostbolt.
Once I had enough deaths of my mage, I switched to my Paladin and I gryphoned from Booty Bay to Goldshire. By the time me and my guildies arrived the horde had hearthstoned away.
They left behind the level 27 troll hunter and he was challenged to a duel by an even level paladin guildy. The battle was hard fought, but our teammate prevailed against the hunter and his crockolisk pet.

Not today. They will be offline for 16 hours so they can do some much needed maintenance.
Last night ad 2:00 am we were fighting Mai 'Zoth. We had 6...count 'em...six disconnections as we were either engaging him (a level 47 elite) or his 2 3 companions (level 44 and 45 Lord and Shaman).
Of course we died a lot and whatever progress we achieved was erased because they respawned. Finally, around 3 am we slew Mai 'Zoth but the repops killed us again. We managed to get the bauble he was hoarding by doing a rezz next to him, looting him mighty fast and dying immediately afterwards. The whole room had respawned and there were 7 ogres right on top of us.
Annoying.

Ouch!
I got stuck the other day with a group who just didn't seem to realize they were getting us killed... We were trying to kill Tharil'zun and I could kill the adds in one or two goes by myself. But this was only because my aggro was low enough I didn't pull Tharil'zun and his group. I told them to wait and that I'd be ok, since they were all 6 levels lower than me and while they could take Tharil'zun, they couldn't do it with 7 guys attacking them. So, whenever they saw me engage in combat they would start attacking randomly. No plan, nothing. The paladin wouldn't heal. The warrior wouldn't stun. The Warlock didn't have her companion fight. But the Hunter would send his in also randomly.
After getting all my armor broken utterly by something that shouldn't have been that painful I abandoned them. I feel badly about doing that. But on some levels I think it had been justified at that point. I mean when I left they were about to go try again with broken armor...

Ouch. Those teams really suck. Kinda hard to imagine they made it that far and still have no clue on how to play.
Incidentally, I also had to fix my armor and gear and the damages tallyed up to 1 gold for all my equiped items. And for my non equiped, I clicked on the "Fix item" button and, instead of left clicking to fix, I right clicked to sell. I sold 3 pieces of armor and weapons before I realized what I had done. I managed to recover the Rock Pulverizer, but the Collection Plate shield and one other weapon are gone.

What is Aggro? I know that it has something to do with how many enemies target you during an engagement, but what does it really mean?
The players guide (bought it because of the maps and Penny Arcade comics) says that its the distance from which an enemy will engage you. It is larger as the number of levels between you and the monster increases. So that if you are level 1 and run into a level 20 but you're next to a level 19 it will attack you instead of the 19 first. Then it will start attacking whoever is doing it the most damage once engaged.
So when I was level 28 and the other players were level 22, and we ran into Tharil'zun who was level 24, guess who he went for first? Then I had to start engaging to help them get their attacks going, and then I'd be killed once I was either netted or paralyzed by magic...

Oww...
I hope I never do that with my pretty pretty Prison Shiv.
Its full of shanky goodness.

So out of curiosity, which are your favorite boss fights so far?
Two of my guildmates and two pick-ups actually completed Uldaman yesturday afternoon, and I was too busy running around taking care of adds to really see what it was like.
But so far my favorite has to be the boss at the end of the Scarlet Monestary.

I liked the undead in the secret room of the Scarlet Monastery.
But my favorite still remains Van Cleef. From Mr. Smite to Van Cleef himself, the voices and the taunts were awesome.

I've not done the Scarlet Monastery yet.
Van Cleef is my favourite. Even though it took me 3 times to finish it.
The first time inside was so much fun. None of us knew where we were going or what we were doing. But it was just incredibly fun to have the whole thing open up before us.

Well I can give a Suggestion if you're on the Alliance side for the Scarlet Monestary.
Head to Desolace first, best around early 30's as there is a quest at Nigel's Point (Northern Part of the Map) that starts off the SM quests, the Rewards are quite awesome.
Also the boss drops in that area will also last you till the mid 40's.

"I think the reason so many people are open to hearing about Jesus in the World of Warcraft is because the majority of people who play the game are lonely kids who don't have any friends.
You lonely kids, you ;)
I doubt any of them play sports so you can pretty much guess that there are lots of gay boys and fat little pale-faced Wiccan girls on the servers who hate themselves and escape into virtual characters so they don't have to deal with their pathetic lives.
Ah, see, there you go! Straight out of the mouth of a christian baptist, it seems you all are gay, fat, pale, wiccan girls, even you boys!
Most people who are mean, liberal, nasty, lonely, unsaved losers in real life choose to play the Horde (an evil race of characters in the World of Warcraft) and people and guilds who are conservative, Republican and pretty much easier to win to Jesus Christ with are found in the Alliance.
LOL god....
That thing is really funny!
Even more if you consider they mean it seriously!

I thought it was one of those horrible Jack Chick things at first, but if you look at the rest of the site, the entire thing is pretty obviously just a parody of Chick and his frothing cultists.
Still, I have heard people say this kind of stuff, so it's not without precedent. It's amazing that what some people consider so absurd as to be unbelievable and funny... others take as truth.
People like that make me ashamed to say that I'm a Christian sometimes. Guilt by assocation.

Just wondering, how many of us are on the Silver Hand (when its up and everything)?
Sigerson and I are, Joe is, and I think Guapo is.
It is funny that I don't think that we've run into each other at all either. Though this might be because of level disparity in some cases.

Oh, I'd say it's definitely the disaparity. I'm a 21, and all the guys I joined SH for are so far above me that.... well, nevermind.
And the fact that I haven't been able to get online and stay there for more than 30 minutes at a time in the past week. Oh yeah, like I'm gonna wait on a 75 minute queue to play 30 minutes... sheyeah, right...
I'm paid up for the 6 months past the free month, but . . .
Truth be told, I created a couple of horde guys over on the Bleeding Hollow PvP server, which I can actually log on to (!) and I'm sort of growing attached to them. I admit it, I'm a warrior type of guy down deep. That and the fact that I still go back to CoH pretty often.

The server problems are unbelievably annoying. Last night I wanted 4 hours of solid gaming and instead I got 30 minutes of travelling to turn in quests before I fell asleep on the keyboard.
Even CoH was a disappointment. I spend half an hour looking for a mission door in Perez Park and had to look up the maps again so I could play.
Hopefuly the problems are solved.
On Silver Hand I got Kyroson the paladin, at 43. Darlune, a human mage at 12, I think. And Adesana, a human warlock at 7.
I got a horde hunter on a PVP server, but I don't think I'll use him again...I didn't like the "hunt humans" missions.
I created another character, Garthal the dwarf priest, on Silver Moon and so far I like him. Maybe I'll switch back and forth with him.
Anyone here play the Alliance on Elune?

Gratz on doing so. I play a level 60 Priest on the EU Dragonmaw server and I'll occasionally go and bring groups of 3-4 Palladins into Scholo to help them get their epic mount. (I'm a nice guy like that.)
What was your party make up? I found that while a party of 3-4 Palladins can have a lot of trouble clearing the way up to Rattlegore's room, that many Pallies just wtfpwn all the Undead they have to fight at the end.
While losing a palladin for a Mage or Rogue may make the last fight harder, it makes getting there much easier.
Oh well either way gratz on your epic mount. (I just have to try and save 900 gold to get it.)
Still with any luck I should be getting my Benediction shortly.

You rule, man. Priests are invaluable for this quest.

First attempt we were, all 60's, a priest, a hunter, a rogue and two paladins. It took us a while to get to Rattlegore's room-and we wiped on the third wave.
Second attempt was right after that one. The paladin had to go and we gained another hunter. It was much faster getting to Rattlegore's -about half an hour faster- and we wiped on the fourth wave.
Third attempt was four days later, party was the same priest, two hunters, a druid and me. Fastest time getting to Rattlegore ever, but we wiped on the third wave -mobs killed me first, I could not DI the priest and the gates close when you initiate the encounter.
Fourth attempt, priest, hunter, rogue, mage and me. Couple of wipes on the dragonlings, couple of deaths on the risen constructs, but the experience of the previous attempts really helped us out. My judgments stunned them, but not enough to survive the first volley, so on the third wave we pulled 3, got 4 adds...priest shackled one, hunter's ice trap got 1, his pet offtanked 1 and we killed 3. We lost the rogue and the hunter, so I DI'd the priest and lost aggro. We rezzed, rebuffed and pulled the ghosts. Surprisingly, we got them in 1's and 2's and that -with the mage's AoE's, made all the difference. The priest shackled the Third wave Aspect while we regained mana and then we killed him.
This is the crucial part: Fourth wave spawns 3 ghosts. You have to engage them immediately and pull them to your corner. While you're killing them, the fourth ghost spawns, but does not add to you...not yet. So you can dispatch the first 3 and then vanquish the newly spawned ones one by one.
Shackle the Fourth Wave Aspect, regain mana, and then kill him to fight the Death Knight. I had saved a Mightstone -from a pally quest- and that gave me 400 attack power against undead, and the firepower put forth by the mage, hunter, pet and rogue was more than enough to vanquish the knight in mere seconds. No deaths on that fight, thanks to priest heals and her shadow protection buffs -I also had a couple of shadow prot. potions to help me out-.
I'd say 3-4 pallies are good to have, but it can be done with just 1 and a good crew. I had a very, very good crew: my guildmates from Sawed Off.
Oh well either way gratz on your epic mount. (I just have to try and save 900 gold to get it.)
I was saving up to do that, because the paladin mount needed a Pristine Black Diamond and those were around 500-900 gold on my server, but when a patch increased their drop rate it slashed their price by 99%.

This sounds totally frickin awesome. I want to play WoW.
Will it run on an Athlon 750? That's what I have. 384 megs of ram. ATI Radeon 7200 card. Is my compy too old to run it, even on minimum settings?

It'll run, I think. You'd do well to get more RAM to offset the lag you're gonna get, though.

Well when I've done it with many Palladins, we've had a lot of trouble on the waves of humanoids since we may only have one form of CC. We'd always try and take on the smallest groups of Scholomance humanoids focusing on the summoners first silencing and stunning them then trying to kill the others before they pull more. We'd die a lot of times but we'd make it through.
The undead would be simple to kill. The Dragon room, I'd mind control one of the handlers into AoEing as many dragonlings as were around her until they destroyed each other and we went in to kill the survivors.
As for the last part of the quest.
The key is to stay in the bottom right corner of the room and not leave there, and try to pull the group of ghosts over to you as few as possible. (Useually the ones beside the door first.)
After that it was simple. Each Palladin has an order ot use their Judgement in, and the ghosts go down fast.
The hard part of the fight that you must prepare for is the last wave of ghosts. The ones that shoot Shadow Bolts. Everyone needs to drink a potion of Greater Shadow Protection for that fight. It means you'll survive the inital volley long enough for the Pallies to Judge them and kill them all.
After that you keep shackling the last ghost until everyone's mana and health are high enough for the fight with the Dreadknight.
Still it's good to here that you got yours.
Shamans have to do the same quest to get their Epic Helm, and it's a million times harder for them, for a worse reward.
I was saving up to do that, because the paladin mount needed a Pristine Black Diamond and those were around 500-900 gold on my server, but when a patch increased their drop rate it slashed their price by 99%.
Ah yes, I remember when they went for stupid money. Now you can buy one on my server for between 15-30 Gold.
