Also, if you ever watched earlier seasons of Smallville, Pete was the black kid that was Clark's best friend (the show opted for not to make Pete a blonde white guy for some reason... maybe cause it would have made him look too much like the character Whitney on the show, I don't know).

Before this turns into yet another unsubstantiated myth, I should point out that most comic covers like these were used as shock value to get the reader to check out what was inside. Often times the actual story was either a villainous trick, a prank between friends (still a bit of dickery here, but Jimmy got himself in trouble enough times, you would too), part of the story taken out of context, or red kryptonite. They had a lot of "imaginary tales" back then, too.

Of course, that doesn't stop the covers from being funny as all hell. My favorite one for sheer "what the hell" factor is one of the ones I listed last page, where Superman is an ant-man stealing Lois to be his hive queen. In that case, it was red K turning him into an ant monster in the story, but it's still hilariously random as a cover.

You know, all kidding aside Superman really could be a dick sometimes. Mongul tricks him into getting Warworlds forbidden key, and when it's defender Martain Manhunter finds out about it he tries to nicely warn off Supes. And he gets ignored to hell! And when MM gets a bit more physical, instead of thinking "Well gosh, I guess whatever he's protecting is pretty important, plus I'm tresspassing here, so let's just leave or ask him what's up", nope. Supes pretty much tells him "Outta my way" and pounds him into the dirt.

Then not more then a few comics later, when Supes chasing down Supergirl so fast he almost breaks the barrior leading into heaven, Spectre gets in his way, and instead of asking why Supes picks a fight with him too! Hits him with his best shot enough to make a crator, and when that doesn't work tries running.. It's not till Spectre grows giant sized and manhandles him that Supes finally becomes reasonable.... to the lecture of Spectre asking why he didn't just ask for help in the first place.

So that's two instances of basically treating his friends with way less respect then they deserve.

I just noticed in The Great Darkness, we've got Timberwolf and Lightning Lads girl cheating together, while he's in a COMA, we've got something about Timber Wolf being pissed at Chemilean (sp?) Kid for dragging him and a bunch of others on a suicide mission, presumably without their permission...

I always thought Wildfire was the dick, but he's just got attitude. Least he's a straight shooter..

Ok, this is a humorous pardoy story based on the "Superman is a Dick" website. Please read and review it.

Prologue

Superman is an alluding figure. He lives a life so public and yet so very private. How quickly the people of the world have been to let this man enter there hearts, and yet he is no man. He is a Kryptonian. An alien. He is unlike anybody on Earth. From a society whose morals are nothing like ours. Whose very DNA is nothing like ours. How can a man, isolated from anybody like him, live so long on a strange home, impressed from the time he was adopted by two simpleton farmers about morals, and about how he must protect the world, without snapping. He holds more power than anyone, holds knowledge unknown to anyone else. He is a God among ants. And everyday he lives, he hides his dark secrets, is sick secret life, where his greatest amusement is in torturing those around him. Did anybody see the episode of JLU last night because Superman was being such a dick in that. He was OBVIOUSLY Jealous of Captain Marvel's fame so he starts bashing him because the newspaper said he endorses Lex Luthor.

Then Supes thinks Lex planted a bomb underground this new city so he pigheadedly wants to destroy it before anything else happens. Captain Marvel tries to cool things down but Supes fights Marvel and the city starts getting destroyed.

So he embarressess himself, lowers the credibility of the league, makes a member quit, and gives Luthor another edge. Sure it was a setup but Supes should have figured that out.

Jeez What a dick. :D

I heard comics during this time sold so well, a title would be cancel if it only sold 70,000 issues (a hit today). And yet, comics now are better than those back then. Were comic book readers that stupid back then.

No they just enjoyed comics that were fun and not dark and depressing. They (we) enjoyed heroes who we were not morally superior too. No Identity Crisis or Infinite Crisis Drek. The mistaken Idea that they're better now and thus being stuck in a death spiral of not getting what heroes are produces a double whammy with bad distribution to keep numbers down. Several generations of my family would buy dozens of comics per month if iconic characters like Superman and Captain America weren't basically unreadable. John Byrne and Gail Simone at least seem to be getting Superman so far. Rucka and Azzarello should never be allowed near a real hero again in my enraged opimion. Rant from old guy ended. :evilangry

Funny, yes. Ridiculous and stupid, no. Certainly not pre-Crisis level crap.

Distributing only to comic book stores only was indeed a bad idea. Imagine what would happen if comics were sold at drug stores and dollar stores. Though, I've been seeing a few DC titles at Movie Gallery, so maybe they're learning their lesson. Not to mention the "let's make a major change to the comic only to hit the reset button" stories.

Well using my detective skills, I figure it's from a comic called "The Day Superman Stopped Caring" (or something of that sort) that I saw in this "Superman is a dick" madness. Why? Probably some random Pre-Crisis plot device like Red Kryptonite or aliens messing around with humanity by screwing with Superman's head. It's probably something like that.

Turned out an alien had "treated" all of his civvies with some sort of red-sun radiation, so that if he wore any article of Clark Kent's clothing (even if it were just a sock), his powers were switched off.

During this sequence he began to develop a vestigal personality as Clark, started standing up for himself instead of always behaving like a coward, even started having a relationship with Lois for the first time (there was even a panel that strongly hinted Lois had spent the night with Clark).
In fact, he was having such a good time being a "normal" man, that he started wondering if there was really a need for Superman at all--which led to the dream sequence shown here.

Which doesn't stop it from being funny in retrospect...

True, and let's face it 90%+ of these examples are going to be elsewheres, imaginary stories, dream sequences or taken completely out of context. Except for Golden Age Supes the character has been a boy scout.
