For example, I like the band Train just fine.
Nice ballads, decent musicians, I guess.....
A friend has a concert DVD of theirs and we were watching it when BAM!, they did the Led Zep tune Ramble On.
And it was amazingly good! I couldn't believe how well they pulled it off. And being a huge Led Zep fan, this means I now see train as much better musicians than I did before.

When I saw Jane's Addiction in '91, I wasn't expecting much. I liked their music, but I just assumed that stuff was being done in the recording studio to make them sound good. But they were really good live on stage. Even better, Perry Farrell sometimes said some bizarre and very funny things in between songs.
I was really impressed with My Chemical Romance on The Black Parade Tour. I didn't actually see them live (boy I wish I did) but I watched The Black Parade is Dead! DVD and loved it. This is one of the best bands to see live.

wow.. HATE (with a passion) Janes Addiction live. . saw them ONCE (touring w/ Faith No More), and there was sooooo much reverb on Perry's mike, the sound was audio mud.
vowed never to spend money on seeing them live again
(but have all the CDs).

Yikes, you must have caught one of their rare bad shows. Every time I saw them, they are among the best concerts I have ever seen. But it wasn't quite a surprise, their musicianship shines through on CD, too.
One for me is Razorlight. I went into it expecting pretty rote CD versions of their songs, and wow do they electrify. Johnny Borrell is definitely one of the best front men I have ever seen.
