Well, I'm somewhat of more mainstream comics fan, but I saw the films. I was thinking of getting this

That's one heck of a first step! I say go for it. The comics are better than the films (They inspired them, after all.) and both the art and the writing are excellent.
Hi DetectiveDupin,
I think the hardcover versions are a brilliant place to start, if you can afford it. There are the regular TPB's, which is what I have at the moment, and they're great as well.
The books are different from the movies though, as Gary Bolt had pointed out. I came to Hellboy because of the movies and I'm a full blown fan of the books now. I still really like the movies, but it's the books that I'm engrossed in.
There are spin offs and the world expands but it's written in such a way that if you want to learn more about the BPRD, for example, you can. But it's not needed to enjoy the Hellboy books or vice versa. If you end up enjoying the Hellboy books I figure, like the rest of us, (most of us at least) you'll be interested in finding out more. It's a pretty rich world.
Enjoy!

great way to start. I'd go thru Amazon though, they're cheaper.

Usually the source material from any media form is always much better.

Personally, I would start with Hellboy: Volume 7. Some would argue it's the most essential.

yeah but del toro though awesome changed a ton and picked elements here and there to make a movie fit for everyone.
the comics are incredible they way they are though. always start with the first issue and go on, only way to get the whole hellboy mythology because everything connects.
then if you want you could branch off to BPRD which has its own history and stuff though a lot shorter and nowhere as expansive.(HB and bprd do not tie together to much yet so you dont need to worry about what order to read)
unlike marvel and dc its not impossible to read from the begining here.
you could download torrentz to get caught up and then buy the current one, (i downloaded them then bought them all)
or ebay also has tons of hellboy lots for cheap.

No Torrents. Buy... Now... Find the money somewhere, and buy.

That's how I got started on the Hellboy universe.
Today I can proudly say that I'm a full-time fan of all of the Hellboy related books that come out:biggrin:

Torrents are a touchy issue, to say the very least.
I've downloaded the entire Hellboy/BPRD collection, but I also have all of the single issues, trades, and HB library editions. I guess I'm a geek in that way.
To be honest, there are times that I am so completely broke that I'm unable to purchase much of anything, yet alone comics. So I'll download to keep up to speed and then immediately rush to my lcs to pick up everything I've missed in print. I don't feel guilty about this, but I do think that simply downloading and not supporting the artist/publisher is criminal. This is the only way my interest in comics has been able to continue. If it wasn't for Dark Horse, I wouldn't be reading comics at all and I'm a big fan of supporting what you love.
Sorry to take this off subject, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents on this particular issue.

The perfect start.
I actually have been strongly considering those even though I already have all the smaller books...Mignola's art enlarged is just so worth it.
Usually when I start on something like this (which means...something awesome) I'll pick up something random...a lot of people get stuck up with continuity but the best books have a great issue every issue...like Goon and Hellboy...which was a great teamup and starter book for either...
