Gelaskins look like cheap pieces of crap. And if you drop your computer or phone enough to "use" one then your stuff is probably broken anyway.

I thought "great art" and:
them robed people oughta know better in this weather. Then again maybe it suits them, like big old pearly strings, or hair. Eyeballs. Or none of that.
The shady lord I seem to recognize. If he'd be messing with Liz he better start eating his fingers.
And then there is Liz. Stunning. Looking girly yet uncommited to everplease the eyes of lame rockstars or actors or businessmen being about their hidden agendas. Girly in a sense some people just seem to own, besides or transcending age. Like how even old or fullgrown men can appear boyish in stumbling 'through the land. Or babies like the Buddha. Girly as a sort of elegance and unshyness or 'endeavoring against any odds'.
Not that a person like Kate would seem unelegant. Yet Kate seems more reflective and - well - more shy I'd say. Where Kate would say: "and that's where it ends" I guess Liz would act louder: "no pickle with those fries, bub?"
Just what I thought.

I also enjoyed Witchfinder the most of the 3 recent series (Witchfinder/BPRD 1947/ Hellboy The Wild Hunt)
*** SPOILER WARNING ***
The good parts were the wonderful atmosphere of the late 1800's era i really liked the way the world was portrayed.
The fact that the "bad guys" were really the Heliopic brother hood of Ra and not the Hollow earth creature.
I really liked learning more about the secret history of the earth.
My only problem maybe was the final issue ended a little suddenly and wordy. But still i was left with a good feeling from the read.

So after rereading Witchfinder in its entirety in one sitting, I feel the need to completely change my tune on this one. Each issue, read on its own, as it came out with 30 days between installments, didn't seem to really hit me or even stay in my memory. But now...
This book is amazing and I can't wait to see the next mini or one shot. This world just keeps getting richer and richer with so many threads continuing to merge and expand the Mignolaverse. Great, great stuff!

thats 4 trades 1n 2010 already and we only got trade dates up till june!
Hellboy Vol 9 - Wild Hunt March 2010
Witchfinder In the Service of Angels April 2010
BPRD Vol 12 - War on Frogs, May 2010
Hellboy Vol 10 - Crooked Man, June 2010
BPRD Vol 13 - 1947 should see a release in August i would think
BPRD Vol 14 - King Of Fear would also fit in around November
that would leave Ectoplasmic man, Bride of hell and the Abe One shot as all thats left published/Scheduled yet to see Trade/Theoretical Trade.

Although i do not support the following idea, maybe dark horse could make a TPB called Hellboy One Shots and include those three in it ... possibly pad it up with an issue dedicated to Liz or Daimio or LoJo
I really dont like the idea though because it messes up my collection of TPB's
Its much simpler to have Hellboy volumes and BPRD volumes ... The Hellboy Junior, Weird Tales 1 & 2, Abe Sapien v1, LoJo v1 and Witchfinder v1 feel a bit out of place, im happy they are collected but my mind likes things organized into clear category's and neat piles and things are a bit out of place.

Im a bit bummed that we got witchfinder instead of another LJ trade. seemed like the pieces have been in place for more lobster johnson for awhile now but it looks like mike shifted to Witchfinder when he realised it was time to tell Edward Greys story. or at least begin to tell it.
Not That its a big issue really but it seemed like LJ was gonna be "ongoing" in the same way BPRD and Hellboy are, allways something on its way in one form or another but it just flatlined instead. oh well....... burning Hand cant be much further away.
looks like Abe will get a volume two trade in the near future as well, which i didnt even consider a possibility but With John doing a two parter Abe story it seem likely that well be getting a stream of smaller abe stories in schedule gaps. Good news cause Abes Hardcore.

we Hellboy/bprd fans are getting spoilt these days.
Jelio
01-21-2010, 10:33 AM
Right now there is only one series going on (BPRD King of Fear) so we arent spoiled just yet.
Last year there was a glut when BPRD 1947 & Witchfinder & Hellboy The Wild Hunt were all coming out 3 issues per month.
I personally think its great when we have multiple issues per month, however i think what happened last time was stupid. 2 comics would come out on 1 day and the 3rd would come out a week before, leaving a "black hole" of 2 weeks with no Mignola comics when during that month 3 were made. It should have been 3 weeks with each week a new comic and only 1 week off in the month. No reason in that situation to double up 2 releases on the same day.
Anyways going forward i feel there will be another good glut of Mignola comics to spoil us later in the year maybe spring time. Where multiple series are being released in the same month.

I was also going to say... while I have been loving the Abe books just fine, I'm hoping the next solo story will have something a bit more profound to it. "The Haunted Boy" was a good read (with fantastic art!), but at the same time, it felt a bit like a disconnected piece of (very good, mind you) fanfiction. Does that make sense?
The art for the two covers looks pretty cool to me. Seeing that drawing of Oannes/Dagon next to Abe on the second cover intrigues me.

Agreed. I'm an Abe fan too, but his books are all the same. It's just like how the Justice League justifies keeping Aquaman around. He's better than just diving down in some water to see what's going on. Maybe Abe works best as a sidekick.

It does to me.
I heavily enjoy(ed) "the Drowning", whereas "the Haunted Boy" was *okay*, both in art as in story I'd say.
I like Abe seeming hesitant and quiet and disconnected when compared to a more typical hero.
And I hope him to remain essentially non-loud or even timid-seeming for good.
I like to think some heroes are the ones not always taking point immediately, you know?
I guess even Hellboy to not or hardly act like a 'true leader', like Cpt. America would for example.
Liz would take point 'though, I wager. And so she should (otherwise she might get cranky - or crankier ).
Lobster Johnson would obviously 'take point' too - he'd bite Captain A.'s head clean off. But yeah, he's dead.

I think it's fair to say besides some fantastic art, the Abe solo stories have been kinda lackluster.
I'm surprised to read all this negativity about the Abe stories. I actually really liked The Haunted Boy! It was a tight little horror story, refreshingly removed from the elaborate tapestry of HB and BPRD mythology. It did everything a short story should: had a beginning, middle and an end in one self-contained issue, managed to introduces well-constructed characters with relatively few words or panels (not just Abe, but the kids' families) and packed a great twist ending!
Personally, I feel like the "main" Hellboy and BPRD books have become a bit too caught up in dense continuity, and I love well-done one-shots like this and The Bride of Hell. They remind me of the great Hellboy one-offs of old, like The Corpse or The Wolves of St. August.
There hasn't been an Abe story yet that I've disliked. I wasn't crazy about the art on Drums of the Dead, but I did like the story as a good debut solo adventure for Abe. The Drowning was a bit slow, but packed more than enough weirdness to satisfy this fan--plus some top-notch artwork!

.....there was a time when seeing 2 mignola books in a year was a glut. It got so bad what with the cramps, shivers and sweating that I was reduced to writing and drawing my own HB and Abe adventures, just to fill in the slow march of time:smile:....Abe is a very different character to Hellboy, the way he works his missions reflects his personality[ undercover and with subtlety not to mention with a hell of a lot more vulnerability than HB].Yet..he is the number#1 water op's guy for the BPRD...I for one welcome any "fish guy" stories as long as they are well written, and I haven't been disappointed yet,

I thought that the Edward Grey bit of The Drowning was absolutely awesome, but the rest of the series felt arbitrary and all over the place. I hate passive, unconfident Abe... Take-charge Abe is the one I've grown to love, and he emerges during Plague of Frogs and blooms in Garden of Souls.
I've been waiting for the trade on the non-Hellboy/BPRD books, Abe minis included.

Seeing these pictures of Hellboy with Excalibur, I'm starting to wonder if it won't eventually somehow become fused in one way or another with the RHoD. And I don't mean in the way that Mjolner fused with it in the Bones of Giants, but in a more mystic sort of way. Hmmmm...

Both of these Baltimore covers are SUPER!
On Excalibur: I love how simple it looks.

Your comment reminds me of one of the closing pages of Wild Hunt, where HB is seen swinging Excalibur around almost childishly- back and forth, and around in circles. Most likely testing its heft and probably moreso just enamored with his new 'toy'. This depiction only further reinforces how all things to HB- regardless of their importance in mythology and legend- are seen from a 'working man's' perspective. I love this about the character and enjoy that this has never changed- King of England or not, Beast of the Apocalypse or not.

Beautiful! They're all beautiful! I especially love the melting Texas and what's happening behind Abe.

Ryan Sook's done a cover. That's interesting. He hasn't drawn anything in the Mignolaverse since Hollow Earth. I wonder if that's all he's back for? After all, the search is still on for an artist to draw the next Lobster Johnson mini, The Burning Hand and it seems somewhat appropriate that the job go to the man that inked his debut.
Ryan Sook!! <3
They're all so gorgeous. Loving the Abe anatomy chart, wonder what the face in the background is. The first Hellboy gives me a déjà-vu I can't place.

Love the giant albino bat on the Mignola cover! My initial hope was that this would be the cover to the Scott Allie teased upcoming Mignola drawn Hellboy story (which is supposed to drop prior to his Hellboy: In Hell run), but ultimately it appears to be just a cover for Hampton's story- poo!!

Couldn't place it at first but just realized that the writing on the Abe anatomy chart is the same script that the frogs use. What on earth is going to happen to our favorite fish-man?

Whoa! There's a Scott-Allie-Drawn Hellboy in the mix!? How did I not hear about this?

There is some asymmetry in the head and neck features, maybe related to future metamorphosis ?

That Guy Davis cover is my new favourite, too!
My take on the asymmetry in the head and neck area is that the scan/x-ray is revealing things at or near the surface on one side and deeper below the surface on the other.

I really like the hellboy walking through the sea of blood with little coffins ... creepy
are those children coffins, because they seem pretty small?

I think they might be artistic license coffins.

lol.
I'm liking the Davis and Mignola ones more, but maybe it's just 'cause I'm used to those styles. I loved Ryan Sook's work on Hollow Earth, but this looks a bit different. Is that Dave Stewart inking?

I'm frantically digging the new covers! Especially the Mignola-Hellboy (it really is white!!) and the Sook.
I find it great that the Sook one seems somewhat more at ease with being Sook stylistically, the Hollow Earth BPRD seemed slightly regulated somehow, as if more stiff than Zattana or Kamandi I guess.
This seems as buff as the VS card art Liz for instance. Which had me floored.
From Sook I really get a Wally Wood or Al Williamson kind of vibe. So lushly illustrative yet fluently graphical. Like not too boastingly trying for photorealism per se, however with finding such lush rendering and detail all the same. Dedicated to consistency but still, not too shabby in delivering by any means.
Moebius's inking has that. Dave Stevens and Mark Schultz. Although Sook's stuff seems to me rather like oldschool-modern advertising art (from the 50's and 60's?). Like with a brush more rather. Dave Stevensy but more rugged or chairoscuros-cebebratingly?
The Hampton and Davis are way swell too.
The Davis Abe examination just hypnotizes, almost to the point of feeling able to interpret the scriblings. Almost.
And I like the cinematical quaintness (hauntingly taunting a tad like David Lynch getting festive) of the Hampton. Hellboy seems to be towering, maybe a bit like Corben's Hellboy walking through Africa panels.
I understand why I like it (Hellboy seems perfect and the setting with the streaming coffins mesmerizes), with even also for a bit not understanding what or how I like what I'm liking. Which I can like .
