View Full Version : Does anyone actually like these motion comics?

I tried to view Watchmen but didn't make it more than five minutes. I'd rather see the movie or read the original graphic novel. I just viewed the Astonishing X-Men #1 at Hulu for free and it was meh.
I can't get into these motion comics and honestly think they're a horrible idea. If they're going to be the comic book verbatim with limited animation and crummy voice acting, then frankly, I'd rather either read the original comic book or watch the latest one hour direct-to-DVD cartoon. All the way or none at all. I just don't see the point of these motion comics other than to make a quick buck.
(Although I'd really dig a cartoon series that is a direct adaptation of a popular comic book series and not toned down for kids or a shorter story!)

They really do lack the energy and fun of those old 60's Marvel Super Heroes shows.
And unless they've got anything which can match the pure, undiluted awesome that is:
"Doc Bruce Banner, pelted by Gamma Rays, ain't he unglamorayz?" or,
"Tony Stark makes you feel, he's a cool exec with a heart of steel"
Then what the heck is the point?

It's a nice bit of publicity, but it's nearly just asstatic as the books are. The voice acting isn't great and it's something that didn't really work 45 years ago. I agree with Pol, make it catchy and fun with the intro at least. Yeah, yeah it's serious art and all that now, but they can at least pretend to be having fun. And I found the Spiderwoman one completely unwatchable too drab and dreary.

Didn't you get the memo? Superheroes are 'serious business' (tm).
Cartoons too, apparently.
Fun, verve and energy are 'for kids'... and we certainly wouldn't want THAT.

The ones I've seen usually have shitty VA.
The best I've seen are good. Not great.

If they did a Deadpool or Incredible Herc Motion comic, hell a Nextwave one woul be great too. I might apprciate it more.
But what is the purpose of Marvel doing the Motion Comics?
Ad revenue I guess, but make something enjoyable, I imaginr more people will watch it, and that would attract more advertisers at higher rates. But whuddu I know?

The executives seem to love the hell out of them. Which is usually the first warning sign.

They don't have any appeal to me. Seems like a marketing idea taken way too far. If a company is going to be investing that kind of time and energy, they might as well make an animated feature.

No, you can call it a cartoon, you just have to specify that it's a shitty one.

I know it's snobby on my part, but couldn't they call them something other than comics.
They are not sequential art. They are just art from comics mutilated to move for animation.

art from comics mutilated to move for animation motion comics sounds a LOT better than the truth.

I'd rather listen to an audio(book) version over watching a "motion comics".

I've seen some people say they like them.
They're WRONG.
I know it's snobby on my part, but couldn't they call them something other than comics.
Like Michael says: cartoons. Shitty ones.

An audiobook version of Watchmen actually sounds more interesting. You can do interesting things by translating it into an entirely different medium, try to figure how to do things like the squid in audio.

Nope. They're crap. Voice acting is awful, animation is lazy, and it's not the same as holding a real comic in your hand.

You'll know it's time to turn the page when you hear Rorschach murmer, like this:

I contend that motion comics has its place in entertainment... they just aren't usually employed very well. I certainly wouldn't want more than three minutes or so of them at a time. I think they can occasionally make good trailers for comics, or be good segue pieces in video games or even maybe some movies.

I have never read/watched one of them, as far as I know Marvel STILL hasn't released any in the UK yet  Does anyone have any news on this? The last I remember is Joe Q promising shortly after the release of SW #1 that he was 'working on it'.
