View Full Version : I'm dropping titles left & right.....

I just filled out my DCBS form for January release and I noticed I'm buying a hell of a lot less, even with the Blackest Night "resurrected titles" a part the order.

I just dropped GA/BC (yes, finally!), Magog, Web, Shield, JSA (not even bothering with JSA All-Stars), and Superman/Batman.

That's on top of me already having dropped both Titans titles and Batman Confidential last month.

Up next might be Outsiders (I've enjoyed Tomasi's take on it, but he's off it now), REBELS (this is really on the bubble), and Doom Patrol (though I REALLY like Matthew Clark and Kevin Maguire's work).

I cannot remember the last time I cut so many titles all at once, probably when I purged all Marvel titles. And this time it's not for financial reasons, it's just that the books are freakin' horrible. I'm all for diversity and reading something new, but they also need to make the books good, too.

I also enjoyed Tomasi on the title. I was worried that I wouldn't like the new direction when Dixon left, but I stuck it out and was glad I did.

I dropped Justice League when McDuffie was removed, more out of protest than anything else. Unfortunately for DC comics, they did most of my pull reduction all themselves --

Nightwing was a regular pull, it's gone.
Flash was regular, it's gone.
Birds of Prey, gone.

I stuck with Batman and it's not been bad at all. I did cut Dectective though. I dropped Superman when Kurt came off the title and haven't picked it back up. I had already cut Teen Titans & there was no way I was picking up the Titans book, but I did like the BN tie-in and mostly enjoyed it.

All that said, what I'm left with I am enjoying with the exception of GA/BC. I still enjoy Superman / Batman, but noticed you cut that one, and of course Secret Six, GL, GLC -- all those regular pulls have remained fun.

I'd DC a B+ on the 2009 year. That's a big increase over last year because I was mostly an unhappy camper in 2008.

Why in the lord's holy name were you ANYWHERE NEAR GA/BC anymore? Are you a masochist?

REBELS got a lot better with the Annual. So maybe its worth another shot? Unless you hated that Annual?

As for Marvel? There are likely even still a few worthy ones--if they DON'T tie in the "Dark Everything" nonsense (or the upcoming round of "Hulk" nonsense, which seems like its going to have a half dozen or more titles). You know... the lone wolf books and/or the alternate continuity ones... Books like Daredevil, for example, which doesn't seem to give a crap what else is going on elsewhere at Marvel.

DROP IT!

Its been a year with Kreisberg and it still suycks.. and all future solicitations are telling us that there is no change in sight!

I had sticker shock, when my last month's tab was almost $200 (WITH my healthy discount and very, very cheap shipping rates).

yeah. . I'm about to go thru a culling myself (I've already abandoned all the Superman books other than "World of New Krypton" and "Secret Origin" -- as I like my Superman books to be about. . . you know, Superman).

I was buying GA/BC mainly for Mike Norton's art.... but then they started having Bill Sienkiewicz in it and it got ugly. (I like both men's artwork, but not together.)

REBELS is up and down. The annual was ok. not a big Starro fan and the ret-con of the character is meh to me anyway. I'll stick with through the Balckest Night tie-in and then decide from there.

As for Marvel.... fuck 'em. Seriously. I dropped 95% of the stuff I was buying during Avengers Disassembled. Buying only Wolverine: Origins for the awesome Steve Dillon art and Astonishing X-Men for the incredible John Cassaday art. Once they left the titles, I dropped them. the last Marvel title I bought was the Iron Man mini by Michelinie & Layton.

Odds of me buying anything Marvel ever again is on par with the Cubs winning the World Series this year.

I got a hell of a shock earlier today when I found out I was overdrawn three days after being paid.

So I'm not going anywhere near a comic shop for another six months.

I've had to drop a lot of comics because of grad school, a paycut at a contracting gig, payroll problems with said contracting gig, and lots of travel (five fucking weddings this year... five... yeah, it's fun and all, but five).

Last year I used to spend about $40-$60 a month on comics. Now it's about $20 every two months if even that. I'm just planning to wait and dollar bin a lot of stuff at the next Con I go to.

The total for this order I commented on above was for $112. That's with the DCBS discount and delivery. That's about $30-35 I've cut.

Not including the resurrected DC titles, I'm under a $100 for the first time in over a decade.

Same here. About DC, I am only with Batman, Batman&Robin, Detective Comics and Blackest Night.
In other hands I am buying a lot of old books, old TPB´s, old stories arcs... etc.
I would love to buy more things... honestly... but DC is not working for me.

What is strange because... well, DC put 6 titles on top 10 last month. So, it is not working for me... but other people are kind of ok.

The incredible, is the amount of females I dropped in the few last years.

BOP, Batgirl(Cass), Batgirl(Steph, I never even started to buy this), Sirens( I never even started to buy), BC/GA, Wonder Woman*...

A list of characters that I love. Mainly, Babs, Cass, Canary and Huntress…
And all I can read now is Batwoman in Detective comics(and mainly because of the art... but Rucka is good too).

(*- Just explaining why I dropped WW too, because there are many WW fans here, and we are on the writer’s forum. I love Gail as writer. What she did on BOP was marvelous. She is my first pick, if they re-launch a BOP, or another title with Babs. Or, even, anything else.
But, what draw so much my attention in Gail writing BOP, was the way she worked the femininity there. The way she handle strength, fragility, and sentiments, and the relationships. And the complexity of each of those characters, and the complexity of the interactions between those characters.
WW, was never a character that I really like. So, I was picking it basically because of Gail. But I noticed that WW is a character a bit harder to work those elements that I like on BOP. It is a different kind of femininity. And I sense a small margin to work those elements on WW.
Maybe Gail is ultra comfortable to write it...
... it is just that I don’t like the character, and the limitations in its complexity.
So... I drop it too =/ )

My pull list was never huge but I recently dropped everything except for : Dark Avengers, New Avengers, and Ultimate Spider-Man. Yeah, I'm a Bendis junkie. If budget constraint allow that week I might grab a random issue of something off the comic wall.

Anyway, I'm actually picking up MORE titles. Everytime i drop something, I pick up two more in its place. You should see my list. It's ridiculous.

JSA has finally picked up steam under Willingham and Sturges. Just took some time to develope the story-arc. I wanna see whats going on here with the mysteries they have dropped there. The Deathstroke led Titans has me intrqiued. I may try the 1st issue of it. To see how it goes. It seems DC is listening to me finally and doing a "New Titans" revamp of Titans by placing guys like Tattoo Man in the book , who were never Titans.

I've seen your pull list mentioned in Ritas. I am in AWE of it to be honest. If I had the money its likely my pull would br 40 books a month or 50. Right now its 20-25 in there.

Ya should list your pull here. I would bow to it...

It's a shame. I've had to drop a few books as well.

I dropped Uncanny X-Men at the end of the horrid Utopia crossover. Talk about phoning in an ending....

Unless the next few JLA issues really wow me, I'll be dropping that as well, as Cry For Justice has been HORRID, and JLA 38 was extremely mediocre.

Staying with Superman, but really just because I LOVE Cafu's art.

Dropped Titans, but staying with TT, at least until the Blackest Night crossover ends.

And after one issue, I dropped Doom Patrol as well. At this point, my DC pull is shockingly small compared to my Marvel.

That's same for me. When I dropped CFJ, I started picking up X-Factor again, which is by the way, one of the best books on the market right now.

I'm down to just trades and the two monthlies I was getting I had to drop, for financial reasons.

I'm hoping things pick up next year, financially, anyway, but I must say going over to trades makes me reluctant to pick up any monthly until it's collected. It's a longer wait but a more full read that way.

S'okay, that's what I read it as too. I was curious as to how and why Kevin was dropping all these titties!

My husband actually just closed his box at our LCS. We have been so incredibly busy, that we would spend money on a bunch of comics and they would just sit on the shelf and never get read. If there is stuff we really want to read, we will catch up at Christmas time and use it for gift ideas.

I've dumped JLA, JSA, Batgirl, Detective Comics, Booster Gold, GA / BC, R.E.B.E.L.S., Outsiders, Teen Titans, Hack / Slash and a couple of others recently.

My buying list is 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine, Power Girl, Secret Six and Wonder Woman at the moment.

It isn't that I don't like several of the books I dropped, it is just that I don't get to the store regularly and my comics bills can mount up if I'm weeks behind. The UK prices on some of the books are hellish at the moment too.

If my health allows me to get to Glasgow more often then I'll consider a bigger list again.

I decided that the end of that would be a good time to take a break from comics.
Since then I have been paring titles fromm my pull list regularly. Already dropped all the Superman books and Justice League. Probably be dropping most of the Batman titles in the next month or two. I don't even think I'll be keeping Wonder Woman or Secret 6 around.

On the Marvel Front, Everything gets dropped once Siege and Doomwar are over. They just gave me nice exit points for Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy so those are gone. (The art on the last issue of Guardians was not to my taste at all so it's not a hard decision.) Necrosha will mark the end for the X-books.

This will leave me with an extra $200 dollars a month. The last time I dropped comics, it was almost 5 years before something was good enough to attract me back. With prices the way they are, if I come back at all it will only be used TPBs or Marvel's on-line service.

Ditto!

Judge Dredd Megazine is very close to getting snipped. Which is a pity, cos I snipped it before and then picked it up again, it'd suck to do a repeat.

This is the only monthly title I am getting and probably will continue to the end because I am an Adam Warlock junkie.

Also for over the past year I have been trading out of my collection with Lone Star Comics to buy more classic comics. I've probably spent maybe $50 of actual cash over the last year, and that includes my birthday present my wife got me (as it all comes out of my income).

I've just gone through another wave of cuts, too, and I think I'm down to about 5 ongoings now. If it weren't for Secret Six and Power Girl, and my inner 12-year-old squee!-ing about Paul Levitz's return to the Legion even though it will probably disappoint me, I think I would probably take a break from comics altogether for a while.

But seriously, it's one of the best books out there. There's really nothing else like it at DC or Marvel.

What's left on your list, player?

I have done the same thing. With the constant reboots, renumbering, etc, price increase (with quality decrease) I have gone from around 50 pull items to about 3-4 over the last few years. I used DCBS for HCs and TPBs but at this point the only reason i buy floppies is to maintain a relationship with the comic book store. Nowadays comics are barely worth the price of the paper they are printed on (might get more value using them as toilet paper then buying actual TP) so sure don't get them for collector reasons. I still enjoy the stories, but the cost is simply not worth it anymore.

But the Web looks awesome! It's by Angela Robinson! I disagree with you about Nortin/Sienkiewicz being ugly, it's absolutely beautiful imo, especially that splash page of Mia pulling up on her new (stolen -_-) motorcycle!

I, gosh, I buy Batgirl, Batwoman, Secret Six and Wonder Woman, and I'm kind of waffling on the last one unless the next two issues are wowzers.

The Web is awesome, but it sells like shit-sandwiches. I'll be very surprised if it makes it to 8 issues.

The whole Red Circle event was a poor idea on DC's part.

The massive crossovers make it real easy to drop books. Thank goodness!

The trades are better to pick up, in terms of cost effectiveness and 'good read' ratio. So that works for me.

Every couple years I end up chopping books - sometimes due to money, often due to quality, and sometimes because of space.

(Hey I live in nyc and space is a premium!)

these were my orders from the past 4 weeks (still missed some like Batwoman, Wonder Woman and Secret Six though. Gonna get em next visit! ):

Yeah, I was drawn into this from seeing that Crain would be doing some of the art chores. I had hoped he would've done more pages though. but it was kinda interesting to see where things were in the x-universe.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/NecroshaX.jpg

Yeah, Sana draws the woman all hot like. But her art is attractive nonetheless. The story was actually decent too.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/MsMarvel46.jpg

I know, I know...but even as I passed on the 1st and 2nd issues, a quick scan and this one seemed a bit better, so I bit. Art was okay, and story aimed at a different fan than me, so I wasn't interested, but I hope others would be so intrigued.

truly a fun story, even with the serious cancer thing within, this ended up a nice little romp in the Marvel U.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/MarvelDivas4.jpg

Nice, very nice. Awesome collection of creators of all kinds worked on this, and it's for a good cause. Expensive, but a lot of bang for the buck.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/LibertyComics2.jpg

An incredibly fun little mini-comic from this newcomer. I have to admit, the title got me.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/Idlikepancakesminicomic.jpg

Groo! Well, I haven't gotten this in a while and this one seemed to be on par as the past ones. It was very enjoyable and I have nothing to complain about, but neither can I rave about anything spectacular. The ending letters pages was very enjoyable!

like the geektress girls say, the artist is an 'ass man', that gets in the way at times, but I enjoy this series. art and writing all.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/GothamCitySirens5.jpg

this issue was good. a nice way to conclude the storyline, but continue the series. I'm beginning to think this would be a better read in collected form.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/Chew5.jpg

Obviously love the talents involved, and though this moves quietly and slow, this is a great title.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh228/michaelphotos22/RedHerring3.jpg

Loved, loved, loved this issue! Here is where writing and art were able to combine in a way that can only be done for Amanda, which she has not had the opportunity for a long while. With the correct writing, her abilities shine!

I've long admired Jamaica's art, but never before had I seen as much of it at once, in a story as this GN, so I was happy when I saw it solicited. I was not disappointed. I was also not very acquainted with her web stuff, so it was totally new to me. Very angsty and emo, I loved this story.

I said "parents", not parents, or Mom and Dad.

In other words, my...genetic parents were jerks (to say the least).. No need to feel sorry.

Also, I was making the Batman joke,
