This comes just after the List:Secret Warriors, as John Garrett and Fury are after this guy in Treasury, and Garret goes into his office to meet him, and leaves something in there. We don't know what.
This book opens with the SW running to get to the roof tops of a Fury Base, because the base has been breached by the DA. The speed girl has to get out of bed and join the fight. She beats up Hawkeye something fierce. Ares slams his battle axe into the brutish guy of the SW, and it just lodges there, but he keeps beating on Ares despite it. Quake tries to blow Iron Patriots head off, but somehow Osborn blasts her unconscious, and she needed saving by the big guy. The countdown for self destruct gets close, so the SW teleport away, compliments of the Aboriginal guy, but Ares doesn't make it out, as he waits behind to go after the God of Fear, and is caught in the explosion. He survives.
This moved the plot along as far as showing us the powers of some of the SW, but magic boy does nothing in this. The return girl with the super speed, has a good showing, and Iron Patriot does a lot better than I imagined. But the big surprise was the big brawny guy. He can take a lot of punishment, although he was hurt by one of Hawkeyes blast arrows.

This comes just after the List:Secret Warriors . . . Before. This issue takes place before the one-shot.

Are you sure? In the List, aren't Garret and Fury sitting in a car discussing this Treasury guy, or was that SW #8?

Treasury guy is shot in the List.

That'd be #8, although i think that scene is trying to make us ponder whether that's the REAL Nick Fury (again), cuz Garrett was commenting on how out of character Nick was.
The List is the one where we had the big reveal of Hydra = every major corporation/organization in the world right? From SHIELD to that dude's hot dog cart down the street, right?

I gotta say, I'm drawing a blank on both of those responses. I obviously have to "go back to formula" and re-read the LIST.

Yes, but that was Nick trying to test if Garrett was real... god I hate espionage.

Heh. This chapter was awesome. Yo-yo went from random minor speedster to pure badass--at least to me. And it's always fun seeing people mash Bullseye into paste.

Well, I've read the List and #8 and yes, this comes before the LIST. What Fury has found out is that Waters is a danger to national security, and is forced to play his hand against him, (which is what he does in the LIST). "The other thing" that Garret refers too may not be neccesarily Leviathan, because Fury is part of Leviathan (and as we found out in LIST, Leviathan is in hiatus), so I think it has something to do with an old threat that Leviathan is aware of that has resurfaced, and Leviathan has to be re-ignited to face it.

well this issue is very different as it's missing alot of the sharp dialogue and character building the series is usually heavy on.

Very good. I liked Eden explaining how his power works and I loved Yo-Yo going all badass especially on Hawkeye.

I hate when minor, audience=friendly characters get their wholly-unbelievable "victory" over more established, more powerful villains. It's such a trite writer ploy.
This issue was garbage, plain and simple. Overly-extended fight scene with the crowd-pleasing underdog winning out? Come on.

Other than Ares (i want the dude from the mini!) and Sentry being big damn powerful, how strong are the rest of the Dark Avengers?
Iron Patriot is a knockoff Iron Man that has CONSISTENTLY been shown as 2nd rate (cuz Normie aint no Stark). Not to mention Ms Marvel (ooh i luvs her) just 1 shotted his punk ass in NA #50 and told him how she could WTFpwn his ass if she wanted too (ooh so sassy).
Moonstone i guess has lately been portrayed as a rough Ms Marvel equivalent in power, but MM's power level has been fluctuating alot in her appearences, that i dunno how she really rates. I mostly blame Reed since the last year of Ms Marvel has been pretty damn rough for the poor delusional gal.
Daken is Wolverine lite. I know Wolverine is considered a God by some with him showing up in like 20 comics a month and thus his plot armor and skillz building up to a gargantuan rate, but in a raw power rating just having super fast healing isnt really all that impressive.
Bullseye is some normal dude who never misses. Now other than being a sociopath who loves to kill defenseless sheeple or cannon fodder en masse (which he's great at) if he really had to throwdown with some folks who's got powers he's gonna get his ass torn apart.
Noh-Varr is Captain Mar-Vell reborn (sorta), so basically a super being somewhere between Ms Marvel (who he supposedly took out 1v1 with ease) and those big mamma jammas (Sentry, Hulk, etc). But with his realization at how the DA are a bunch of punks looks like he flew the coop and is a nonfactor.
So other than Sentry and Ares doing the heavy lifting in the fighting and intimidation, the rest of the cast arent that great of fighters or are powerful enough to just end a fight in one shot. So yes, i can TOTALLY see a bunch of plucky kids + Nick "I look like Samuel L Jackson in Ultimates" Fury taking them down in their own title

You forgot Venom, who's probably at about Iron Patriot levels of threat. But yeah, in terms of raw power, Fury's kids probably do have the edge, as long as the Sentry doesn't show up. Remember, Norman can't have anyone too strong on his team, or he'll be deposed.

While its true the DA lacks in raw horsepower in most cases they've got years upon years of experience... and these kids for the most part are still pretty raw... so I think in a series of matches you'd probably see the DA come out ahead in the long run... but I could see the kids getting wins here and there...

Yeah, I thought he was just your standard-issue strong guy, but he looked like he was made out of crystals some of the time. Maybe I missed something, but I was wondering just who the hell he was for a few pages.

Very little has so far been revealed about the character, but Bendis has revealed that his father is a "major Marvel icon".
Stonewall's father Super Adaptiod, Absorbing Man, or someone else?

If NA #58 and SW #9 were in-continuity, then the DA had their asses wooped in two issues this week.

And really, Ares was baby sitting the DA, so that nobody would cry during play time, otherwise Ares would come down on the DA for touching his kid and his friends.

Yeah, it sure does look like Stonewall is Absorbing Man's kid. Or at least, that's the conclusion Hickman is pointing us to right now. BIg, bald guy who transforms into other materials. That might be a little too on the nose.
This issue felt kind of light on substance compared to previous ones. It was mostly a big fight scene, and it was an good one. Just like I said, a little light on substance.
I'm still unsure how this Ares/Alexander stuff matches up to their issue in Dark Avengers.

If he is Absorbing Man's kid, I wonder if that would make him Titania's kid too.
But he's probably be too old for that.

When don't the DA get their butts whooped though.
For a powerful team, they do pretty much suck.
Not suprising though. These were mostly people that lost to the heroes 99% of the time when they were villains. This is just more of the same.

Yea, with Spidey whining how the NA is "outpowered" by the DA, i kinda find it funny how the DA gets their asses kicked all the time like the new incarnation Thunderbolts (ah i still love those losers anyway). I mean if the SW can do it, then NA can do it with their eyes closed and 1 armed tied behind their back

Stonewall seems to gain not only strength and some invulneribility but he grows to super-size as well....and his eyes glow.
Oddly, he's only done that after being seriously cut by a blade- first Gorgon then Ares- and, while they show him being bandaged up afterwards both times, there must be some healing ability at play (Ares's axe to the chest would have been fatal otherwise).
As to substance- the SW the list blew me away with sunstance!
The Great Wheel of the Zodiac, which lists both Fury, Dum Dum, Garrett and Strucker as members -plus something called the Zodiac Event which made the upper leadership of the (new uber-bad organization) Leviathan go "dormant" in cryo stasis.
The Wheel Chart also lists Mikel Fury as Scorpio and as deceased (whereas the first charts in SW #1 indicate he's alive.

Not quite. The chart in issue #1 lists Mikel Fury as active.
The chart in DRTL lists JAKE Fury as a deceased part of the Great Wheel.

I have to admit...I thouroughly and immensely enjoyed this issue...even minus the 'exposition'...I quite like a book that is pure adrenaline from beginning to end, every now and again. And Hickman has managed to balance both action and exposition quite well. This book keeps getting better and better with every successive issue...LOVE IT!

Though to be fair, they usually lost to people who were just as experienced as them, not to rookies with little field experience.

cant wait to see how Ares and his son issue will end up but i think Ares wont do anything 2 harm his son
I suspect, although I can't prove, that the meat of the List issue (namely, the bits about Leviathan) were designed to be the b-story in this arc. Since it was put into the special, things are padded out a bit in the main book.

I've just read it through again...for the seventh time since yesterday...and I have only just noticed that Jerry escaped with Ares' axe buried in his chest. Awesome!...He's holding it in his hands while the team is in the recovering room. Double Wicked! Now Ares has two reasons to come after them.

Those two things were weird for me.
He didnt know he was inside the building he was looking at .... from the outside some minutes ago?
And Yo Yo's got custom made cyber arms that work at her super speeds?
