The issue is really three stories: one main one and two backups, each by the writers of X-Force, New Mutants, and X-Men Legacy. For X-Force fans, the artist is Clayton Crain, so its like getting two issues of X-Force in one week.
Already this is shaping up to be miles better than Utopia. There are some big similarities between the two stories, such as a large cast of both heroes and villains, but the biggest difference is in while Utopia focused mainly on Norman Osborn and Cyclops, with the other characters existing only in supporting roles, there are no central characters here, with the focus split evenly, giving each character a moment to be the lead. You can tell right off the bat how accustomed to writing a team book K&Y are, as they seem to juggle a huge cast with ease. Wells and Carey focus their stories on individual characters, but Cypher and Destiny haven't had much of a focus on them in the past, so its really an opportunity to flesh out these characters and their new status quo as the undead slaves of Selene.
Of course, Selene is the main villain. Anyone who’s been reading X-Force has seen the slow build of Selene's plans to appropriate Bastion’s techno-organic virus to resurrect dead mutants as her slaves. Her first order of business seems to be revenge against everyone who has betrayed her or thwarted her plans, namely Sebastian Shaw and the X-Men. In addition to Cypher and Destiny, her undead army includes mutants like the Blink from the regular Marvel universe, Wither, Senyaka of the Acolytes, The Hellions, Pyro, Caliban and the original Thunderbird John Proudstar.
In her approach to the Utopia on the floating Asteroid M, she first takes out Danger, the warden of Cyclops’ mutant prison, and sends Henry Leland and Shinobi Shaw to confront Sebastian Shaw, which (subplot!) alerts Bastion, viewing via Donald Pierce’s eyes, that someone else is in control of his mutant resurrecting technology.
Back in the X-infirmary, (SPOILERS FOR X-FORCE #20) X-23 is recovering from having her arm cut off by nearly completely growing a new arm, which she wants her claws put back in. In another comparison to Uncanny, the guy in the white suit who I assume to be Doctor Nemesis does more to get me interested in who he is than all his appearances in Uncanny X-Men to date. This is how you write these characters. Before things can get too interesting though, Wolverine and X-23 sense that something is wrong, and there are intruders. These intruders are the Hellions, who are really pissed at Emma for letting them die. Seeing them sends her into what looks like a psychotic break. Really subtly, the Hellions give the X-Men and the readers some important information. First, they let the X-Men know that Selene is in charge of them, and they let the readers know that they can’t be killed by Wolverine stabbing one of them through the chest with no effect. Wolverine gets blasted away, leaving Cyclops and Domino to deal with Tarot, who appears to have summoned the grim reaper…
Outside, Warpath and Archangel are transporting Wolfsbane and Hrimharl back from their fight with the frost giants of Asgard (this would make perfect sense if you were reading X-Force) Their plane gets shot down but Warpath and Archangel fly on the own to Utopia and are confronted by PYRO and Berserker in one of the coolest looking splash pages I’ve seen in a long time.
Finally, at the end, we find out Selenes real plan as she lands at Hammer Bay, Genosha. A graveyard of 16 million mutants.
This story is an example of a crossover done right. Carefully balancing all the characters and all the differing plots into a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. As usual, Clayton Crain’s art is both amazing in looks and storytelling. The image of Genosha in particular is haunting. Though also as usual, his art has a tendency to get a little too dark and murky, but that’s not really a problem here.
The two back up stories are well done as well. The Cypher story especially. Special praise goes to the letterer (letterist?) for the cool binary narrative boxes that Cypher interprets the world through. His is a simple story where he leads the Hellions through the X-Men’s security in order to get inside Utopia I’ve never seen the artists work before, but Ibraim Robertson is definitely someone to watch out for in the future.
Finally is Mike Carey and Lawrence Campbell’s Destiny story. Campbell’s art is like a mix of Jean Paul Leon and David Aja, so you know it looks good. Destiny is in Selene’s jail, unable to get a clear vision of the future due to the time she spent being dead, but while she’s there she sends her astral form to visit Blindfold, who she calls her daughter. She gives Blindfold a message that the reader can’t read, and then returns to her body, but when she gets back, she believes she made a mistake. I’m assuming that Destiny’s involvement in this story all but guarantees that Mystique will show up too.
All in all, this is an incredible way to start off such an ambitious story. I hope that this leads to K&Y being further involved with the X-books, because they really seem to know what to do with these characters.

this sounds sooo awesome. besides knowing how to write an ensemble cast, kyle & yost also know how to write amazing stories that still acknowledge the vast history of the x-men. it's funny how their stuff makes me like other people's work less (i.e. fraction). i really hope one day they'll be writing uncanny x-men.

They don't look like zombies. They're aware that they're dead, and aware that they can't be killed again, and they retain much of their old personality, aside from a complete loyalty to Selene. Except for Destiny, who is just begging Selene to free her.

I'm kinda expecting Warlock to clean up some of the dead mutants, leaving only their fleshy bits and none of the technostuff, laving them alive and out of Selene's control. At the least Doug.

Well, in Anihilation it was shown that he was able to clean the TO infection. The problem is... if you clean a TO infected dead mutant, you get a dead mutant or an alive one?
And, by the way, Genosha is not a Graveyard of 16 million mutants. It was stated in Endangered Species that even the dead mutants had lost their x-gene... so it is a graveyard of some mutants and a lot of depowered mutants...

You're confusing Empath with Shinobi.
Anyway, if Doug Ramsey hadn't been in it, I'd give this book 10 stars. They are making an active effort to return the X-Men's enemies to greatness, after they'd been depleted by the 90s and by Decimation. If even half these guys remain active, then the franchise walks out of this in a much better place.

I really hope they don't kill off the Kleinstocks behind the scenes like they did Shinobi for the "dead Acolytes squad" the solicits mentioned. Last we saw Shinobi, he was alive and well. It makes no sense for him to be dead now, especially since he was one of the 198. What, did Sebastian Shaw suddenly decide in the past year (if even that in comic time) to find and kill his son?

I simply think Destiny didn't know about Blindfold. Now don't ask me how she could have had a kid at age 90 or how she can have a kid and forget about it. Either way, there's some kind of relation between them being made clear.

I didn't think Selene planned it, I thought that her control prevents Destiny from betraying her, so she gives Blindfold wrong info. That was my take, at least.
And I also think that the connection between her powers was what drove her to Blindfold. No blood relation.

One could surmise that when the Mutant Decimation happened and King lost his powers, she returned to her natural state of being dead (no longer animated by him). With this explanation, her presence amongst the dead Hellions fits like a glove.

Fantastic issue, the art was outstanding, especially those pages of Pyro and Tarot using their powers.
I hope they Hellions stick around after this, always thought they were cooler then the New Mutants. Also, i don't see the problem with Shinobi being dead? Shaw says in this very issue that he killed him. Does it really matter if it happend of panel? At least he's being used.

I always liked him, but his development after he got the virus was really good. The stuff on Empyrean's island (whatever happened to THAT guy?) with Avalanche was poignant and his stuff with Mystique and Senator Kelly afterwards was great.

listen you, i don't know what your game is but its been canon since her introduction that x-23's healing factor is stronger than wolverine's because he is plagued by all that adamantium. and anyway, deadpool's healing factor is not even natural...comes from the same weapon x who copied it off of wolverine....so i don't even know why you would bring him up.

I'm not knocking it, I just didn't know it was possible. In Guggenheim's defense, Wolverine did have something for the tissue to grow over top of, not just an empty cavity. but if this is the diredction the writers want to take her more power to them. I've enjoyed the current arc quite a bit!
I, for one, have no problem with it. to be honest, when I saw her taking the adamantium out of her "old" arm, I thought she knew she was going to regrow it... What I like about it is that it is shown that she needs time to regrow it, and its a somewhat taxing process, not the insta-healing Wolverine had in the 90´es

The same Wolverine rule applies. Like Wolverine, if she was decapitated, her head would need to be moved far enough away from the body to prevent the healing factor from trying to reattach it.
So what, is her head just going to grow legs and walk over to reattach itself? Unless she has some assistance from someone putting them together, I don't see how it's possible.
http://www.starstore.com/acatalog/thing-spiderhead-statue-e.jpg
Unless her head or body bleeds out into the direction of where the head is, and the blood turns into tissue - pulling both head and body together... That would probably make more logical sense.

Actually, its a bit different than what you described. It's suppose to be separating the two halves of Wolverine's brain, and placing them on opposite sides of the world.... Even so, that's a ridiculous way to make sure he's dead. Wouldn't it be better to just jetison him into space and leave him to die?

Yost and Kyle must really love Selene. She was such a joke character for awhile now. Its good to see her as the threat she truly is. (Joke: Meaning the complete ownage Rachel gave her during that crazy Viper arc. Emma even had the gall to say she could of beaten Selene with ease). Selene has taken some high profile people outta the game....like reducing Emma to a babbling idiot and brought back the unexpected (Harry Leland, Beserker).
Doug actually graduated from having the most useless combat powers to being probably the best in the field. Look Out Sage!

Leland should seek out Tessa and Storm for vengeance. The least they could have done was some mouth-to-mouth and a few chest compressions for appearance's sake.
This made me LOL. Well played.
i always thought shinobi was a great character. i'm looking forward to reading about him here.
who was the scariest zombie so far?
Harry Leland is the one that made me cheer the loudest, I wasn't expecting to see him or Shinobi. So happy about that.
But Pyro was pretty scary. The flame construct he made looked awesome.
When Tarot whipped out a Grim Reaper... s***, if there ever was a panel Clayton Crain was made to draw, that was it.
What this issue had, that's been lacking in some X-books the past year is this: MOTIVATION. Characters had it, and it made sense. The Hellions dogging out Emma? One of the most logical, and powerful Emma scenes in awhile. Destiny trying to warn Rogue? Brilliant. Harry Leland messing with Shaw? Outstanding. Bastion reacting to Shaw defying nature itself, and realizing his own plan to defeat mutants had been hijacked? AMAZING twist. Selene, overall, with her own cabal of people with a chip on their shoulder, in regards to the X-Men? Bravo.
And you know what? I believed everyone would say, what they were saying, in those situations. The reactions to such an unnatural, surreal happening came off as genuine.I cheered at Harry Leland and Shinobi confronting Shaw. Out loud. Every cameo in this isn't just that, these are people revived, and looking for payback. With Genosha lying on the horizon.
Single best issue of the year, that I've read. Not an exaggeration. This is a comic book triumph. And not of the Insult Comic Dog variety.

No. Emma is a sociopath. The retconning of sincere concern for her students sticks in my craw and has bothered me for years. The character is still usable, and, in fact, more hilarious when you write her as the cold inhuman wench that she was always meant to be.

I really hope they don't kill off the Kleinstocks behind the scenes like they did Shinobi for the "dead Acolytes squad" the solicits mentioned. Last we saw Shinobi, he was alive and well. It makes no sense for him to be dead now, especially since he was one of the 198. What, did Sebastian Shaw suddenly decide in the past year (if even that in comic time) to find and kill his son?
didn't Sebastian somewhat suggest that he had Shinobi killed ("dealt with") when he reappeared suddenly alive way back when? i remember him having that weird scar over his eye, aligning with Holocaust, and talking about Shinobi in the past tense.

I think on early Gen-X she was still pretty bitchy. I love that one time when she cracked Leech´s skull, to the utter astonishment of Marrow...
I suppose but I don't buy the caring Emma sketch. The only kid she ever cared about was that crazy Cuckoo girl, and that was out of narcissistic personality disorder.

Don't you think it could have had something to do with Fraction's excellent characterization and story-telling abilites?the sales numbers prove that the success of Utopia was due to the Dark Avengers and not due to Fraction's writing. the crossover did very little to affect the unit sales of Dark Avengers, but it brought up Uncanny's to Dark Avengers numbers. however, once the crossover finished, Uncanny went back to it's pre-crossover numbers.

How does any of that have anything to do with what I said? You've been on this board this long and you still havent figured out how to have a point yet?
The point I was making was that you were incorrect with what you knew about the Xavier protocols... All those years of going to school and you still haven't learned to analyze what you were reading?
It doesn't matter if you know how they work... I was telling you what it specifically said about Wolverine...That was my point.

Wow! I read the issue and I'm extremely excited to read more of this. The Hellions bit was by far my favorite part of Necrosha. I'm hoping and praying that Adrienne Frost will appear at one point in this crossover to haunt Emma but at the same time I think we've had enough Emma focused stories in 2009.

He was classified as dead as far as Marvel was concerned, but if what Filthy Mutie says is true, I can't wait to have him back...
In fact, I'd love for him to be a regular villain in the X-Books, seeing that he can adapt his powers to counter the X-Men's.

When did he get the T.O. virus from Cable?
Also, is there any difference between this T.O virus and the one Apocalypse gave Cable?
Just thinking that if there is, it might be the X-men's "ace in the hole" when he and Hope come back and Bastion makes his final move in Second Coming. After all, Cable has fought and defeated Bastion twice that i can recall (once during Operation Zero Tolerance and another time in some annual guest-starring Machine Man).

If I'm not mistaken, he got a blood transfusion from Cable after being critically wounded in battle. Then was sent to Xavier's to become a student - but he refused, and went to the dark side.
Though I'm not exactly clear on what Post's powers are, other than to mentally control the techno armor covering his body.

I couldn't agree more. I remember seeing the first issues of Generation X, wondering who that boring blond woman was. I couldn't believe that it was Emma; they had turned an awesome villain into Carol Brady.
Isn't that the beginning of where Morrison got his taste for Emma? Lobdell's Emma was much more fierce than anything we've seen since Morrison or Whedon.

And thank you for the scans. I've orgasmed just seeing that scene with Catseye. I hope she rips Wolfsbane's throat out.
Did Wither do anything of note?
I"m also surprised Emma lost it. She was confronted with images of the Hellions that seemed real in a Gen X annual I think and she did freak out but held it together and got through it. You'd think she'd be over it by now? But still a great scene.

X-Force was cool too. A very nice Laura story. I wonder if X will finally stop Kimura somehow.
EDIT: Also it's nice to finally know where the Elixir and Vanisher portraits on the recap pages came from. That was driving me nuts. That ad must have been drawn way back.
It's kinda an odd ad too, Warpath is front and center and the only one in costume, and Rhane looks like a boy. And apparently it's fun to be in X-Force? When did that happen? Somehow I doubt anyone but Dom would agree with that idea.

I think black bikini is a symbol. Human life means nothing to ancients like Selene and Apocalypse. She has no qualms about wiping out entire populations. She considers herself a goddess, and peasants like Emma Frost, Sebastian Shaw and Alison Crestmere have defiled her. She'll commit genocide just to get back at them.

I don't see Petra and Sway coming into this. Selene is motivated by pettiness. She has nothing specific against Xavier, so why bring back those two? It's more likely she'd bring back Esme and Sophie in her vendetta against Emma, however Esme would stab her in the back without hesitation once she saw her boytoy, Magneto, in action.

I hope there's a character arc here for Emma. Really, the only way for her to work through this is for her to get her shit together and snap the necks of a few Hellions herself. I nominate Catseye and Jetstream for this role. Beef can also die by her hand as well.

Re: Emma (yes I adore this character)
Emma's always had emotions; I think a key appeal (which is why lately she's been frustrating) is one question: how far will she go before she cracks? How much can she take before the Ice Queen melts? It's not just the AbFab bitchiness (which I do adore ... Patsy as a superhero!)
She's just as repressed as Scott, which makes her "rehab" of my lover all the more interesting. That said, The Hellions were -- easily -- the character's turning point and most traumatic moment. Her repsonse here makes sense (unlike say, Manifest Destiny and Fraction taking his cues from it), because the flaw in this diamond is letting down her students. Much of her alpha bitch persona is to inspire them to be able to handle what they'll get thrown at them.

See, I think Emma was absolutely perfect during Whedon -- the compensation for turning Kitty into some ninja-less prime time startlet (grrr...)
It was the right blend of cattiness, ice queeniness and genuine emotion. Ellis has done well by her also.
My current Emma woes started with Manifest Destiny ... even Fraction started off strong with her (blending a bj reference with $500 stockings was brilliant)

AHH! That would be amazing. Telford and Domino have proven to be my favorite elements of X-Force. They both provide some witty, dark humor to the mix. I can just picture Vanisher porting in right in the middle of all the action and pulling a "hand-to-face WTF" moment.

Me too.
I thought this was great, and even though the Doug part featured the character I'm least interested in, I think it may have been my favorite. VERY horror themed, the coldness of Doug and things shown in his perspective gave an extremely creepy viewpoint to being dead/alive. Lot's of freaky, subtle stuff there. All 3 were fantastic though, love the artist on Carey's story. He draws an amazing Destiny.
The Lucky One

What I thought was a nice understated touch in Wells' portion was having Beef and Bevatron, the two Hellions who never knew Doug, be the ones doing most of the joking about his power. (Granted, Tarot was a bit of an odd choice to join in, given her crush on Doug... Roulette might've been slightly better, but whatever, it's minor.) In contrast, Jetstream comes across as almost compassionate, which given their history of having been students together briefly, makes sense. It's a subtle thing, but those are what make the difference between a good story and a great one.
What I did find a bit odd was what Doug was wearing. The Hellions and Pyro were all in their classic costumes, likely because those are what will have the greatest psychological impact on the X-Men (and, metatextually speaking, the readers). But Doug's wearing neither the New Mutants uniform he died in nor the suit he was buried in. Using the psychological logic, wouldn't seeing Doug in his old New Mutants garb be just as off-putting to the Muties as Emma seeing the Hellions in their costumes? Maybe there's a reason behind it, I just thought that was a little strange.

(And I thought Roulette had survived...not that the years of limbo would matter one way or the other)

Roulette didn't survive, but Tarot did. Well, she died, but then was mysteriously resurrected by King Bedlam and hinted that she owed him her new life. She was confirmed still powered and alive in the 198 Files one-shot, so I guess she must have died again sometime since then.

loved it. i can't wait to see who sticks around after. it would be interesting to see how they handle thunderbird, if he sticks around.
doug ramsey!!! <3 <3 <3 FINALLY. i love underrated characters. i love that they're going the complete opposite take on the value of his power set. i always knew he had it in him. i'm surprised at how happy i am to see the hellions, and leland! i started reading after he had died so i didn't get to know him as a character, but he brings back an old school vibe, so i am totally appreciating his return.
also, i hope mystique joins in on the fun. (come back rachel! some of us need to see selene to get her revenge on you too!)
ps-crain's art is so scary!!! i wish i had half his talent as a painter. i want him to stick around the x-books 4ever!

Happy Halloween to you too!
I'm still re-reading/enjoying Necrosha.
I was really taken with Doug's story, its interesting to see how the TO virus is affecting him. Ive been wondering if its the same for everyone (or if all the infected are handling it differently).
I was unsure on one part-
In Destiny's story she had a picture with Legion. Was that a vision or a flashback? Im not up on how Destiny died.

Legion killed her.
To be fair, he was being possessed by the Shadow King at the time.

Why would the Hellions be a threat now? They were routinely being beat by the New Mutants while they were young. The Sentinels killed them in like seconds. They've been dead since then. No further training or fighting experience since then. Since that time, the other mutants have all improved (at least should have) with all that they've been through, so it shouldn't even be close.
Were they all automatically been given upgrades?
