Labatory (Informally, lab) is a facility that provides controlled conditions in which research, experiments, and measurement may be performed.
"The mix tape is a list a quotations, a poetic form in fact: the cento is a poem made up of lines pulled from other poems. The new poet collects and remixes. Similarly an operation of taste, it is also cousin to the curious passion of the obsessive collector. Unable to express himself in 'pure' art, the collector finds himself in obsessive acquisition. Collecting is strangely hot and cold, passionate and calculating." Matias Viegener
I would like to begin this thread with the idea in mind that we could come here to work on, ask for assistance, advice, and put forTH all considerations for creating that great American art-form known as the mix-tape.
Mix-tapes were traditionally recorded on audio cassettes. We all know that the compact disc or the MP3 playlist is the contemporary method of choice when it comes to the format, but "mix-tape" is widely accepted.
Plenty of thought and time goes into constructing a mix: questions you should ask yourself is what theme am I going for, is there an overall mood i'm trying to create? , what tracks best suit this idea? , How will i be sequencing the songs.
Sometimes this can be easy, other times you shelf a mix for a few weeks after hitting a wall..
...and what better way to break through the walls when you find yourself trying to find a song that segues nicely after that awesome cover version of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" you just discovered, then to seek feedback from your peers.
the only caveat is, you've got to show us the finished product.

Nick Hornby's High Fidelity:
"To me, making a tape is like writing a letter — there's a lot of erasing and rethinking and starting again. A good compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do. You've got to kick off with a corker, to hold the attention (I started with "Got to Get You Off My Mind", but then realized that she might not get any further than track one, side one if I delivered what she wanted straightaway, so I buried it in the middle of side two), and then you've got to up it a notch, or cool it a notch, and you can't have white music and black music together, unless the white music sounds like black music, and you can't have two tracks by the same artist side by side, unless you've done the whole thing in pairs and...oh, there are loads of rules."

example of an awesome mix by Nick Hornsby:
from his book 31 Songs
Songbook (published in the United Kingdom as 31 Songs) is a 2002 collection of 26 essays by English writer Nick Hornby about songs and (more often) the particular emotional resonance they carry for him.
Song by song, Hornby delves into what makes music catchy or classic, and how it can come to play an integral role in a person's emotional life.
There are 31 songs, but only 26 essays; in a few instances, multiple songs are discussed within a single piece.
Teenage Fanclub - "Your Love Is the Place Where I Come From"
Bruce Springsteen - "Thunder Road"
Nelly Furtado - "I'm Like a Bird"
Led Zeppelin - "Heartbreaker"
Rufus Wainwright - "One Man Guy"
Santana - "Samba Pa Ti"
Rod Stewart - "Mama, You Been on My Mind"
Bob Dylan - "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" / The Beatles - "Rain"
Ani DiFranco - "You Had Time" / Aimee Mann - "I've Had It"
Paul Westerberg - "Born for Me"
Suicide - "Frankie Teardrop" / Teenage Fanclub - "Ain't That Enough"
The J. Geils Band - "First I Look at the Purse"
Ben Folds Five - "Smoke"
Badly Drawn Boy - "A Minor Incident" (from the About a Boy movie soundtrack)
The Bible - "Glorybound"
Van Morrison - "Caravan"
Butch Hancock and Marce LaCouture - "So I'll Run"
Gregory Isaacs - "Puff, the Magic Dragon"
Ian Dury and the Blockheads - "Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3" / Richard and Linda Thompson - "Calvary Cross"

The mix-tape is the greatest artform of the last 40-50 years, in my opinion. I love that so many authors and artists feel compelled to write about the form, too. I remember an 80s-era article in Playboy (possibly by Chuck Eddy, though I could be wrong) where he based his mixes on the sociopolitical breakdowns of the intended audience - Introverted Traditional, etc.
The best advice I got out of that article was that you should always finish the tape with something offbeat - a soundbite from a movie, etc. Something to cleanse the palate before the next tape, basically.

Art Of The Mix's Taxonomy of the Mix (http://www.artofthemix.org/community/blog/page/Taxonomy-of-the-Mix.aspx)Jesus, I think that one covers them all. This was a favourite of mine back in my college-DJ days:
the imaginary concert tape- limited to only one artist, you program the ideal setlist that you would love to see them play... because it was a lot easier to mix two live tunes together - the audience noise in between did all the heavy lifting.

And when I'm here, I'll make you a mixed tape.

Hope that's okay. It's technically a mix CD, and I made it for the Traitor Game.
My character is Italian, therefore explaining why my mix has so many Italian acts in it.

I should also add there's no specific theme to my mix-tape, except songs that were running through my head as I was playing her.
Though certain songs have significance; "Mi Fido Di Te" (I Trust You), for example, is what she said to another player before taking a leap of faith.
"Putting Out Fires" was chosen because the lyrics articulate her complicated relationship with her friends, and "Il Mio Canto Libero" (My Free Song) was added to the list, because to me, it reflects her desire to find escape from turmoil, and begin anew (if you get your hand on a translation of the song, it would make more sense.)
I'll probably explain in more detail why I chose these songs for Helena Bertinelli/Huntress later, but right now, I'm tired.

I learned most of those tips the hard way. Nobody else in my social circles has ever been into doing mix tapes, so for the longest time, I was just figuring this stuff out on my own. I rarely had access to an equalizer, and never a mixer. Even after making over a hundred mix tapes, I have still learned some great tips from this thread. Like ending with something offbeat to cleanse the palate... good stuff.
Because of my isolated experiences, I rarely bother anymore with working with titles or lyrics to suit a theme, because sometimes there is a serious disconnect between the two. For example, I'm Not in Love, by 10cc is one helluva a makeout tune, but if the girl listens to the lyrics, it can be a mood-killer. And just about any New Order song has a vast gulf between music and lyrics.
So I'm more about the music fitting together from song to song. For example, putting P.J. Harvey's song Down by the Water right before Portishead's song Numb sounds really good to my ears. Part of it is that the two songs together sustain a certain mood, and part of it is that the first song drops abruptly into silence which works like a beat in the surreal opening notes of the second.
Other times, I'm looking for an interesting transition, almost like a narrative. So maybe I go from Handsome Boy Modeling School's song The Truth (laid-back R&B/lounge... Morcheeba-like) to Delire Et Passion, by Gabin, which sounds like it could be a cool song for a funeral in a James Bond movie.
So my favorite mix tape bands tend to be ones with a lot of variety to their sound: the Kinks, the Beatles, dada. And definitely performers who work on the boundaries between genres, for flexibility in transitions from one sound to another, from one mood to another.

i'm digging the songs you've put together. Has a certain something to it.
Lot of songs on here you can either listen to them solo in reflection, or have playing at at a bar during night with a friend or two or three (bourbon).

okay, - so after i read the last trade for 100 bullets, i was inspired to make a mix of songs that had a certain feel that you could liken to one of the characters or a scene within the series. I knocked out a good deal of it, - but somewhere along the way i shelved it.
So, this is my work in progress for a 100 Bullets Soundtrack
A need a few mores songs ,and I need to determine how long it's going to be , and start pruning 2 or 3 songs here or there, and maybe adding 1 in the process. I need to consider some more songs for wylie.
Right now, - there's no sequence. more or less i've got a big block of granite here.
****don't want to spoil anything for anybody*****
Joseph Arthur & The Lonely People - "Temporary People" (Jack Daw - mainly while he was binging and contemplating with the attache)
Black Keys - "10 a.m. Automatic" (Jack Daw - bar scene)

Os Mutantes - "A Minha Menina" (Lono, in Miami, before and during his sit-down w/ Graves

Push Button Objects - "360 degrees" Lil' Hughes

Phil Collins - "In The Air Tonight" (one of the best scenes in the series, - where the girl from issue 19 takes her revenge on Lono)
Pixies - "Where is My Mind" (starts about the time Remi jumps from the high-rise hospital)
Black Angels - "Prodigal Son" (agents en route to the climactic throw-down with the trust)
Black Mountain - "Wucan" not for sure what part it would be in, but this is the kind of song for a montage where when a group of the agents could be travelling to one of the many locales
DJ Shadow - "Six Days" - (the Trust, at the Medici house)
Tv on The Radio - "Staring At the Son" (roll to credits)

I was always about "More bag for your buck". I'd make a list with 3 times the ammount of songs that could fit on a tape that I dug. From there, I'd get all of their track lengths. Then I'd do the math : 90 minute tape = 45 minutes per side. From there, I'd fit the most songs from the aforementioned list as possible into said 45 minute time span. From there, I'd organize the 45-minute-list into the best possible flow and order.
Man, i miss making mix tapes.....

For hopefully two more years, I will be driving a car with a tape deck and no CD player, so I still make mix tapes once in a while. These days, to make the process easier, I do the mix first on my computer, then burn it on to a couple of CDs, then record from those CDs onto the tape.
Unfortunately, my nice bookshelf stereo lost the ability to play CDs early this year, and the current models generally don't include tape decks any more. I bought one that did have a tape deck, but the recording quality is kind of shitty. That was okay for a punk mix tape, but otherwise, no. I'm saving up money for a downpayment on a house in late 2010/early 2011, so I'm just trying to work with what I have for now.

I've done the "DVD to stereo" recording before and it does work...BUT....every time I've done it, the volume has been a bit lower than normal.
I have a large Aiwa stereo with Dolby 5.0 surround sound and a seperate 50 watt/12" sub that I line my televsion out to. I got the staereo and began doing that around 2000 or so. That said, I used to put quotes from my wife's favorite films between songs on her mixes, and they were almost always a bit lower than normal (the stereo itself had a built-in "record volume" so, regardless of how loud you were listening to the music being recorded, it was always recorded at a set level).
There was a time when I was making a new mix tape a week, but it's been years. As far as mix CDs go, it's just too "easy". As lame as it sounds, you don't have to "live" through the tape and get a feel for it as you're recording it. That said, CDRs do come off as a surprise because, honestly, most of the time I'm not really sure how it's going to flow and really work until I pop it in and give it a listen, end-to-end.

I keep track of the math as I go, using an excel spreadsheet. It's not as bad as it sounds, I use the same spreadsheet songlist to make a cover for the tape.
I don't know if they still make audio tapes. I saw that Best Buy and Target were both steadily cutting down on selection a few years back, so the last time I bought any, I bought a 10-pack that I haven't used up yet. And I picked some unopened Maxell Gold II's at Goodwill a couple of years ago for cheap. I suppose I should make these final mixes really count if they're not selling tapes anymore.

Same here, except I'm using Media Monkey. My girlfriend is using iTunes on the same computer, so by using a separate application to access the same MP3 files, we can maintain our own separate ratings and favorites. There is some overlap in our taste in music, but it's probably only about 20%.

I made a few mixtapes back in the day that crossfade Brak and Space Ghost clips. Some were metal, others were progressive house and drum and bass, and others were just whatever the hell I felt like creating on that particular day.
I guess the best tapes/CD's came when I was truly trying to attempt something fun or great as opposed to just...leftfield.
EDIT: Oh, found one (all tracks are crossfaded):
1. Unknown Ambient Track (might be by Tosca)
2. Nine Inch Nails- Wish
3. Unknown Ambient Track (I seriously wish that I remembered this artist)
4. Unknown Ambient Track (ditto)
5. Electronic- Disappointed
6. BT- Transway

I broke a rule with having more than one song by the same artist,- it couldn't be avoided, - the songs are that great, and they flowed too well to cast-off.

My girlfriend has teased me about using old music in the mixes I make for her, so for her next mix, I went out of my way to stick to modern music. Ok, I cheated and used a couple of old songs, but I'm pretty sure she will like the one from Peanuts. No matter what, she will like some of it and dislike some of it, and at least I think that it's a good mix with a lot of stuff she hasn't heard before.
Ready Steady Go / Paul Oakenfold

Howy, I've got a few possibilities for your mix:
Treetop Flyer, by Stephen Stills
Vague Directions, by James [edit] McMurtry
Showdown at Big Sky, by Robbie Robertson
Liquor, Beer and Wine, by Reverend Horton Heat
Especially that last song, which has one of my all-time favorite lines:
"I drink until I can't see, and I wonder where you are."

Some very good mixes on here.
I spend a lot of my day listening to the iPod, so I've made a ton of mixes on odd themes - "The Secret Songs" (Optimistic Views of Space Exploration), "Cowpunk" (dark-themed country western songs), "Office Droning" (Mindlessly peppy music to improve office productivity) ,"Poe(try)" (songs about and inspired by Edgar Allen Poe), "Monster Midway" (Carny songs), "Post Dream Mornings" (The hazy feeling after you wake up after a significant dream), "Comix" (songs based on comic book characters), "Proto-Punk" (pre-Ramones punk rock), "Noir Drive" (nighttime driving music that makes you feel like you're in a film noir), "England" (songs about life in modern England), all sorts of travel and band and holiday and season and workout mixes, mixes based on different years of my life and people I've known. If I ever develop dementia, I could probably use my iPod to recreate my lifetime memories.
Over the last few years, I've started maintaining a yearly musical log - chronologically placing music tracks, that reminds me of things that happened during the year, clips from new shows and movies, etc. The 2009 playlist is about 24 hours long, and I've been listening to it over the past week.
I used to do all this on cassettes, then CDs, now iPod...the MP3 list lacks the permanence of the earlier technologies and tends to encourage fiddling, but I kind of like that.
I have no artistic talents whatsoever - can barely draw a straight line and completely tone deaf - so making mixes is the closest I come to an artistic outlet.
Anyone else do these kind of theme mixes? Or is this just a form of OCD on my part?

My brother's friend asked him to make a mix of "old-people music", by which he meant rock from the '60s and '70s, or with that kind of aesthetic. My brother passed it on to me, knowing that I'd have a lot more fun with the project
Anyway, given the fairly broad parameters, this is what I came up with. I had to cut a few off to make it fit on a CD and it doesn't flow quite the way I wanted it to now, but I still think it's fairly good. I tried to avoid stuff you'd be likely to hear on the radio, but sometimes it couldn't be helped.
1. The Village Green Preservation Society-The Kinks
2. Straight Shooter-The Mamas and the Papas
3. Highway Chile-The Jimi Hendrix Experience
4. The Ballad of El Goodo-Big Star
5. Hey Bo Diddley-Bo Diddley

So what's the rule/general consensus on different bands with the same lead singer? I'm wondering if having both The Hold Steady and Lifter Puller on the current mix I'm making is too much Craig Finn for one mix.

I'm wondering if having both The Hold Steady and Lifter Puller on the current mix I'm making is too much Craig Finn for one mix.I'd say it depends on how the songs sound when you put them back-to-back. If the bands sound too much alike, then I'd be tempted to avoid it.
The acceptable exception, though, is the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson.

I can't stop "cheating" when it comes to the first and last songs. They're usually the first/last tracks on the album that they came from.
Edit: On second thought, maybe ending a mix that I'm sending to a girl with "Train in Vain" might not be the best idea.

So what would you say is the most crucial, most basic skill in mix-taping (tape-mixing?)? I'm gonna say it's the one-two punch, because that's the atomic base of mixtapes.

I've always found multiple songs by the same artist on a mix particularly irksome. Nothing says "I don't care" quite like not taking the time to find another song that fits the same space.

Less "one-two punch" and more of just a general ear for flow.

Less "one-two punch" and more of just a general ear for flow.I think my rationale last night was that a mix starts with a pair of songs, but flow doesn't really enter the picture till you're farther into it. I'll certainly agree, though, that flow is in the top 2-3 criteria.

wshaun, what about the idea of a sampler-style tape or cd? Then you can have several tracks by a few different artists--though I would still avoid putting two in a row by the same artist. You could still have a theme. For instance, I might make a metal mix with Helloween, Therion and Manowar...or an 80's mix with Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes and Sandra. With the first one, there's a lot to choose from...Helloween's been coming out with albums since the early 80's, and they've had three different singers, as well as other lineup changes. Therion went from a death/black/thrash band to orchestral metal with covers of Abba and Thin Lizzy thrown in. The sound would be very diverse...even if you just took a single band and created your own "best-of" mix.

20. The Mountain Goats - Alpha Incipiens (1:36)
The Eliot pieces are him reading Prufrock. If I really want to work hard at this, I think I might add some of my own guitar noise/feedback to the Eliot bits.
