Nickelodeon buys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Nick now owns ninja turtles.

"Disney buys Marvel, so it only stands to reason that Nickelodeon would pick up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

But Nick didn’t just buy the old TV shows and movies, they bought the property in its entirety, including the merchandising rights and the ability to make new series and TV shows.

MTV Networks acquired the global rights to the Turtles from The Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment for roughly $60 million dollars. Nickelodeon plans to develop a new CG-animated TMNT television series to premiere in 2012 and, in partnership with Paramount Pictures, a new Ninja Turtles feature film for 2012.

One of the most popular kids’ television programs of the 1980s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as an independent comic book. Note, the current network TMNT animated series now running on CW4Kids Saturday morning will continue to air through Aug. 31, 2010."

interesting. and on a side note, CartoonBrew better watch out from stealing headlines from Reuters from now on...but anyways.

I don't think Laird would sell his interest in the property and I wonder how and/or if it will affect the Tales comic book that comes out now. To have all things TMNT turn totally to kids again might make some people more money, but it would also suck. As some of the adult type violence is some of the best (when done right) things about the Turtles.

What I'm surprised at is the lack of buzz surrounding this announcement. Where have all the TMNT fans gone?

And what will it mean for future reprints of the series? I still haven't been able to get my hands on that new collected edition.

I remember seeing an old Turtles comic about when the whole turtle media storm was begginning and seeing one of 'em wearing a Metallica T-Shirt back when Metallica was just the underground band that started a new style of playing.

See, that's what Nickelodeon should show the kids. The real beer-drinking turtles listening to old Metallica albums. Kids need good influence.
