I'll go with the Kennedy assassination for the beginning of the 60's, but, as for the end, I would put it a few months earlier at the first oil boycott, which signaled the end of easy, cheap transportation which was a key to the abundance of the decade that allowed the open lifestyle.

But that's just me.

Well... that'd probably be the social '60s, which started with the arrival of The Beatles on American shores and what you said sounds like a good end point for it. The political '60s, it's Kennedy to Nixon. (Or, as Bowie once sang, one magical movement from Kether to Malkuth...)
