Did anyone buy or rent the recently released Sgt Frog, on DVD?

I am soooooo, well, pissed off. This is such a great show, and the subbing if fine on the DVD - but they screwed up the dubbed version for badly.

See, instead of just dubbing the dialogue with what they said in the Japanese version - they decided to add their own little jokes to the script.

For example, when the mother comes home early and announces that her artist finished early. In the dubbed version she comes home saying her artist works quicker without pants, or something like that.

This is just so damn insulting to the fans. There is nothing in that show that needs to be amped up, or made more funny - it's great as is. So why did they feel the need to change the script like that?

And, if you're asking, no - this isn't a case of changing the dialogue so it fits better with lip movements. That's perfectly fine in dubbing, as long as they try to say true to the intent.

Here, they just disregarded the intent of the show - even changing character's personalities. The announcer, for example, is very stoic and straight forward. They completely changed him so he's some disinterested viewer.

I can tell you right now - I'm not watching this show if it ever comes on TV. Again - the subbed version is fine - but in general I'm going to just read the Manga.

I also wrote about it here on my blog

That's one damn lucky artist.

In all seriousness, though, I'll withdraw judgement until I watch the dub myself. That kind of changes are always a risky bet, depending on the individual viewer's liking for the featured added humor. Like in the early Negima volumes, where a lot of the changed jokes were great but messed the characters' actual natures.
