What's your oldest, first printing (and not in trade form) comic that you own?

Mine was until recently Fantastic Four #150 (Quicksilver & Crystal's wedding which is crashed by Ultron) but I recently got Amazing Spider-Man #66 featuring Mysterio.

I used to own Avengers #9: The Coming of Wonder Man. I let a "friend" look after my collection and he pinched them.

I could've bought a copy Amazing Spider-Man #8 with no cover and several pages missing for 10 cents but I didn't. Dumb move looking back on it. I don't know what the oldest book I actually have is though.

Dr Strange 169 (1968)

The Champions - all 17 issues (1975)

There may be a few more from the late 70's but I think those are the oldest I have in my collection.

If I go with outside Marvel it would be Justice League of America #1 (1960)

Avengers #21, the introduction of Power Man (not Luke Cage). The lower right corner of the cover is torn off and the pages are yellowing. One of the first comics that I ever owned was a reprint of this issue (Marvel Triple Action #15), but I eventually managed to find the original for cheap at a garage sale.

Tales to Astonish #98 from, i believe 1968. Im only 15, so coming by some oldies is pretty hard for me. But its in amazing condition, i was surprised.

I had (actually my brother does) FF #33, the one with a Kirby photo experimental cover with Namor and Attuma. Daredevil #7, the famous battle with Sub-Mariner. That one was weird because it was in a spinner rack and I think it was not even the current issue. The first FF we got was in trade, FF #39 and #40.

Got that one too. What I thought was cool is that a couple of years ago, Marvel reprinted that and they even gave it a sort of faked aged look to it. It fooled my brother when I showed it to him.

This is the first comic that I ever bought (ok, a parent or grandparent probably bought it for me, ha) that I still have in my collection:

I have a few other old issues of The Invaders that I've kept over the years, but #19 is the oldest I have.

A lot of cover-less WWII-era books I got from my grandparent's attic. Some really weird ones, a lot of generic war books, and one or two Howling Commando issues. Next oldest is a couple of 70's issues, I think the oldest is the Spiderman right after Norman dies and Luke Cage is hired to track down Spidey. Oldest as in the first one I ever bought is the Classics reprint of X-men 150, the cover is hanging on by a staple and it's beat to hell, but it's still my favorite. Such a bad-ass cover, too.

I own some really old Daredevils. Like #3 or 4. Horrible condition though. Found them in a box when I moved to Albany for a few months. They were apparently one of my uncles. Also has some Spider-Man but don't remember the exact issues. They look like they've been nibbled on and shit. Highly upsetting when I discovered them.

mournblade94

I think my oldest would be Journey into Mystery #84 (Second issue of Thor).

The crowning issue of my collection is Avengers #4 (I did trade Giant Size XMEN #1 for it). According to all the guides it seems like an even trade, though this year #4 jumped in price a bit because of the Cap storyline.

I do have a few 1st appearances though:

Hawkeye, Black Widow, Venom, and Titanium Man off the top of my head.

THAT FF#1 beats my collection:) I think Hulk #2 does as well.

But is FF#1 older than Hulk 2 or Journey 2?

I think it is older yes. 99% sure.

I bought an old issue of Patsy Walker from the 1954 for my wife last year, but that isn't what I think of when I think of Marvel.

http://www.atlastales.com/covers/5148t.jpg

For the 'real' Marvel, my oldest is Avengers #1 from 1963.

http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/avengers/1-1.jpg

I bought my first issue of Avengers around 1984 (#234...

http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/avengers/234-1.jpg

It took me 10 years, but I eventually finished the entire run (and stil counting...)

coconutphone
10-29-2009, 10:53 AM
Wow the entire run! Impressive.

Are you still getting the book? Which monthlies do you get for it now (New? Mighty? Dark? Initiative?)

I get all the Avengers titles... right down to Marvel Adventures Avengers.

I need to go to Avengers Anonymous. :)

Seriously though, I'm glad I like the books right now because I don't know if I could get myself to not buy them, even if I didn't like them. :)

Actually, as a good example, I bought that Fusion mini with the Avengers and Thundersolts teaming with some Top Cow teams or some thing.

It was wretched.

since you are a pro. it might be interesting to ask what is your favorite issue of any of the books

rpriske
10-29-2009, 11:56 AM
Favourite is tough, because my favourite issues are not going to be the 'best' issues. They are going to be ones that resonate with me, probably at the time I was reading them etc.

What jumps out is the Korvac Saga. Jim Shooter was th ewriter and he wrote a story where one by one, Avengers were vanishing. It turned into a fight between the remaining team (about four people were left, if memory serves) fighting the Collector. It turns out that the Collector was 'collecting' Avengers so they could face 'Michael', who turned out to be a god-level powered Korvac.

I loved it.

I also really liked the Masters of Evil story by Roger Stern where Zemo led a team to take over Avengers Mansion.

The arc around and leading up to the Vision taking over the world's computers was good as well.

On ther other end of the spectrum, there were the issues where the Avengers faced some sort of demon with a big hand with teeth on the ends. {shudder} I think it was by Len Kaminksi.

Awful.

Oh, and the Crossing. Terrible.

rpriske
10-29-2009, 11:58 AM
Oh, around 1986 I got my copies of the Korvac Saga signed by Shooter, so that is cool, too.

Had to double check 'cause I wasn't entirely sure when it came out in relation to some of the other early silver age issues I own, but the winner would be Fantastic Four #5 (first appearance of Doom). Clocking in at July of 1962.

My collection is frustrating for me. The only #1 I own from that era of the Silver Age (when Marvel and all it's heroes made their first appearances) is Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos (May of 1963). The rest all start a little further down the line. Avengers #2. X-Men #4. Fantastic Four #5 etc. etc. For some reason I seem to rarely take the plunge and get those #1 issues. Well... money would be a reason I guess... Condition too. If I'm going to spend the amount of money it takes to get Avengers #1 of X-Men #1, they've got to be in good quality, and those seem to pop up more and more rarely these days.
