January previews say Cap. Atom is coming back. I've lost track - how is he doing that after 52? And what actually happened to his gang at the end of 52?

Sorry to be clueless here.

He's been in another dimension, brainwashed into fighting the good people as the revolt against some evil dictator magic witch lady. It's all in the Action Comics back-up I haven't really been paying much attention to.

I think the basic story is....

52/CA: Armagedon/Battle for Bludhaven/Countdown to FC/all the Countdown Tie-ins happened.

It seems that the Rucka and Robinson are going to have the Monarch Suit (from B4B) be a corrupting influnance (ala Desad) and that post Final Crisis an inert Captain Atom reappeared on our earth and was confiscated by Project 7734 (run by Gen Lane).

So far from the Action Back-ups, we know that Lane traded a NOW brainwashed CA to Mirabi(sp?), who is from "another dimension", in return for her help in destorying the Kryptonians' reputation.

(I think....)

Thanks - but it is kind of a weak fate for someone who was so powerful and crucial to that Countdown, 52 story line.

Anything that helps wash away the taint of Countdown is welcome when it comes to Cap. I would even settle for the old "evil clone" move at this point. So far I have been enjoying the Action Comics back up staring him.

hopefully the awesome backup in action will fix him and Natasha Irons

Poor Captain Atom gets abused a lot in-story.

But he's shaking it off, slowly. His return to prominence is happening. The Monarch influence, whatever the hell it is, has gone (for now ... I wonder if he gets breached again if he'll return as Monarch again, and then if Monarch gets breached again if he'll return AGAIN as Captain Atom).

As it goes though, it's not much work for him to annihilate an entire Minas Tirith-sized medieval city of archers, soldiers, sorcerers and ogre mercenaries.

I bet we see him beat the snot out of Atlas some day in the future.

Heck I even liked the in story mention/history of Breach.

couple of curious things (one of which may get resolved relatively quickly)

1) status of Major Force

2) how cap feels about Bombshell?

Good questions, both.

Force has also been seen recently in JSA as part of the super-villain pow-wow attack on the JSA, probably hired mercenary style. I hope Atom smacks the crap out of him next issue. Side-note ... the same jaw-dropping way CAFU draws Captain Atom translates to Major Force.

I wonder if he even knows about Bombshell. As Monarch he probably did, but he doesn't exactly remember much of what he did as Monarch, except that it was very bad, and ended with Superboy-Prime effing both him, and Universe-51, up.

Other stuff I would like... but probably isn't ripe for the Action Back-ups given its ties to the New Krypton story..

In the beginning of his story he was a Military man first, hero second, would like to see him intereact with thhe Shield and Magog.

I totally and utterly agree with this. Captain Atom is awesome, and I look forward to when the back-ups at DC begin to be collected, because I'm really looking forward to checking this one out. He got railroaded in Countdown arguably more than anyone, and that's saying something, as a lot of characters got railroaded in that debacle.

That'll come down the line. Right now, Rucka and Robinson wanted to have a positive military figure in the Superman books and who better than one of his old allies.

I must say, I am entertained at how the current take on Captain Atom is being influenced by Breach, that short lived reboot-turned-own-series from 2004. Captain Atom is now a bit amnesiac, and has done some universe hopping. Oh, and Tim Zanetti's son is now part of Project 7734. Nice.

Man I miss that series.
