DC UNIVERSE: ORIGINS TP
Written by Mark Waid, Scott Beatty and Len Wein
Art by various
Cover by Alex Ross
Collecting the origins of over fifty characters from Animal Man to Zatanna, including Batman, Wonder Woman, The Joker and many more, from DC’s hit weekly series 52 and COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS as well as several first seen online, featuring the work of some of comics’ top talents!
Advance-solicited; on sale February 17 • 144 pg, FC, $14.99 US

FINALLY. It's not all those 52 and COUNTDOWN origin back-ups (72 at most, but since there are a few credit pages it'll be less than that) but it's something.

And we get a KOBRA trade too, but it's the first issue of the 1970's series, that series' conclusion from DC SPECIAL SERIES #1 and some newer stuff. A collection of the entire 1970's series would be cool, but this is almost as decent.

Huh, Outsiders looks kind of interesting. I might hear what the word is on Didio's writing is like, though, since his Metal Men stuff didn't make me vomit with rage but it didn't really push my buttons, either.

Eek! Blackest Night is going to absolutely kill me come January, and hot off the heels of Christmas, no less. I'll probably have to start saving right now.

On another note, I'm really not too sure of Fabry's Magog covers. I don't think they're bad, and I'd even say #3 and #4 are actually quite good, but they're also awfully mundane looking; they don't jump out at you at all. For a new series like Magog, I just think you need flashier cover art to grab the attention of people surfing the racks who otherwise wouldn't pay the book a second look, because I doubt either the titular character, Giffen, or Porter are going to be able to initially hook enough readers all on their own, unfortunately.

I'm going to wind up spending a lot of money in January so I shouldn't complain, but I still wish there was a complete creative team/direction housecleaning for the Super, Bat, Justice League and WW books. DC's core superhero books are so unappealing to me right now.

Great month for titles, very bad for the wallet. I don't think I have ever purchased more than twenty titles in one month, but there is always time for a first.

If it takes green + one other color to shred Black Lanterns, Parralax-possesion would certainly be a dagnasty way to go about it.

I'm glad you brought this up, Sean

Guys. Seriously. For anyone that hasn't read DC Special Series #1 which concluded the original 1977 Kobra story (as Sean points out)... YOU. MUST. READ. THIS. STORY.

Not only does it feature some great Mike Nasser artwork, a fantastic guest-appearance by Batman, but it has the creepiest-ass ending of any story I've read in my 30+ years of comic reading. Creepy creepy creepy.

Ugh, I'm confused. There isn't a single book I'd spend my hard earned cash on.

Man, comics suck these days (sigh).

Not sure what you're looking for, then. This is the best DC's been for, I reckon, about the last 10 years.

I disagree. DC is milking Blackest Night for all its worth (granted, Green Lantern seems to be holding up as a solid title), with lame mini-series across the board.

There doesn't seem to be any cohesive vision or interest in producing reader-friendly stories starring the icons of the company. The top two franchises currently feature books without the main character, which is pretty insane from a marketing stand point. Talent stays on a book for 6 issues (if a collector is lucky), usually replaced by sub-pro talent who can churn out the work on time.

Don't get me wrong, Marvel is in the same boat; Dark Reign is bloated, been done before, and boring.

DC has always struggled creatively and with market share (until Identity Crisis, which set the current mess in motion); I'd argue that they've only had a few interesting books since the Silver Age.

Believe it or not, I'm a DC fan to the core; that's why the current garbage being flung at consumers upsets me so much.

I dunno, have some of you guys complaining about the icons tried Wonder Woman recently? I started picking it up 2/3 months ago and have enjoyed it so far (first time touching a WW comic ever).

I also love many of the current Batman titles, you can even get your Bruce fix, if you must, in Batman Confidential.

One of the problems of DC (and Marvel as well) is watering down of their product through multiple titles. How many Batman titles do we really need?

I feel sorry for any new comic book reader trying to figure out what to try, with wildly different portrayals of a franchise character with no clear continuity (and mostly lousy artwork to boot, IMO).

But then again, comics today aren't catered towards new readers, they're aimed squarely at the folk who mindlessly pick up titles month after month (as they have done so for years), hoping they'll eventually 'get good'.

Yes it's unfortunate, but do you see that changing anytime soon?

gwor
10-23-2009, 07:54 AM
Unfortunately not. Hey, I don't blame the Big Two, they're publishing what they think the consumers want because folk continue to support mediocre titles with their wallets.

My point is, instead of buying the same title month after month to maintain a run, or buying lower quality books because it's a 'habit', consumers could make an effort to track down interesting, quality, indy books. As a quck example, Invincible and Godland are far superior to just about anything DC churns out, IMO. If folk buy less copies of DC and Marvel hackwork, maybe they'll get the message and strive to produce better material.
