View Full Version : Green Lantern Celebration

I'd like to take you all back in time for a moment to April of 2004.
At this time Green Lantern v3 has just ended and a Wizards article was released in issue #152.
Newsarama broke the story to announce that Hal Jordan was being brought back.
http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=12318
Meh. I liked Kyle more because he wouldn't have gotten a ring under normal circumstances. He was more of a regular ass guy than Hal as he wasn't even a fearless pilot or full of will or anything. Yet without training or qualification he learned how to use the ring better than the average lantern and earned his place in the corps through hard work. He even tried to give the guardians a fresh new start and room for personality. Despite losing his place as Ion he's still an honor gaurd.
Hal is alright too though. He seems boring a lot of the time but he's cool when he's rebelling against orders to do things in a more straightforward manner, and when he's having fun just because he loves danger, flying, and wild thrills. John used to seem better than Hal about breaking rules though if only because he broke rules more subtly and didn't fix things straightforward but rather tried to fix the systems behind the problems rather than the problem itself. He isn't written that way anymore but he'll always be like that in my heart.
Guy loves thrills just like Hal but he's much more wild, carefree, and rowdy about everything so he's more fun. He gets shit on a lot but he just puts on a grin and punches his problems, and you can always rely on him in a pinch.
Now that I've gotten that out the way, yea GL sure has come along. John is getting some story to himself but it feels too much like he's inconsequential and being changed into the animated Justice league version of himself. For a guy who solves systems and reads between the lines he's getting tossed around quite a bit. Hopefully he'll finally put Xanshi and Fatality behind him and start being Mosaic awesome again.
The different corps for the blackest night have been cool, though some of their abilities need to be fleshed out more, like how hope is self empowering and shouldn't even really need constructs to be awesome on screen, or how yellow has no special abilities, an artificial advantage that can be overcome or unprogrammed entirely, and one major weakness to the mere presence of the blue. I also don't like at all how the Indigo corps came into the story, especially with the shit they pulled in Tales of the Corps. I didn't expect them to be able to use their compassion energy offensively as constructs on its own either. I thought they HAD to use the power of other lights to do shit offensively.
I look forward to what GL becomes after the blackest night with all the supposed changes that have been planned to take place permanently. I don't really like how the emotional spectrum as a whole equals the origin of life itself. I prefer it to stay purely about emotions and how they AFFECT life rather than how they ARE life, thats stupid and limiting to the idea of life. But aside from that its pretty nifty.
Now...set aside the immediate reactions, the Hal vs Kyle drama, and consider for a moment one thing.
The last piece of that article:
>>Didio went on to say that in his eyes, Green Lantern should become the #3 franchise from DC, behind Superman and Batman.
Back then we didn't even know if Hal Jordan could even be redeemed from the path of villainy he took.
Here we are, 5 years later. We've witnessed Rebirth, were rocked by Sinestro Corps War, and Blackest Night is blowing everything away. There are two GL series running now, often with off shoots, one shots, and minis. Take that all in and consider that statement from April of 2004. Consider just how much work and planning has gone into all this and where we are now.
Just...wow.
Well done guys.
I think this calls for a celebration

The GL mythos has come far since Rebirth.
It should be #3 in DC. Classic science fiction fun.
Johns and DC should be very proud for what they've achieved with the GLverse.
The Black Lantern Corps puts its ringed fists up in salute to the rebirth of the mythos:
http://media.comicmix.com/media/2008/09/29/black-lantern-corps-large.jpg
The Blackest Night falls from the skies,
The darkness grows as all light dies,
We crave your hearts and your demise,
By my black hand--The dead shall rise!

No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!

I remember when Wizard made the big announcement, I was a Marvel fan back then after swearing off DC comics because of ET. Honestly it was like being a kid again it made me want to go back and check out everything that had happened with Hal and the DCU during that time. And once I came back with Rebirth #1 i've become a bigger fan of DC than I was when I was younger and it's all thanks to Hal's return. It truly is a great time to be a GL fan, it seems like now everyon realises why this is such a great mythology and Hal and the rest of the GLC are finally getting the props they should have been getting it's a celebration b*tches.

I came on after Rebirth but that was only because I didn't know about it. I read my Dad's old silver age comics and thought GL was the coolest character ever. When the JL cartoon stared and I just thought, WHAT? not knowing about John but I quickly grew to love him too. Of course I didn't realize Hal was evil/dead then. Then after Rebirth was over I saw it caught up with GL and a few others books and that's how I started reading comics regularly.
GO GREEN LANTERN!!!

It's an epic sci-fi mythos on par with Star Wars, I say. And it's great that we have all the human GL's together at once - Hal, Guy, Kyle, and even occasional appearances by John. :P
I love Green Lantern's rogues gallery, they're my favorite next to Batman's villains. Sinestro, the Manhunters, Star Sapphire, Hector Hammond, Black Hand, Shark... GL just has some of the coolest sci-fi comic villains out there!

I've always been and always will be a huge GL fan. The only time I ever really got uptight and pissy about the book was during Emerald Twilight (for obvious reasons), but I stayed with it, loved most of Kyle's stories and kept hoping that one day Hal would be back, not crazy-ass Parallax, but where he rightfully belonged. And though it took twelve years, DC came through. Back in college in the late 80's and early 90's, I made a variant GL Corps uniform in one of my theater costuming classes (along with Rorschach, Nite Owl and Comedian outfits, plus my own character creations), created plenty of art projects using a GL-inspired motifs, and have continued to collect just about every piece of GL-related swag I could find, money permitting. I'm a fan, but I'm not crazy enough to spend THAT much loot on a regular basis, and besides, I figure the kids will want to eat occasionally. Last weekend, I went into my local comic shop, where I've been a faithful customer since 1988 and there are still several posters hanging on the walls of Green Lantern drawings I've done over the years, and lo and behold, Mike M, the owner hands me this bag and says, "You're hated around here now, but you of all people can appreciate these". I looked into the bag and inside were all the prototype rings from Blackest Night. It was a good day to be a Green Lantern fan.

what a crap-tastic villain he was, only able to kill a single GL. hal mowed through the entire corps and brought upon its destruction, and kyle manages to take out jack t. chance. any way you cut it, kyle is n00b-commander supreme next to hal jordan.

A few things, you really think what i posted was porn? because if you do you have some very weak standards, they're very tasteful cheesecake drawings of the one of the chief female green lanterns & guy Gardner in a female form. All i wanted to do was to avoid this thread from becoming another insipid Kyle vs Hal debate, which I state we shouldn't have on the very first page. They are all Green Lanterns, if you really want to argue who's "the" green lantern, either take it somewhere & start a new thread or look up Alan scott , "the" green lantern. once again can we please leave it at that.
GL Celebration let's hope Johns keeps turning out more epic space-cop drama for the fans.

What's wrong with gray hair? Seriously.
That was the breaking point for me and Rebirth -- the need to explain away, in continuity, why Hal had a bit of white around the temples and how it completely totally wasn't his fault. I'd be hard-pressed to even imagine a more nitpicky thing than that.

Depends how you wanna play it.
I'd be tempted to say Waid, but he's more character-based and current GL is definitely plot-driven.

Growing up I pretty much fell into the trap of "Marvel rules, DC sucks" even though I couldn't really base that judgment on anything real and the fact that I really liked the Batman cartoon. Because of that I never really got into anything by DC (with the exception of the Chuck Dixon's Robin, which I followed for a while) over the years and didn't put to much thought into why. I mean I knew the basics of Batman and Superman and my interest in those characters could be sated with the occasional TPB. However, I'd always thought the Green Lantern was visually interesting when I saw him on the cover of something. So about a year ago I'm in the LCS picking up my Spider-Man and X-Men stuff and I start talking to someone in a Green Lantern t-shirt about the character. From that conversation I was left with these "facts": 1)Green Lantern is awesome, 2)Hal Jordan is the best and coolest GL, 3)I should be reading it.
So I picked up Rebirth and found out that those 3 things were indeed true. Since then I've pretty much devoured all the trades of the main GL title as fast as my money and time would allow and now I'm working my way through the GLC trades as well. Not to mention the fact that I'm now much more interested in the DCU as a whole. I'm currently reading as many DC titles as I am Marvel, which I never really considered happening before. So yeah, kudos to Geoff Johns and DC for putting out a kick ass story and keeping it moving full speed ahead.

Some people go gray early. I never saw it as a bad thing, especially for Hal who has actually seen combat before becoming GL -- he should be a tad on the older side compared to, say, Batman.
Waid's version of Hal is one of my favorite interpretations of the character.
I dug it too, but what I meant is that Waid's stories tend to be more character-focused, whereas Sinestro Corps War was about the battles and the universe-at-stake kind of stuff.

Good to hear Brightest Day. Welcome to GL and DC fandom.
The GL mythos/continuity is one of the easiest to follow and get into. Only a few key stories from the past (before Johns) are somewhat important to understanding Johns current GL mythos and run (not so true for characters like Batman and Superman).
As for DC as a whole, I've always been a "DC first" kinda fan, preferring Batman, Superman and GL over most anything Marvel. IMHO DC has the better current continuity to follow. Marvel though has great noncurrent old classic stories that all comic fans should check out...especially with Spider-Man, FF, Captain America, and The Punisher (and X-men some, though I really only read Magneto-related X-men stories, since Magneto is such an interesting villain).

Yeah I'd say that the accessibility is one of the things that helped me get hooked on GL so easily, along with you know, great writing & characters and fantastic art. It's cool to have one or two stories to point at and tell people to check out if they want to get into the title(s). I still love my Marvel books, but in some cases they can be almost impenetrable for new readers without a guidebook.
