Captain Lou was a hype machine in the same way as Bobby Heenan was.
Those two could turn a run of the mill match into the main event just by building up hype and working the crowds.
Yet another of the legendary managers gone. :frown:

Is it a sign that I'm old as dirt that everyone who died this year it seems like I actually know who they were?
I mean, looking at a list of people who dies say 10 years ago, most of the names don't register..but now, and this year especially, it seems all the people I remember growing up with are falling like flies...

I remember him from that old WWF cartoon which was on TV in the '80s. That was actually my first exposure to any pro wrestling personalities. When I did begin watching wrestling regularly, Albano was pretty much retired. But I saw some video of him over the years, including a Cyndi Lauper video or two which he appeared in, of course.
Not somebody I knew a whole lot about, but his death's another reminder that time keeps passing and things keep changing and nothing is forever, which is never pleasant to think about.
Capt. Lou has done his last Mario? I am sad. :frown:

I really thought that Lou Albano had died years ago. As a matter of fact, I was thinking about Lou Albano and trying to remember when he died just a few days ago.

People say the same thing about Ernest Borgnine. Hell I thought that way about Don Knotts when he died, I didn't know the dude was still alive until that point.

Another of the good guys fall.
RIP, Lou.
:frown:
Met him decades ago, mainly remember him backstage making the other wrestlers laugh before they had to go wrestle.
Never sure if he did it to relax them or just to see if they could "not laugh" when they had to .

I was never a huge wrestling fan but I always remembered him from the Super Mario Brothers Super Show. That was an important show for me when I was a little kid (one of the reasons along with Captain N the Game Master that I pestered my parents to get an NES when I was three).

Same here. He was the best voice actor they ever got for Mario. It's sad to know that the guy's gone.

Ha. This is actually "old school" enough wrestling talk that I ACTUALLY CARE.
Not so much into anything Wrestling-wise in the past decade or so.
Gotta wonder what Cyndi Lauper thinks of all of this.

didn't I just see Cyndi Lauper on an episode of some drama series just a few weeks ago?

Yeah, I remember him most vividly from the Cyndi Lauper videos. He was great in the two-part video for the theme song from "Goonies" where Cyndi & family owned a gas station that was being repossessed by creditors played by Rowdy Roddy Piper and other evil wrestlers.

I'd hardly call it a drama anymore its gotten so silly, but she was recently on FOX's "Bones".

They've certainly stayed in touch.
Apparently she wrote the intro to his biography. Which I now have to see if its actually in print.

Some say the man's not wrapped too tight,
Captain Lou, Captain Lou, Captain Lou
But when he's on the scene, everything's alright,
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
With a man of a thousand faces,
I know we'll be goin' places (HEY!)
I'm gonna stick with "The Guiding Light,"
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
Lou don't worry 'cuz it's figured in,
Captain Lou, Captain Lou, Captain Lou
And he's got sharp teeth like Rin Tin Tin,
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
With a man of a thousand faces,
I know we'll be goin' places (HEY!)
We'll stick with the "Light" through thick and thin,
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
Captain Lou, Captain Lou, Captain Lou
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
With a man of a thousand faces,
I know we'll be goin' places (HEY!)
I'm gonna stick with "The Guiding Light,"
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
Captain Lou, Captain Lou Albano.
(REPEAT & FADE)
"They're talking about me!
Captain Lou Albano!
Maker of champions, baby!
Twelve tag-team champions!
I take them, I mold them,
I think it's charisma, it's pandemonium!
It's psychedelic pandemonium!
Ah ha ha ha ha ha! I, am "the Guiding Light," ha ha!
I'm where it's at! Ah YEAH! CLCLA,
80%, 60% of the net, 80% of the gross, 45% of the beef,
72% of the weight, 83% of the gross, 87% of the net,
60% of the what?, 40% of the gross, 32%, 22%,17%,19%,

The AP has a surprisingly bland bit from Lauper.

She's probably choked up to say much else, I know I would be if one of my friends died.

You gals should do a tribute on the Geektress page, complete with the "do the Mario" video.
