View Full Version : Who here doesn't watch live TV anymore...?

I'd say a fair number of my friends exclusively watch TiVo'd or DVRed programs. I don't get cable TV anymore and only watch what's on Hulu, Google Video, Youtube, etc.

Networks are still basing ratings (and thus success) off of live broadcast ratings.

Thing is, I have zero interest in EVER watching live broadcast programming again, even if it were free. I'm not into sports. I think 24 hour news networks, all of them, RUIN journalism and I'm not interested in news in that format. (I'm interested in documentary and investigative journalism and beyond that maybe an hour's worth of analysis of pressing news stories but I really DON'T EVER want to see panels of pundits, live tweets, boiling frogs, editorials about immigration, showpiece technology like "magic boards" -- any of that stuff. My hour a day of news watching will go towards Comedy Central and Conan's monologue is CNN/MSNBC/Fox are intent on producing their news as entertainment and I'll read anything substansive.)

But you would literally have to pay me money to watch broadcast TV again. If Hulu shut down tomorrow, I'd just give up on the networks and watch online content like The Guild and various Youtube performers' shows.

Until the networks start counting the DVRed shows I might catch at a friends house or my Hulu views, I'm off the grid. I might as well be a shaker. And I suspect I'm not alone on this.

As long as they consider traditional broadcast as their primary medium, I gotta say, I hope they all go under. Traditional broadcast is a crappy, bloated service that leads to people watching crap and proliferating crap. The affiliate system assumes that your community is a matter of geographic reality for you and I don't think that's the case for most people under 40 anymore. Where broadcast is concerned, I don't exist. And I suspect that number is growing.

What do you think?

Well Hulu is factored into ratings.

I don't have cable at this point, nor do I intend to get it. When I did have cable, I only watched TV on Sunday nights, and then only for the Simpsons/American Dad/Family Guy programing block, followed by Adult Swim.

Frankly I do not have the desire to arrange my life around a TV schedule. TV on DVD saw a drastic reduction in my TV watching, and Hulu took the rest out.

Hulu is factored in...?

I seem to recall that the show Kings did well on Hulu and VERY well on iTunes but that NBC dismissed online ratings as irrelevant to the success of a show like that. I also seem to recall Michael Green and folks behind the show saying that NBC was only interested in traditional viewers and considered online ad revenues to be a novelty and a form of side income.

There are three shows I watch, House, Lie to Me and Grey's Anatomy. Grey's is the only one I regularly watch 'live' because it's on late enough that I can watch without interruptions. The others I download off isohunt. I cue them up in the morning & when I get back, it's done. I watch them, then delete 'em, because I have no interest in collecting tv shows, and I don't want to clog up my hard drive.

I record more than half of what I watch. For the most part, the only thing I watch live all the time is college and pro football.

I don't watch that much telly.

But Sarah Jane Adventures starts again tomorow, so I will be!

I should hope the networks don't go under! I'd be out of an awesome job.

But I do wish they'd factor in DVRs. The ratings figures would actually improve significantly, I believe.

I watch live tv and I also record some series that I like to keep...

transferring stuff to disc at a later date saves me tons of money instead of buying box sets of stuffs...

I tend to follow shows that I really enjoy on DVD. Any shows that I like but don't love I'm fine with catching on TV.

I'm not sure how much it is factored in. Last I checked, the most watched science fiction show on Hulu was Firefly.

I'm finding that between my DvR and On Demand, I'm viewing almost no shows at the time they air. The only things I tend to watch live are football games, the MLB playoffs (Go Phils!), Sportscenter, and various news programs. On Thursday nights, for example, I tend to watch the college football game on ESPN, and DvR The Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec (because I love Aziz), and ...Always Sunny... to watch whenever I feel like it. Even last night, I DvR'd Sons of Anarchy so I could read for awhile.

It's been several months since I last watched live television. I also don't have DVR. I generally watch DVD boxed sets, internet streaming, or netflix DVDs/streaming.

I almost never watch live. My DVR starts recording when a show comes on, and I tend to start watching that episode about half way through.

Apart from footy and news programme's I don't watch much live telly at all any more, especially due to things like iPlayer and 4OnDemand.

Apart from sports, and some stuff occasionally, like Attack of the Show or Jon Stewart or The Colbert Report, I mostly watch things off my DVR.

I can FF through commercials which gives the show a much better flow, and a more pleasant experience.

There are some shows that I pretty much only watch through *cough*torrents*cough*, but those are rare.

Then some stuff I watch on DVD/BD when it comes out.

OTOH, I do have the tv on a LOT, just as background. Mostly L&O (various flavors) repeats, and the like. But if I'm not listening to music, the tv is on. I need some sort of background.

I have a combined cable receiver and DVR and I record a lot of shows and movies to watch later.

I also use BBC iPlayer, 4 On Demand and erm, (whispers... Hulu) quite a lot and I love not having to watch shows at set times any more.

iPlayer and 4OnDemand.

I'd assume the BBC and Channel 4 take them into account when calculating ratings. Be daft not to!

I DVR everything except the news and sports events. And even when I watch the news "live", I usually "DVR delay" it, i.e. I start watching the 6:00 news around 6:20 so I can rewind to the beginning and then FF through the ads and the stuff I don't care about.

It makes it very painful when I'm staying in a hotel or am at a friend's house who doesn't have DVR. Having to watch real live TV with ads and no pause or instant replay is very trying.

I wish that iPlayer, and BBC stuff were available here. I love their site, but it's all restricted to Britain. :(

(No, I do realize that I could proxy it into thinking I was connection from the UK, etc. But sheesh.)

About the only TV I watch anymore is wrestling and an occasional cartoon. I haven't even seen the news in forever.

I haven't watched tv in three years and I can say I don't miss it. I still youtube stuff from time to time, but for the most part, I either buy DVDs of stuff I think I'll like or read. I find I'm happier.

That's because if you live in the UK, you're paying to use the service via the license fee. (Well, collectively we are)

I Sky+ a lot of stuff now, but I've never been a big fan of watching stuff on the computer. I haven't that many shows I watch regularly these days anyway.

Oh, I understand that.

But I still wish I had immediate access to all that stuff. :)

Proxy use is pretty easy and I can watch Hulu with few problems. It would probably be the same for US users using BBC iPlayer.

I only have to click an icon at the bottom of the screen and I can watch Hulu in about 10 seconds.
