I had the pleasure of speaking to the creator at WizWorld Philly. It's a Small Press book, that has quality that equals any of the Big Boys.

This is such a wonderful book and Raven is simply awesome!

This book is very high quality both in content and in production - I would recommend it highly to anyone even remotely interested. http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/2thumbs.gif

Auctions for The Gift on eBay are extremely overpriced, its crazy how much people will pay for these issues. The story really doesn't do much for me. Seems like a Darkness wannabe. Not my thing, but I'm glad lots of other are enjoying it, keep it coming.

I've just seen that in the new Previews there's a listing for a Gift Set ($ 9,95), maybe that's the thre first issues (I hope).

look for issue 8 with the I in the corner, this couldn't have happened to a better book.

also keep an look out for the first trade collecting the early issue coming from Image around the same time.

if the story keeps building up like it did with the latest issue big things are in store.

Wow, the gift pack is great for anyone interested in this comic. Too bad I'm not. It's just a Darkness revamp. Some ex-mafia type guy gets extreme powers and he comes back to kill all his enemies.

No no no.
That was just the first issue.

Each issue is a self-contained story, with different characters receiving 'the gift' and using it for their own purposes.

I thought the next issue #8 will be published by Image for release in October. But the lastest Previews (August for October solicitations) doesn't list it.

Anyone knows what's up?

I asked this question in the Indies forum, but realized I should probably ask here since it'll be published by Image now.

Anyone know when the first issue (#8) will be released?
The Image site says it's suppose to be in October and listed in the August Previews, but I can't find it listed in the August Previews.

Anyone know?

I just read issue 7 which just came out, and it's not an Image book yet. But what I did find humorous was during the story, there's some graffiti on a store window that says "Image Rules", so obviously the deal was already set before this one was finished. :D

The first Image issue is suppose to be #8. I pre-order my comics (for a 35% discount!) 2 months in advance from the Previews catalog. Image press releases and other news stories about the move to Image say that the first Image issue (#8) is suppose to come out in October and is suppose to be listed in the August Previews catalog, but it's not listed in there.

I'm just wondering if it has been delayed.

intmd8r

Issue #8 will indeed be coming out through Image.

However, there was a mixup and Image didn't get the text and image file together, so it accidentally got left out of the current Previews solicitations. Instead, it will be in the next Previews that comes out in a few weeks along with the trade paperback for issues 1-5 (for shipping in November).

But Raven always tries to ship early, so there is a slight chance it may still come out in October. :)

I am very active on Image board.
I have been asked by raven to come over here. Attepting to clarify issue # 8.
There was a screw up in Previews. This is why issue # 8 did not appear to be ordered.
It can be ordered at end of September. Issue will than come out in November.
This is very special issue for me. I hope new people also try this issue. Raven is triing very hard to help out my niece Kathy. Orders are really hot for issue in my town. My Grandma even ordered issue. She is 94.
There will also be TPB. This will include issue 1-5. Special bonus features in there. Six readers were interviewed about comic. I was one of them. I think this is coming out in November or December. Will be in late September Previews.

Who here is picking up this series? How is it?

Onyxcross
11-15-2004, 12:22 PM
Well, I had been picking it up, but I think I stopped at issue #6.
It was Okay, and there does seem to be allot of people who enjoy it, but after a while, it just came across as the same thing to me in each story...The "Ancient One" bestows the "Gift" upon someone, and they do their thing with their new found power. (Get what they want, seek revenge etc.)

I've heard it's supposed to be building into a larger story as it goes along, but I didn't catch any clues to that end...maybe I didn't give it a long enough run to get me there, I don't know.

I have read nothing but pretty glowing reviews of each issue too, which is kind of what kept me picking it up for as long as I did, but I just didn't register the same response myself to the books as the reviewers obviously did...don't know what to tell you there.

Overall, the whole package is presented nicely enough (story/art) but I just found it to be too repetitious and predictable; guess as is with anything, it will all eventually boil down to personal tastes...it just turned out not to be my thing.

Marcus
11-17-2004, 07:14 PM
A friend of mine got me hooked on this and I think he described it best..."it's the Twilight Zone on CRACK"

The stories are all individual except for one difference, there is a man called the Ancient One who bestows a "gift" on each person he meets. Now it's up to the individual whether the power given them will help them or end up hurting them, depending on the morals of that person (Issue #6 was a good example of this...man he got screwed! LOL!)

But Issue 9 will be out soon and I hear it's got a lot of hot chicks and other things in it.

I would definitely check it out!

(Plus, there is a trade coming out covering Issue 1-5 if you don't want to pay the price of back issues).

The Gift is an amazing series. Raven Gregory has crafted a multi-faceted universe that begs to be explored, full of heartbreak and possibility, wonder and horror.

I picked up the Trade from Gregory himself at WizardWorld Texas.

I was really impressed that he was selling the individual issues (all first printings), but since I haven't read the book, I played it safe and just bought the trade from him.

I asked him about the "value pack" that had been solicited. . but he said that orders were so high, he's completely out of them.

Very nice guy ( I think that was his Dad w/ him too, and he was cool as well).

The series is great, and I'm picking up the individual issues now as well. . . 9 just came out last Wed. if I'm not mistaken.

I picked the trade up over the weekend... and personally I didn't like it.

I was digging the story up through the first two issues, but then all the issues were about rape, rape and more rape. People being raped, guys wanting to rape, families being killed and raped.

I know that we are trying to go for the whole fight the real problems in the world bit, but it just seemed to me like a lot of rape.

Anyway... just my opinion. I don't think I will be getting any more.

Dante

Onyxcross

I already said why I didn't care much for the series...but I don't recall there being that much "rape" in there; I'm pretty sure there was an actual rape in one of the issues, maybe #2 or #3 (I already handed my copies off to my brother to take a look at, so I'm trying to recall.) but other than that, I do recall that there was a pretty fair amount of sexual overtones in general, which was kind of a turn off to me anyway.

Even though I dropped the series (I have a friend who collects it though, and talks with me about it.), I am curious however, to see just how the identity of the ancient one will actually play out in the overall telling of the tale; knowing who he is, I would say that it leaves a tall order to fill in making it jive with those who understand the historical aspect of the character...that is, IF this character is indeed based on who/what I think it is.

I've been colectimg this book in single and there is ONE rape.ONE.Issue 2.Its true the subject matter can be dark at time but the whole mytery of the Ancient One is playing out great. Why is he "gifting" these people?

Agian It does have some dark elements but they are really well handled.Issue 5 is about child abuse.Pick it up

Allen Klingelhoets
12-01-2004, 12:32 PM
Can someone over here please pass along over there that the issues are not all about RAPE. None of the issues are about rape.

One girl get's raped in issue two. That's it.
Issue three. No rape. This book was about mental illness.
Issue four. No rape. Sure Jack Sinister is a sick **** but he never rapes anyone...he is just a serial killer who stalks his prey and kills them.
Issue five is about an abused kid for Christ sake.

Please let the guy know he's really missing a great story.

Well, it IS an adult themed book. So not a lot of KIDS are going to like it. But aside from the ONE issue they are not all about rape. If you like the sci-fi or horror comics of ye olden days, then you'll like this book.

He's a child because he didn't like THE GIFT?

I didn't like it either. It had been hyped quite a bit on Broken Frontier, so I checked out the first three issues, and I hated it. To me, it seemed too reminiscent of early Image work - more gloss than substance. I have no problems with adult-themed works - I'd say more than half of what I buy wouldn't be necessarily kid-friendly. However, most of those books are what one might call "mature," in terms of delivery, rather than content. There's really just nothing in THE GIFT for me.

But, for anyone interested, I think the first issue is available for free through the creator's website. Don't take any of our words for it - check it out yourself and make your own decisions.

I hate that kind of logic. There isn't a single piece of art or entertainment that is beyond criticism and/or against one's taste, because taste is a subjective thing.

Sorry if I misread your line saying "not a lot of KIDS are going to like it" in response to Dante's comments. Again, to each his own.

Hey Ed,

Tell him to try it out. Money back promise from me if he doesn't like it. That issue goes beyond comics. It has a good heart that transcends the artform.

It sounds conceited but it's not. It's just a really good heart felt story

Don't like it.Get your money backI Not sure if it applies to anyone but Ed.Visiting his board.he really loves issue 8

Again, thanks, but no thanks.

If I'm correct, this is the issue that Raven's donating the profits of to a charity that benefits Allen's niece, or the disease from which she suffers. That's commendable. However, the comic really and truly isn't to my taste. I've tried it - it's not for me.

Heart doesn't transcend an artform. If it did, CHICKEN SOUP FROM THE SOUL would be brilliant, and it isn't.

You know what though? **** it. I'll buy a copy, just for the charity aspect, because that's something I can get behind. So no money back if I hate it.

Marcus

If you're asking about the artwork--it's top-notch. Definitely ranks up high in quality.
As for the the storyline, the premise is interesting, but I'm getting tired of all the individual stories of the "gift" being introduced to different people. I'd like to see it move along and see what it's all about.

As for everything coming together and the story moving along...look no further than issue nine and ten. Nines' ending is a MUST read for where the series is going to go. ANd ten throws up the biggest clue so far.

The next arc (issues 11-14) will answer all of your questions about WHY the Ancient One is doing all this. "Trust me when I say, you aint seen nothing yet". :D

Sorry about the delay. The Trade will be coming out in November. I plan on fast lining the Trades from here on out.

The biggest reason for the delays is we won't solicit unless we know the book will be done. I know late sucks, but late when you said a book is going to be out is even worse in my eyes.

But take heart, as soon as the GIFT breaks the top 100, it'll be monthly each and every month. Swear ;)

I got the first trade yesterday at the Motor City Con and read it last night. It was pretty cool, but I have to ask: Is this going anywhere? Or is the entire series just this Ancient One dude giving people "The Gift?"

Arvandor
05-20-2006, 11:39 AM
Most of the series is indeed made up of individual stories, with different characters receiving the Gift.

But the last few issues do indicate an overall plan. Issue #13 revealed the identity of the Ancient One's enemy, and issue #14 told the Ancient One's origin story.

Issue 14 was the end of the current run. It's on hiatus now anyway.

DonC

Hiatus? Please tell me I didn't just pick up a book that isn't going to finish its main storyline.

JTLauder
05-22-2006, 10:38 AM
The series takes forever setting up the story. The first 8-10 issues or so is the Ancient One giving the Gift to different people and how they use it. Around the 8-10 issue or so (I forget) some of the background story of the Ancient One starts appearing. Supposedly, the series will tie in all those people eventually, but I've lost interest in the series already.

I met the author at a con and got the vol. 1 and then got the next few issues but they seem to take forever to come out or the CBS just don't push them.

It's seems cool enough but I wanted to know if anyone else read it, liked it.

Arvandor

Arvandor

Haven't read it, what's it about?

The series tells of a mysterious being known as "The Ancient One", who travels the world handing out powerful, supernaturally charged items to selected mortals. These "Gifts" grant the mortal incredible power, to use however they see fit. Some use it for good, others for their own selfish ends.

Each issue is a standalone story, focusing on a new recipient of "the Gift" and how they choose to use it.

I got the first trade from Raven Gregory at the Motor City Con and enjoyed it. Got the rest of the series at Wizard World Chicago, but I haven't read them yet.

Apparently there is/was an overall story about the Ancient One, but I don't think they got to telling it before the book went on hiatus. So, it's good, but you won't see any resolution to the overall storyline.

Raven Gregory told me at Image boards The Gift is definatly returning. Not until next year though. I had letter published in issue # 4. My niece Kathy was in letters page of issue # 8.
My picture was in letters section of issue # 9. I even participated in interview in first trade paperback of the Gift.
I have every regular issue published. I do not have Directors Cut though. I also have both trades. I have nothing but respect for Raven Gregories story The Gift. My family thinks the world of Raven.

We are hoping to have it back out again next year. The biggest hold up is finding an artist that can meet deadlines and keep up the quality of what you'd expect out of the book.

The answers to the bigger story surrounding the Ancient One were revealed in issue #14.

Thanks to all those who enjoyed the series. I appreciate the support and I'm glad you liked it.

If you get a chance, check out my newest project. I'm writing the prequel comic for the movie SE7EN from zenescope entertainment and New Line Cinema due out in stores on Sept 13. I'm doing the first issue, Gluttony. If you enjoyed the movie, you'll get a kick out of the series.

Hiatus? Please tell me I didn't just pick up a book that isn't going to finish its main storyline.

#14 answered the bigger question. When the series starts up again next year the series will focus on all the characters from the first 13 issues coming back and interacting with each other and what role they play in the Ancient One's master plan.

They were talking to some guy but I forgot what he said about it. He is on myspace, if you want to catch him and ask him questions.

but overall, i picked up the whole 14 issues at the Comic Con and felt the same way at first, where is this going. in issue 11-14 it get answered, ow i want more.

You mean your comic store isn't carrying the book anymore? They're up past issue 25.

Just kidding. Raven said in another thread that he sold the characters to a multi-media company called Spacedog. Since Spacedog doesn't actually publish comics (they purchase properties and try to market them into video games, movies and TV shows) I don't think they have any plans to continue with the series.
