Not that few actually. Unless you can qualify "defeat" more.

A lot of villains defeat him. BUT he always comes back. He's Superman.

Unless you want hardcore defeat, then Doomsday.

Yeah, kind of a lot of wriggle room with the way the question's phrased.

I can think of a couple clear defeats. Metallo soundly trashed him in their first fight in Superman #1, only to be kidnapped by Luthor before he could kill him. And Circe and the male Cheetah brought him down during Phil Jiminez's run on Wonder Woman.

Captain Marvel and Parallax have both also knocked him out with a punch to the back of the head, if those count.

Wonder Woman defeated an amped Superman in Jimenez's run #175 vol2. but she was holding back and he was turned intoa doomsday monster.
and Wonder Woman defeated him again in #210 v2
She had given him a run for the money in JLA (tenth circle) when he was possessed.

I gotta say. It wo0uldbe nice to see them fight when hes not cookoo or magickally possessed sometime lol or turned into a magickally amped doomsday like in 175 lol.

Iffy...she ended the fight by stopping the bad guy who was controlling Superman, so depends on how loosely the OP defines "defeat".

Oh, yeah, good one. Lobo beat the absolute crap out of him in their first fight, and that was before he got his hands on a chunk of kryptonite. Superman only got rid of him by projecting a hologram of his own dead body.

Doomsday pretty much won two of their four fights. The first (Death of Superman) ended with multual death and a humilated JLA.
The second (Hunter/Prey) Supes, Radiant (the first guy who beat Doomsday in the story of ever, died in the second fight) and Waverider were handly pwned and had to send him to the end of time. Doomsday also beat Darkseid before.
In the third one (Doomsday Wars), it was Brainiac in his body, and the entire All-Star Morrison League was mega-pwned. Even without Brainiac in his head, Doomsday pwned Orion and the Martian Manhunter in 52 seconds. Doomsday also pwned Supes a lot of times during the story.
In the fourth (Superman 175, the tenth year after Death of Superman), Doomsday defeated Black Lighting and the Martian Manhunter, almost killed Superman, who got back and won by simulating intangibility with super-speed, then breaking the will to fight of the recently-beaten Doomsday.

Metallo won the first fight he had with Superman post-crisis.

Lobo also won their first fight, but I have a impression Supes didn't fight back because he didn't want to, he was the "Krypton Man" at the time. The fight after Supes return from death showed that Supes had the advantage.

Firestorm almost killed Superman in "The icy heart of Killer Frost", I think it was Fury of Firestorm 05. He created a sphere of Kryptonite around him and a sphere of Steel for Zatanna, making them fall towards the ground. Man, if Firestorm goes crazy someday, Supes better watch out. He's the one guy that can take him.

Ruin handly trashed him, I think it was Adventures of Superman 636.

During King of the World, Supes was defeated by the JLA with artificial kryptonite and Orion's help tipping the balance. His robots saved him, though.

Parasite defeated Supes a lot of times. He took A LOT of power and trashed him shortly before the Destruction of Metropolis. He had a solar absortion problem going on at the time. Parasite absorved the excess power, turning into a humongous monster that trashed him and fleed. I'm surprised he stayed low and was defeated by Superboy. He should've been CRAZY STRONG, enough to snap Superboy like a twig, then eat Superman as a snack. He also almost killed him in the beginning of the Trial of Superman. He also made a scheme to weaken and destroy Superman", using new shape-shifting powers to take over Lois' place, then ruin Supes life and kill him. He almost did, ALMOST, but he sucumbed to the same kryptonite infection Supes had at the time and "died".

What did creating a sphere of Steel actually accomplish?

Wouldn't that be a less difficult fight than the 219 one? Superman would not be in earnest as he would not be trying to wipe out his opponent.

As far as villains go:

Circe (War of the Gods and the 2 parter after OWAW)
Darkseid in a time travel alternate reality(?) story in JLA (Rock of Ages?)
The dude-i-fied Cheetah in that 2 parter after OWAW

Perhaps we could add in the first confrontation with the Russian General Zod where Superman had his jaw broken. This made Superman scared of him pretty much up until the end after that.

Is it true that Valor is as strong as Sups?I guess i just personally like the idea that Sups is The strongest there is as far as physical Strength is concerned (for the most part) and the thought of Valor's race being just as strong irks me....(and don't get me started on New Krypton.... a whole other planet of beings just as strong as sups with just the lack of know how in the way.)

hate to break it to you, but there are other heroes as strong/stronger physically than superman, as well. captain marvel, black adam, and sodam yat, to name a few...

There is nothing to break sense i was generally speaking and my ? isn't about Captain, Adam or Ion but on Valor.Plus depending on the writer i wouldn't doubt sups been shown outclassing them and being outclassed but inconsistency's are a part of comics aren't they?!

Metallo beated the shit out of Superman in the very first issue right after ''the man of steel'' mini series and in the second issue, Lex, with the help of his newly found kryptonite ring, managed to give Supes a run of his money. Heck, he kicked him out from his office!!!A fake Booster Gold managed to defeat the man of steel in Action Comics # 594!

Practically every major Superman level hero and villain has beaten Superman since COIE.

For villains, add to the list Non, who seemed stronger than him, and a combination of Phantom Zoners. And Prime, who's owned him.

Honestly , Captain Marvel has never really beaten him (well , marvel beat E2 superman but not E1 superman) , well not until that ridiculous magical one punch by Morrison.
