Being new to reading Batman how exactly does Azrael tie into Batman?

for what it's worth, unable--heh: unwilling--to buy all the batbooks available, these are the ones I like:

Batman & Robin: I've been sort of woo'd by good wording, nice pictures, and some very weird 'villains'. That said, I'm not excited by Dick & Damien.

Gotham City Sirens: excellent mix of characters well written by the guy who first threw them together, nice pictures.

Detective Comics: don't care about the characters yet, but the writing's good and the artwork's good and I think this has a lot of possibilities.

I'm waiting for Bruce Wayne's return. And for the return of the 'animated-style' Batman comics.

IMO Batman and Robin by Grant Morrisson is one of the best-written books out there.

Being new to reading Batman how exactly does Azrael tie into Batman?

Azrael was an armored assassin that was used by a group called the "Sacred of Order of Saint Dumas". He met Batman and he tried to help Azrael get over his brainwashing. Eventually Azrael (his real name being Jean Paul Valley) was allowed to take over as Batman after Bane broke his back in Knightfall. With Bruce gone the brainwashing kicked in, causing Azrael to start acting super aggressive, until he ended up actually killing one villain. Bruce eventually came back and defeated him, taking back the mantle of Batman. Azrael then went on to try atone for his sins by being a hero, until he died fighting his arch nemesis Biis.

The current Azrael, Michael Lane, was originally the third of the Three Batmen that showed up during Morrisons run on Batman. The Order of Dumas had a new Azrael who went nuts and killed a cop. A rival order, called the Order of Purity took it upon themselves to find a new Azrael to take the old ones place. They found Lane, and gave him the Suit of Sorrow, (The armor given to Batman during the Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul) and declared him the new Azrael. In the final issue of the BftC tie-in mini, it is also revealed that Ra's Al Ghul himself is the leader of the Order of Purity.
