Respect.

I have to honor a guy with that kind of courage, kindness, and heart.

R.I.P. Mr. Magallanes

Jus t think he didn't make the decision to save someone once in the heat of the moment , he made that decision 30 or so separate times, lhe continued to make that decision even after he would logically have been completely exhausted.

The first decision would make him a hero by any reasonable measure, making the decision over and over even when each time he had to know his own survival was becoming less likely makes him much more than what we normally call a hero.

I would like to believe I could do it once, my self-respect forces me to believe I could do it enough to save my family, but to keep doing it shows a level of bravery I know I could never match or pretend to ever aspire to. He was a better man than I am by far,

Keenly observed and beautifully stated. The whole post, I mean. Thanks for writing it.

Truly disasters show how high man's spirit can climb.

Note that the CAFGU are not paid -- they're like a citizen's militia.

... just realised this. Muelmar's Kabiteno -- what is up with those people? They produce a disproportionate amount of Pinoy heroes.

I've also asked on my FB page on whether or not Mr Magallanes' family needs assistance and how to help him.

Meanwhile, if you've got a spare buck or two, the Red Cross could use your help : http://www.redcross.org.ph/. I think they do paypal.

World support has been awesome already. US Navy troops in Mindanao spent shore leave heading up to Manila to help rescue attempts. It can't be said enough: thanks guys. Vietnam's also been amazing -- Ondoy is heading their way and they STILL sent about about a tonne of rice our way. Iran has sent help, China has too.

Basically, a whole bunch of countries and people just all agreed that this was the right thing to do and just did it.

Sometimes it's just great to be human.
