View Full Version : SNL was AWFUL last night
I DVRd it because it was featuring U2 as musical guest (hosted by Megan Fox).
what the hell? she didnt' even mention "Jennifer's Body" and they didn't do a skit on it? The film is currently playing. Shame on her for not promoting her current film!
regardless of how the film is doing, it's CURRENTLY playing.
sheesh.
and what was up w/ U2? That first song definitely looked like they were playing to canned music. . .AND it was boring? U2 boring live? *never* seen that before.
the 2nd song was better, but the performance of "ultravoilet" at the end was the best -- so of course, that got cut short.
3 songs by U2, 2 Digital shorts, and some horribly boring sketches. What the heck was up with that? they had the whole off season to write, and came back with THIS?
crap, when the best/funniest thing in the show (skit wise) is one of the new girls dropping the F-bomb by mistake (and the face she made when she realized she said it), you know it was a crap show.
I pretty much DVR SNL for "Weekend Update" and the Musical guest. .and I'll do so again next week to see Lady GaGa. . but I doubt I'll even try to watch anything else than these segments.

Crap. I was fully expecting Megan to be terrible, which she was, but the whole cast seemed really off their game. I feel bad for the new girl who dropped the f-bomb, as that's gonna be problematic.
As for not mentioning Jen's Body, I very rarely hear hosts mention recent flops and bombs, unless they use it for some really self-depricating humor. I think Adam Sandler made a few jokes about the frosty reception for Billy Madison for example.

I never saw last nights episode...damn. But the last 2 seasons since Seth replaced Tina Fey the show has had an edge returned to it with him as writer. He's pretty much said the show won't have as much recurring characters now .
Also take in mind , SNL the last 2 weeks has 2 Saturday shows and 2 primetime deals to handle. That has to wear the writers and cast down. Reading on what goes into making an episode on Saturday happen (SNL 25TH Anniversy book)....shit man...I can see that the cast and crew are pretty much wore out now. Juggling all that is not easy.
Last year was a return to form and even the sketches not dealing with the election was awesome. From the Vincent Price Halloween special (Jon Hamm going... "Where are all the whores Vincent ?" made me fall outta my seat laughing) to the one where Forte and Hader I believe played horrible cops telling a guy to jump off the ledge. I believe one line was ... "Were on the clock here buddy...can ya go ahead and jump off the ledge already ?"

Yeah, sans Fey, Poehler, Dratch, etc. the show is meh and moving ever southward.
Michaela Watkins was let go so my interest in this season is about zero really.
These things tend to happen though, they'll have a particularly strong season and then things dip a bit.
Sadly, 2009 will be a 'dip' season.
What's telling is that the buzz for the show has all been about the F bomb being 'accidentally' dropped. I wonder if that's something that actually happened or if it was intentional.....(what better way to generate interest than some created contorversey?)
The season premiere was pretty awful, no doubt about it.
Oddly, enough both weeks of the Thursday night version of the show have been totally hilarious.
I guess what they have always said is true.
The 90 minute long SNL is the funniest half hour on television.

Back in the 1980/81 season Charlie Rocket I believe dropped the F-Bomb. Dick Ebersol was over the network part as Jean Dourman (I believe thats her name) had replaced Lorne Michaels as producer on the show. The ratings were already terrible and the moment Rocket did that...Ebersol fired her and sacked everyone nearly . Yep...Rocket was fired for that.

Oh, I totally believe it was accidental.
Terrible "biker talk" skit (riffing on "Sons of Anarchy" perhaps?), that had every other word as "frickin"
I got the impression this was a character she had done before, but maybe as an improv skit -- rather than on live TV, so she never had to censor herself before.
when she said "I fuckin love you for that" instead of "frickin". . her facial reaction (immediate) was that she said the wrong word.

That Jon Hamm Halloween episode was one of the funniest shows they've ever done.
Last night's show was kind of weak... and I was especially surprised that weakness was not due to Megan Fox, who did just fine.
I stopped caring about U2 about 15 years ago, and last night's performance didn't change my mind. The second song was much better than the first.
I felt bad for F-Bomb Girl... I don't know if she'll get fired over it or not, but they were asking for trouble by writing that as a first sketch for someone who's used to uncensored live performance but not used to censored live television.

Is it still a rule that you can't use the F word on a lot of American TV channels even on a late night show?
That seems terribly out of date as swearing is permitted after 9pm on any channel in the UK.

That was Nora Dunn. Who thought it would help her film career in a way. Dice was such a nice man ...that every female cast member (Victoria Jackson , Jan Hooks) that met him said he was like a teddy bear backstage during the week. That even though he did lewd comedy , he was a nice person to be around and even Clay admits the Diceman is an act , not him for real.
Lorne did try and play peace maker and offered Dunn the chance to not do any scenes with the Diceman that week and she still walked off. This pissed a lot of the female cast already angry with her for being a prima donna ...and the walkoff backfired big time. Dunn was let go. Her hollywood career never took off as she imagined it either.

It's classic backlash stuff. JENNIFER'S BODY not doing well means that those who have issues with Diablo Cody and/or Megan Fox now can say, "Finally, that stupid ***** will never work again!" (even though that's not how the film business works at all.)

Had to have been during the Sandler/Spade/Farley/Shannon years before they got movie careers and started trying to save their "best" ideas for the big screen.

There are many people who like her, so she is popular. There are other people who don't like her, so they dislike her more for being everywhere in the media, people who were indifferent to her also think she's overexposed with two major film releases, so when the second film has a weak opening, out come the knives.
It happens all the time. The big problem with the entertainment industry is, you have to be self-promoting and work a lot or people forget you, but if you work TOO much people get sick of you and root for you to fail.

I think SNL has, for the past 2 or 3 seasons, been funnier than it's been in 20 years. Not every show is brilliant, but there's never been a time when that was the case. I've been watching the DVD's of the old 1970's original-cast show, and boy were there a lot of un-funny sketches even back in those "classic" days.

Outside of her making some remark that she was a "tranny" which could be seen as hate speech toward LGBTQs, I don't think she warrants the nerd-rage.
Maybe she's like any "pretty "actress who does a nerd-movie: "Whore!"

I'm pretty sure the one who got the most blame for the sketch was Seth. He's the head writer and approves what we see basically. The show is trying to flirt the edge. The whole aim higher mantra is ridiculas for comedy. Its the same nonsense that made people for years hate MadTV.
It was just MadTV had looser rules and Fox allowed more outlandish things. Yet there was always this "MadTV is dumb....MadTV isn't as smart as SNL."
Well MadTV was kicking SNL's ass for awhile. It may not have showed in the ratings . But the show was more funny with Sasso/Spears etc etc. Plus it was MadTV that pushed Lorne to go out and get young comics after 1994/95 disastor.
I like SNL at times. But from 2002-2007 there was few bright spots. Weekend Update was funny sure. But the funniest stuff as the show crossing the line and not caring and that to me was the show where Mathew McConahey hosted . And thats the only rare spot of a time. Beyond when Spears and X-Tina showed up and showed off their breasts.
After the cold open had him late as Lorne asks Tina "Where is he ? He's late...he's supposed to be on now."
So they look all around and walk into a room where Mathew is smoking pot ...room full of smoke. He apologizes for being late and high and all the buddies leave 1st. Tommy Chong passes Lorne and says... "Cool threads man. Lookin good."
More people leave this smoked filled room as Sanz and Fallon are the last. Lorne shoots them dissapointing dad looks , as Fallon goes..."Uhhh were gonna....uhh go back to our dressin room..." They start to walk the wrong way as Lorne corrects them..."Your dressing rooms are that way."
That always brought a chuckle to me. Its not on the SNL site. I guess we know why (hints of drug using) . The other scene was Mathew organizing an anti-Iraq rally and had the following dope heads screaming.... "Save the whales...." "Say no to Abortion..." as Mathew kept tryin to correct them . Finally one guy yells... "Say no to whales having abortions..." I believe.
Either way... I think the SNL high spots are...
1975-1980 cast.
1986-1992 cast . (By 1993 Carvey and others slowly left.. Sandler and Farley were fired. Lorne managed to keep Tim Meadows from being fired)
1996-2001 cast . (This includes Ferrell , Hammond , Norm McDonald , Molly Shannon , Katten etc etc)
2008-current . (Seth Myers becomes head writer. Cast is trimmed to 10 people . Back againt the wall mentality as Myers tells last year no one is giving them much of a chance. Sketches will be shorter , there will be more less recurring characters , and also more edgey sketches will be pushed out.)
I like the idea. Slate likely got a reprimand from Lorne. Seth likely took the biggest part of the blame. But comedy is comedy. Fuck the rules.

If that sounds like I hate Tina Fey as head writer....well I think she did some good. I admit that. But a lot of the good seemed to be bits on Weekend Update. The sketches....well not so much. Maybe she at the end was more worried about 30 Rock than the show.
I also admit Tina is a beautiful woman and has a gift for situation comedy . Its just that for SNL , I don't think it worked as well. I was kinda happy to see Seth get the ball and chance to run with it last year. Hope he carries the momentum from last year forward.

I roughly agree with that ranking... though I have to admit the 1975-80 stuff looks less good when watching all of it, instead of just the highlight reels we've gotten on Comedy Central and elsewhere for the last 20 years. When the original cast was good they were brilliant... but lord, did they have their share of clunkers. And if Seth Meyers flubbed his Update lines today as often as Chevy and Jane did back then, he wouldn't be doing it for very long.
I like the idea. Slate likely got a reprimand from Lorne. Seth likely took the biggest part of the blame. But comedy is comedy. Fuck the rules.
Be my guest (and tell that to the FCC)... but comedy should also be funny. Five straight minutes off "huh huh huh... she's saying frickin' but she really means fuckin'.... huh huh huh" is not funny. Edgy+Funny is more along the lines of the"Dick in a Box" video or the Vincent Price Halloween sketch last year, or the "Musical Memories" sketches.
I remember the infamous "penis sketch" Conan O'Brien wrote for a Matthew Broderick-hosted episode in the 80's. A textbook example of being crude but funny.

Oddly, enough both weeks of the Thursday night version of the show have been totally hilarious.
I think the Thursday night SNL plays to the strengths of the show--or at least my personal preferences. As a rule, the political and news material outshines the rest by far. I don't understand the format where we often get one great political sketch, followed by one-joke skits that go on ad infinitum.
I guess what they have always said is true.
The 90 minute long SNL is the funniest half hour on television.
At the peak of my SNL viewing (the Farley, Sandler years) I usually turned the tv off about forty-five minutes in. And the last twenty were painfully awkward, but what else was on? I'm not sure there's much sense in putting the effort into the hour and a half. Would anyone really object if the show was thirty minutes or an hour? Get in, do it right, and get out while the getting's good.
On the frikkin' controversy, I'll say this. It doesn't sound like a great sketch. But I do have a soft spot for the John Goodman/ Joe Pesci bit where they substituted 'shampoo' for every curse word. Of course, you need Pesci and Goodman to carry that bit.

Oh I just remembered this. Last year for a Rod Bladgovich sketch , the character by Sudakis dropped the F-Bomb in every sentence. It shocked me...but nearly every sentence was the F word.
This must have had NBC really jump in and the clips of it as the opening have never really been posted on the site. But make no mistake...Jenny Slate only dropped the F-Bomb once on accident. Jason Sudakis pretty much destroyed it.
And the very next week in a "wink, wink" moment to NBC , Sudakis made fun of that and the writers had him substitute the F word with Sex. Which was even more insane to hear. Heres the sketch.
"Sex You , Harry Reid !"
