and was bored, and sad at the same time.
I haven't been this disappointed in what a film COULD have been since "Event Horizon"
Decent idea (and I *love* the fact the "creatures" are explained in one throwaway piece of dialogue -- seriously, we shouldn't need to know the hows or whys, only that they are a threat (tho it would have been nice to explain where they got those neat glowing-blue tipped spears).
unfortunately, the story makes absolutely no sense, and when you try to use logic to make the story make sense, it collapses on itself.
I blame the "big twist" they (writers/producers) felt the need to cram in here.
why? Seriously. . why is this "twist" shoe-horned in?
1) the discovery of said twist by another character makes no sense -- within the logic of the film, what this character finds, in no way let's him know the secret he figures out.
if the crew's family wasn't with the rest of the passengers, ok, finding Quaid's wife's sleeper unit with the general passengers tells you . . . what? That Quaid isn't who he says he is? That logic doesn't hold. He has a command uniform with his name stitched on the chest. He has a sleeper unit with his name stenciled on it IN THE COMMAND MODULE.
So, let's assume that Quaid killed the real commander, and replaced him.
Nevermind the WHY. . which is a big deal anyways. . but OK, he killed the real commander and replaced him.
so the *real* commander's wife's sleeper unit was with the general passengers. But they made a point of saying the crew's family *wasn't* with the rest of the passengers in that cargo hold.
yeah. . HUGE plot hole.
2) the twist completely falls apart as soon as you try to do the math!
not only what I noted above, but WHY would he chose to imitatae another crew member, if he was just going to try to kill them all anyways?
why not just kill everyone before they woke up?
heck. . why go back into the hyper-sleep?
this stupid twist, killed what could have been a very enjoyable film: Avoid the creatures who want to kill us, while we are trapped on a ship that's about to explode.
oh sure, it was VERY "Escape from New York", and extremely frustrating that the characters our lead keep bumping into (out of 16,000 people on the ship!) all seem to be the ones who know how to get to the reactor room (how convenient!).
could have been cheezy fun.
but in an effort to tie in Quaid's character, by giving that character this twist, it makes the whole film collapse under the weight of stupidity.
feh.
C- at best.
and that's only for some nice cinematography work.
Not recommended. . wait for DVD or Cable.
